Book excerpt: Donald Friend's legendary years in Bali in the 1960s and 1970s and his subsequent final decade in Australia are revealed in detail in this fourth and final volume of The Diaries of Donald Friend. In Bali he lives luxuriously, like a lorda even keeping his own gamelan orchestraa and becomes an international celebrity artist. He welcomes guests such as Mick Jagger and the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, entertains numerous other visitors who want to buy his paintings and drawings, and socialises freely with friends, including many other artists. He engages in significant building activity and property development while also producing superb illustrated manuscripts and books. And despite increasing ill-health, Friend continues to revel in his life's drama and creativity, remaining an eloquent, often charming and sometimes irascible companion. Including over 60 drawings from his diaries, many of them in colour, this volume confirms Friend's quicksilver creative brilliance and extraordinary insight. He is perhaps Australia's most important twentieth-century diarist.

Book excerpt: Anlaby Station is one of South Australia's best known pastoral properties. Once stretching between Kapunda and Robertstown it was renowned for its wool, exotic gardens and the lavish lifestyle of the Dutton family who were its owners for one hundred and forty years. Three generations of Campbells lived and worked there. Scottish immigrant Hugh Campbell was a shepherd in the 1860s and 1870s, his sons were boundary riders and station hands, and one, Charles, was the property's overseer from 1904 to 1938. In their time, Anlaby reached its peak in land size and sheep numbers then shrank. Telephones, electric light and motor vehicles were unknown to Hugh but familiar to Charles's children. World War One and the Great Depression threatened the security of their lives. Hugh's other sons made different lives away from Anlaby: as a teamster in Broken Hill, as a police trooper and railway worker in the Northern Territory, and a drover in Queensland. Their parent's quest for opportunity in far-off places lived on. Another stayed closer to home but was estranged from the family on Anlaby. The Campbells stories have been recreated using Anlaby records, family photographs, newspapers of the day and other historical sources relating to South Australia, Broken Hill and the Northern Territory. This is a lively account of the Campbell family, the communities in which they lived and the changes they experienced. Anlaby's own story, previously seen through the Duttons' lens, is given new life.'The Campbells of Anlaby 1860 to 1940' is a skilful blend of family and social history.

Book excerpt: Is increased defence spending all that Australia needs to ensure its national security? How well placed are we to deal with global shocks and surprises? How should Australia recalibrate its national security settings to deal with global disruption? Drawing on thirty years of experience as a senior government adviser on foreign policy, Allan Behm explores the thinking behind Australia’s security approach and how it’s been shaped by Australia’s cultural and historical experiences. He argues that our mindset is built around pathologies: racism, misogyny, isolation, insecurity, a brashness that masks a deep lack of self-confidence, and the perverse effects of the cultural cringe. No Enemies No Friends doesn’t just show why Australia has become so good at getting things so wrong. Rather, Behm offers practical policy ideas, imbued with optimism, arguing we have every capability to improve. We need to maintain a credible defence force and invest in diplomacy to reduce our dependence on military force and defence alliances. Forward-looking, this is a meditation on how to approach international affairs with sure-footedness in a less predictable world. This is crucial for maintaining Australia’s long-term security and establishing the nation’s confidence to become a significant international actor.

Book excerpt: George French Angas (1822-1886) spent 18 months sketching and observing in Australia and New Zealand between 1844 and 1845. It was a period of decisive and irreversible cultural change. The young Angas excelled at capturing the minute detail of plants and people, objects and landscapes, and rapidly assembled a portfolio of 250 fine watercolours. In this fully illustrated volume, Philip Jones has used Angas's sketches, watercolours, lithographs and journal accounts to retrace his Antipodean journeys in vivid detail. Set in the context of his time, Angas emerges both as a brilliant artist and as a flawed Romantic idealist, rebelling against his father's mercantilism while entirely reliant upon the colonial project enabling him to depict pre- and early colonial ways of life.

Book excerpt: He's been the 'go to' legal commentator on ABC local radio for two decades, and a regular contributor on legal matters for The Conversation and The Advertiser. Veteran federal parliamentarian Christopher Pyne once described him as his favourite electoral opponent. Now that he's retired, Rick Sarre has written a series of personal reflections on education, politics, history, sport, religion, legal practice, academia, travel, and family life. Drawing upon 50 years of daily journal writing, in stories each of 500 words, Rick ponders his successes and failures, his joys and heartbreaks, and his likes and dislikes. He reveals his favourite acquaintances and the lessons that his life's journey has offered him. His conclusion? That our existence on this planet is rich with meaning. While sometimes tinged with sadness, our lives are often punctuated with moments of exhilaration and peppered with random acts of kindness. These experiences are worth celebrating at every turn. In Rick's own words, that's life, actually.

Book excerpt: Set in Australia, a landscape scarred by a troubled past, The Custodians tells the stories of a group of friends as they move away from their shared world. These are the custodians, but of what, and for whom? The Custodians is a dramatic and powerful novel about friendship, love, betrayal and history: an intimate portrait of a generation of people who belong to a land that does not belong to them. ‘A brilliantly vivid tapestry of the Australian predicament, rich in possibility, but shot through with accident and revelation. Through it all breathes the ancient reality of the land: its red earth and bright air painted with the sure hand of a master’ Simon Schama ‘Epic in its architecture, richly filigreed with intimate and erotic detail, The Custodians . . . catches you gasping with joy of recognition and shock of surprise in its revelations of an Australian generation’s experience. I love this book’ Scott Hicks, writer/director of Shine ‘In Nicholas Jose’s highly enjoyable new novel, a panoramic lens sweeps across a whole Australian generation . . . This fine book is an anatomy lesson of a land and its people as they were and are, and a spritely, often amused and amusing rendering of modern mores: not just a book about identity and sense of place, but about loyalty to one’s place’ Catherine Storey, Independent ‘A novel of characters but also of ideas that takes us to the heart of Australia now’ David Malouf
