Download or read book The Gettysburg Campaign written by Edwin B. Coddington and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-03 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Gettysburg remains one of the most controversial military actions in America's history, and one of the most studied. Professor Coddington's is an analysis not only of the battle proper, but of the actions of both Union and Confederate armies for the six months prior to the battle and the factors affecting General Meade’s decision not to pursue the retreating Confederate forces. This book contends that Gettysburg was a crucial Union victory, primarily because of the effective leadership of Union forces—not, as has often been said, only because the North was the beneficiary of Lee's mistakes. Scrupulously documented and rich in fascinating detail, The Gettysburg Campaign stands as one of the landmark works in the history of the Civil War.

Book Synopsis The Bitter Taste of Victory by : Lara Feigel
Download or read book The Bitter Taste of Victory written by Lara Feigel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Germany surrendered in May 1945 it was a nation reduced to rubble. Immediately, America, Britain, Soviet Russia, and France set about rebuilding in their zones of occupation. Most urgent were physical needs--food, water, and sanitation--but from the start the Allies were also anxious to indoctrinate the German people in the ideas of peace and civilization. Denazification and reeducation would be key to future peace, and the arts were crucial guides to alternative, less militaristic ways of life. In an extraordinary extension of diplomacy, over the next four years, many writers, artists, actors, and filmmakers were dispatched by Britain and America to help rebuild the country their governments had spent years bombing. Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn, Marlene Dietrich, George Orwell, Lee Miller, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Billy Wilder, and others undertook the challenge of reconfiguring German society. In the end, many of them became disillusioned by the contrast between the destruction they were witnessing and the cool politics of reconstruction. While they may have had less effect on Germany than Germany had on them, the experiences of these celebrated figures, never before told, offer an entirely fresh view of post-war Europe. The Bitter Taste of Victory is a brilliant and important addition to the literature of World War II.
Book Synopsis The All Americans by : Lars Anderson
Download or read book The All Americans written by Lars Anderson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 29, 1941, Army played Navy in front of 100,000 fans. Eight days later, the Japanese attacked and the young men who battled each other in that historic game were forced to fight a very different enemy. Author Lars Anderson follows four players-two from Annapolis and two from West Point-in this epic true story, The All Americans. Bill Busik. Growing up in Pasadena, California, Busik was best friends with a young black man named Jackie, who in 1947 would make Major League Baseball history. Busik would have a spectacular sports career himself at the Naval Academy, earning All-American honors as a tailback in 1941. He was serving aboard the U.S.S. Shaw when it was attacked by Japanese dive-bombers in 1943. Hal Kauffman. Together, Busik and Kauffman rode a train across the nation to Annapolis to enroll in the Naval Academy. A backup tailback at Navy, Kauffman would go on to serve aboard the U.S.S. Meredith, which was sunk in 1942. For five days Kauffman struggled to stay alive on a raft, fighting off hallucinations, dehydration, and—most terrifying of all—sharks. Dozens of his crewmates lost their minds; others were eaten by sharks. All the while Kauffman wondered if he'd ever see his friend and teammate again. Henry Romanek. Because he had relatives in Poland, Romanek heard firsthand accounts in 1939 of German aggression. Wanting to become an officer, Romanek attended West Point and played tackle for the Cadets. He spent months preparing for the D-day invasion and on June 6, 1944—the day he would have graduated from West Point had his course load not been cut from four years to three—Romanek rode in a landing craft to storm Omaha Beach. In the first wave to hit the beach he would also become one of the first to take a bullet. Robin Olds. The son of a famous World War I fighter pilot, Olds decided to follow in his father's footsteps. At West Point he became best friends with Romanek and the two played side-by-side on Army's line. In 1942, a sportswriter Grantland Rice named Olds to his All-American team. Two years later Olds spent D-day flying a P-38 over Omaha Beach, anxiously scanning the battlefield for Romanek, hoping his friend would survive the slaughter. The tale of these four men is woven into a dramatic narrative of football and war that's unlike any other. Through extensive research and interviews with dozens of World War II veterans, Anderson has written one of the most compelling and original true stories in all of World War II literature. From fierce fighting, heroic rescues, tragic death, and awe-inspiring victory, all four men's suspenseful journeys are told in graphic detail. Along the way, Anderson brings World War II to life in a way that has never been done before. Includes sixteen pages of black-and-white photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung, Volume IV focuses on the views of Mao Tse-Tung on communism, revolution, civil war, and patriotism. The volume first ponders on China's policy following victory in the war of resistance against Japan and the response of Mao Tse-Tung on Chiang Kai-shek's meddling with the surrender of Japanese forces and his plans for a counter-revolutionary civil war. The publication also takes a look at the role of rent reduction and production on the defense of liberated areas and the policy for work in the liberated areas. The book examines Mao Tse-Tung's call for his comrades to rise in arms against the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek, particularly taking note of the support that Chiang Kai-shek is getting from the United States. The text also elaborates on the concept of operations for the Liaohsi-Shenyang and Huai-hai campaigns; strengthening the party committee system; and the demand to include punishment for Japanese and Kuomintang war criminals. The volume is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the views of Mao Tse-Tung on communism, revolution, civil war, and patriotism.

