Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 3: February 21, 1925 Shipments of Florida oranges to February 7 were about cars less and grapefruit about 375 cars less than to the same time last season. This seems due largely to the fact that ship ments were rather late in getting under way, although with favorable marketing conditions the difference might have been much less. On.the basis of official estimates of the Florida citrus crop, this year's movement should be at least equal to last season's to a corresponding date, under the same condi tions. Although both oranges and grapefruit run heavily to small sizes, it is believed that there will be little difference in the final total volume for the two seasons, as enough new acreage has come into bearing this year to offset any difference that the smaller sizes may make. According to the Federal - State market news representative at Orlando, the December freeze in California introduced a rather speculative spirit into the market for Florida citrus, and there was a tendency on the part of growers to hold back until the effects of this freeze are fully apparent, Floods in Georgia tied up railroad traffic very seriously during the last two weeks of January, and this not only retarded shipments but also caused a heavier movement 'by boat. However, conditions were improving daily, and, with favorable weather, traffic through the Georgia gateways was expected to be normal in a short time. While there have been periods of depression in the Florida orange market, they have been of comparatively short duration and, as a general rule, declines and advances have been gradual. Prices ruled low after the heavy movement began, but the average has been substantially above that for last season, and dealers generally are of the opinion that the deal thus far has been satisfactory, all things considered. Grapefruit has been very draggy for the past two, months, with prices low. Demand, which has been limited since the middle of December, has been confined chiefly _to the best fruit. Records of auction sales in Chicago and New York indicate that a great deal of grapefruit has barely brought freight and packing costs. Less apricots are likely to be canned and dried this year than last because of a sharp cut in the California crop. In California, early-season sales of apricots for canning were at higher prices than a year earlier. Sweet Cherries. Production, forecast at 79,5h0 tons as of June l, is down 30 percent from.the large 1955 crop and 17 percent from average. Since production is higher in California, fresh market shipments in June and early July are expected to be up somewhat from a year earlier. Shipments later in the season probably will be smaller. Prices on New York and Chicago auctions in late May averaged somewhat lower than a year earlier. But in early June, prices for Bing cherries averaged somewhat higher. Sour Cherries. Estimates for the 1956 crops are available for only the 6 western States which last year accounted for 8 percent of the national crop. Production in these States is h percent above 1955 and 3 percent above average. Packers' stocks of canned sour cherries on May 1 were about 2% times those of a year earlier, while cold storage stocks of frozen cherries, mostly sour, were up 1h percent. Harvest of the new crop has not yet started and price quotations are not available. Prices for the 1955 crop were unusually low.
