Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit, He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He cleanseth it. - john XV. 1, 2. A vine is planted solely for the sake of its fruit. There are many sorts of vines, each with its different sort of fruit. When a husbandman plants a Vine or a vineyard, he selects that special sort of which he desires to have the fruit. The fruit will be the manifestation of his purpose. When God planted the Heavenly Vine, it was that its fruit might bring life and strength to dying men. The very life of God, which man had lost by the fall, was to be brought back to him by Christ from heaven; Christ was to be to men the True Tree of Life. In Him, the True, the Heavenly Vine, in His Word and work, in His life and death, the life of God was brought within reach of men; all who should eat of the fruit should live for ever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Vine: Unfermented or Fermented-Which? In the controversial portion of this work the writer has carefully omitted the names of the advocates for the use of fermented wine. He has done this for two reasons: First, he desires no personal controversy; Second, he feels that the day is not far distant when the writers, or their successors or descendants, will regret to see their names connected with the advocacy of intoxicating drinks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Bodega: The Fruit of the Vine To him the fruitful Grape is a source of bitter fruit indeed; he summons the humble and lowly to forsake the illusory joys of the beverage - to endeavor and dis pute in a noble pursuit that is far from vain. It is of interest to note that the city about which the action of the novel centers - Jerez de la Frontera - gives the name to sherry. The former spelling of Jerez was with an X, anciently pronounced like sh. The full name of the town signifies Jerez of the Frontier. It is situated some fifteen miles from Cadiz. Another point of interest in connection with wine-manufacture in this district is that the bodegas, or wine-sheds, are above ground. Download or read book New Process for the Culture of the Vine (Classic Reprint) written by Jean Francois Persoz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Process for the Culture of the Vine The experiments of Prof. Persoz having been conducted upon no very extended scale, afforded him no Opportunity of testing the vinous qual ity of the grape but since the very elements indicated by nature, are offered to the plant, and are assimilated by it, there should be no reasonable doubt that the excellence of the fruit for vinification will prove to correspond with the healthfulness of the vine. Rich ma nures, as is well known, have always been avoided by the wise cultivator, whose desire is to produce a full-flavored, saccharine grape and in certain localities of France, the municipal authority has interfered to prevent the use of such gross stimulants, which, while they produce abundant wood and large crops of fruit, impart something of their rankness to the juice. Book Synopsis Vine Pruning (Classic Reprint) by : Frederic Theodore Bioletti
Download or read book Vine Pruning (Classic Reprint) written by Frederic Theodore Bioletti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vine Pruning No cultivated plant is susceptible of such a variety of modes of training as the vin-, e and none can withstand such an amount of abuse in this matter and such radical interference with its natural mode of growth On the other hand, no other plant, perhaps, 15 so sensitive to proper treatment, or responds so readily to a rational mode of pruning and training. Objects OF pruning. - The objects of pruning are (a) to facilitate cultivation and gathering, (b) to increase the average yield, and (c) to improve the quality of fruit. The vine must not be trained so high that the grapes are difficult to gather, nor al lowed to spread its arms so wide that the cultivation of the ground is unduly interfered with. Vines untouched by the pruner's knife bear irregularly; a year of over-bearing being followed by several of under-bearing as a consequence of exhaustion caused by a too severe drain on the reserve forces of the plant. The grapes on untrained or improperly trained vines are exposed to different conditions of heat and light, and consequently develop and ripen unevenly.
