Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Processes of Dye Chemistry In preparing an English edition of Prof. Fierz-David's well-known work on the practical side of dye chemistry, advantage has been taken of the opportunity to correct one or two slight errors that had crept into the original Swiss edition, and to make an alteration to Plate XV. For the rest, the book remains practically unaltered. In most cases the original weights and prices have been retained (in francs per kilo.), instead of trying to convert them into shillings per pound. It was felt that, as the figures referred usually to prewar conditions in Switzerland, and having regard to the present unsettled state of the exchanges and of production costs, no good purpose would be served by attempting to give the English equivalents which, in any case, would in all probability only be misleading. I wish to acknowledge, with much gratitude, the assistance rendered by my wife during the translation; and to Mr. C. Hollins my best thanks are due for his kindness in giving much valuable help in revising the manuscript and the proofs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Dye Chemistry: The Chemistry of Dye-Stuffs Professor von Gborqibvics' Tsehrbuch der Farbenchemie is so well known to chemists that no further introduction is needed, and the fact that it had reached its fourth edition in 1013, under the capable editorship of Professor Grandmougin, is sufficient evidence of its popularity abroad. Although the German edition is available to English-speaking readers, the renewed interest which the war has compelled all to take in the future development of the synthetic dye industry has made it desirable that an up-to-date English translation should be prepared for those whose lack of familiarity with German may render the reading of the original a somewhat tedious business and, moreover, in carrying out the translation of the work advantage has been taken of the opportunity to bring the subject-matter up to date and to make various alterations to the original text and arrangements where it scorned desirable. Fortunately, from the reviser's point of view, the last six years have witnessed few, if any, developments of outstanding importance in the scientific and technical branches of the dye industry, though vast changes have occurred in the commercial and economic sides, which cannot, however, be discussed here. The chief additions and alterations to be noted in the present edition are: - the Tables indicating the relationships of the various derivatives of Benzene, Toluene, Naphthalene and Anthracene, the chapters on Quinoline Dyes and Coal-tar, which have been rewritten, a new section dealing with the Anthocyans, the chapter on Anthraquinone dyes and Vat colours, an account of recent work on Carminic acid and Curcumin, and, lastly, a list of all the more important books connected with the chemistry of dyes. The translation is entirely new and, wherever it has seemed desirable, references to work published during the period 1013-20 have been inserted, whilst in most cases the British Patents are referred to, as well as the German. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Intermediate Products for Dyes Nothing is more important in the present revival of the aniline dye industry in England and America than a knowledge of the literature dealing with the manufacture of intermediate products. The scope of most of the books on the subject to which one naturally turns is necessarily limited, and the authors must perforce content themselves with describing the chemistry of the processes concerned. It is, however, of prime importance to the would-be manufacturer to have, in a convenient form, detailed information as to the preparation of the materials he proposes to make, so that he may be sure that he will not spend time and money in rediscovering, perhaps, some process that may have been already elaborately described in an obscure book or periodical. The chemist, confronted with the task of compiling such information, immediately encounters difficulties. It is rarely that he has ready access to a good technical library, and even if that difficulty is overcome, and much time and labour are spent in the search, he will be chary of asserting that he has exhausted the whole of the literature on the subject of his investigation. It appeared to the author that a concise account of the literature dealing with the manufacture of intermediate products for dyes might therefore be of considerable use, and in this book he has endeavoured to present such an account in detail so as to render it unnecessary to refer to the original descriptions. It may perhaps be stated that he doubts whether any single library in England contains the whole of the literature consulted. As a guide to the selection of these materials the author has made considerable use of the "Dyestuff Census of the United States" (published in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, 1916, 35, 1202), as well as of other information as to the dyes in general use, and believes that he has included all the more important intermediate products. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Dyeing BY the term Dyeing we mean the colouring of various materials, especially textile fabrics, in such a manner that the colour is not readily removed by washing or rubbing the article; moreover, the colour must be distributed right through the whole material, and not lie simply on the surface as with a painted article. The art of dyeing dates from prehistoric times and is of Eastern origin. Pliny gives a Short account of the methods employed in Egypt in the first century, but in even earlier times dyeing operations were carried on in India, China, and Persia. From Egypt knowledge of the art travelled in a westward direction, but it was not until towards the end of the fifteenth century that the Dyers' Company was incorporated in London. Previous to the middle of the last century, all the materials used as colouring agents were of natural origin, being chiefly obtained from various portions of trees and plants. Probably in the early stages of the development of dyeing, the colours produced were of a fugitive character and little better than stains.
