Book excerpt: Educational Change and the Secondary School Music Curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand provides a fascinating case study in educational change. The music curriculum has been greatly affected by deep cultural and economic forces such as the growth of popular music's importance in young people's lives, by demands for inclusive and multicultural education, and not least by advances in technology that promise to invigorate all aspects of teaching and learning. This book brings together the work of a number of leading music education scholars and teachers from Aotearoa/New Zealand to both explore these issues and to share case studies of practice: both the positive changes and the unintended consequences. Each chapter focuses on a current issue in music education and the final chapter contains responses from a number of practitioners to the issues raised by the authors, drawing together the practical and theoretical dimensions of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is part of a national campaign for music education that aims to focus the nation's attention on the pressing need to include music and the other arts at the center of the school curriculum. The credo of this campaign is, "Just as there can be no music without learning, no education is complete without music." The meaning of this credo is spelled out in this report through a four-part argument. In chapter 1, "Our Culture Is Dying," the contention is made that through inattention to music and the other arts in schools, the nation is dehumanizing its own people--and particularly the children--not by design but by default. It is argued that music has intrinsic value for the learner, and that a knowledge of music is essential to an educated human being. In chapter 2,"Education Without Music," evidence is explored that music education is being pushed to the periphery in schools. Chapter 3, "Education With Music," underscores two areas of interest: first, the new, pathbreaking areas of research on the nature of intelligence and brain function that are linked to music; and second, the significant contributions that music education can make to all of education beyond its intrinsic value. Finally, in chapter 4, "Making It Happen: Mounting a National Effort," there is discussion of ways of putting the credo to work, including linking the benefits of music education to a national advocacy effort to bring music and the other arts to their basic role in U.S. education. Two appendices are included: list of witnesses before the National Commission on Music Education, and a list of endorsing and supporting organizations. (DB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important work that addresses the complex issues surrounding musical meaning and experience, and the Western traditional justification for including music in education. The chapters in this volume examine the important subjects of tradition, innovation, social change, the music curriculum, music in the twentieth century, social strata, culture and music education, psychology, science and music education, including musical values and education. Additional topics include the origins of mania, aesthetics and musical meaning related to concepts that are well-known to the ancient Greeks and Romans, which are compared to contemporary life. The rise of studies of musical behavior by social psychologists has been an important feature for the last two decades, and the relevance of this development to music education is explored. Articulating the difference between education and entertainment has been central to discussions and debates about the role of music in education since Plato and Aristotle first examined the problem. Many of the questions and issues raised by these two Greek philosophers in ancient Greece about the nature of music and its role in education are highly relevant today, and these are examined in the context of the twenty-first century. The writer stresses that music is a product of specific cultural ways of thinking and doing, and its inclusion in education can only be justified in terms of the importance a particular culture places on its music as a valued art form. The implications for music education are that those teaching music should focus in the ways musicians employ special cultural ways of thinking in their compositions and performance practices, whatever the genre. (Contains 28 illustrations and 2 tables.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge and Music Education: A Social Realist Account explores current challenges for music education in relation to wider philosophical and political debates, and seeks to find a way forward for the field by rethinking the nature and value of epistemic knowledge in the wake of postmodern critiques. Focusing on secondary school music, and considering changes in approaches to teaching over time, this book seeks to understand the forces at play that enhance or undermine music’s contribution to a socially just curriculum for all. The author argues that the unique nature of disciplinary-derived knowledge provides students with essential cognitive development, and must be integrated with the turn to more inclusive, student-centred, and culturally responsive teaching. Connecting theoretical issues with concrete curriculum design, the book considers how we can give music students the benefits of specialised subject knowledge without returning to a traditional past.