Download or read book General MacArthur Wisdom and Visions written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MacArthur's supremacy as a true conversationalist is readily documented. This work on the wisdom and sayings of MacArthur is presented as a new-classicist document in that almost every item listed came from the mouth of General MacArthur and from his writings. He wrote almost all of his own speeches with eloquence in all of them. These speeches stand out as note-worthy because they were made immediately after periods of great historical significance. In these speeches he seemed to be speaking strictly from his heart. Regardless of the individual's attitude toward politics, religion, military or civilian service, his words sound spiritual and practical.

Download or read book The Woman's Hour written by Elaine Weiss and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both a page-turning drama and an inspiration for every reader"--Hillary Rodham Clinton Soon to Be a Major Television Event The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. "With a skill reminiscent of Robert Caro, [Weiss] turns the potentially dry stuff of legislative give-and-take into a drama of courage and cowardice."--The Wall Street Journal "Weiss is a clear and genial guide with an ear for telling language ... She also shows a superb sense of detail, and it's the deliciousness of her details that suggests certain individuals warrant entire novels of their own... Weiss's thoroughness is one of the book's great strengths. So vividly had she depicted events that by the climactic vote (spoiler alert: The amendment was ratified!), I got goose bumps."--Curtis Sittenfeld, The New York Times Book Review Nashville, August 1920. Thirty-five states have ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, twelve have rejected or refused to vote, and one last state is needed. It all comes down to Tennessee, the moment of truth for the suffragists, after a seven-decade crusade. The opposing forces include politicians with careers at stake, liquor companies, railroad magnates, and a lot of racists who don't want black women voting. And then there are the "Antis"--women who oppose their own enfranchisement, fearing suffrage will bring about the moral collapse of the nation. They all converge in a boiling hot summer for a vicious face-off replete with dirty tricks, betrayals and bribes, bigotry, Jack Daniel's, and the Bible. Following a handful of remarkable women who led their respective forces into battle, along with appearances by Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Frederick Douglass, and Eleanor Roosevelt, The Woman's Hour is an inspiring story of activists winning their own freedom in one of the last campaigns forged in the shadow of the Civil War, and the beginning of the great twentieth-century battles for civil rights.
Book Synopsis Creating International Studies by : Lucian M. Ashworth
Download or read book Creating International Studies written by Lucian M. Ashworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a critical evaluation of the works of Norman Angell and David Mitrany, this book explores the liberal roots of the academic discipline of International Relations (IR). Ashworth argues that, far from being the product of timeless realist truths, IR’s origins are rooted in liberal attempts to reform international affairs. Norman Angell’s work represents the first attempt to develop a comprehensive 'new liberal' approach to the problem of global governance, while David Mitrany’s exploration of the problems of international life led him to apply the left-liberal idea of functional government to global governance. Both writers demonstrated the extent to which early twentieth century liberal writers on international affairs had answered the critics of earlier nineteenth century liberal internationalists. The penultimate chapter argues that the realist-idealist 'Great Debate' never happened, and that liberal scholars such as Angell and Mitrany have been unfairly dismissed as 'idealists.' The final chapter evaluates the writings of Angell and Mitrany and claims that the works of both authors can be criticised for theoretical weaknesses common to the liberal paradigm.
