Book Synopsis The Birth of Modern Politics by : Lynn Hudson Parsons
Download or read book The Birth of Modern Politics written by Lynn Hudson Parsons and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1828 presidential election, which pitted Major General Andrew Jackson against incumbent John Quincy Adams, has long been hailed as a watershed moment in American political history. It was the contest in which an unlettered, hot-tempered southwestern frontiersman, trumpeted by his supporters as a genuine man of the people, soundly defeated a New England "aristocrat" whose education and political résumé were as impressive as any ever seen in American public life. It was, many historians have argued, the country's first truly democratic presidential election. It was also the election that opened a Pandora's box of campaign tactics, including coordinated media, get-out-the-vote efforts, fund-raising, organized rallies, opinion polling, campaign paraphernalia, ethnic voting blocs, "opposition research," and smear tactics. In The Birth of Modern Politics, Parsons shows that the Adams-Jackson contest also began a national debate that is eerily contemporary, pitting those whose cultural, social, and economic values were rooted in community action for the common good against those who believed the common good was best served by giving individuals as much freedom as possible to promote their own interests. The book offers fresh and illuminating portraits of both Adams and Jackson and reveals how, despite their vastly different backgrounds, they had started out with many of the same values, admired one another, and had often been allies in common causes. But by 1828, caught up in a shifting political landscape, they were plunged into a competition that separated them decisively from the Founding Fathers' era and ushered in a style of politics that is still with us today.
Book Synopsis France and 1848 by : William Fortescue
Download or read book France and 1848 written by William Fortescue and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive and authoritative study that examines the economic, social and political crises of France during the revolution of 1848. Using analysis of original sources and recent research, Fortescue here offers new interpretations of events leading up to and after the second republic was declared. Looking at Louis Philippe's overthrow, the proclamation of manhood suffrage and the unexpected success of the right-wing in the subsequent elections, this book evaluates the political history of France in 1848 and the French political culture of the time. This should be read by all students of nineteenth century history, political scientists and all those with an interest in the historical development of French political culture.
Book Synopsis The 1830 Revolution in France by : P. Pilbeam
Download or read book The 1830 Revolution in France written by P. Pilbeam and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-07-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the nature and scope of the 1830 French revolution. Recent developments in the study of history and in the world have done much to overturn established ideas, both of marxists who believed all revolutions led to socialism, and of liberals who feared violence, but who assumed democracy would triumph. Wedged between the revolutions of 1789 and 1848, the author asks was 1830 a minor bourgeois Parisian event? Although politically avoidable, Dr Pilbeam demonstrates that socially it was part of a long-running struggle of peasants and artisans to preserve their way of life.

Book Synopsis The Revolting French, 1787–1889 by : Pamela Pilbeam
Download or read book The Revolting French, 1787–1889 written by Pamela Pilbeam and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the impact of revolution on the French from the Revolution of 1789 to its centenary in 1889. It explores specific and linking factors in the main revolts and how historians have differed in their explanations. Revolution has been explained in a multitude of ways from economic, social and philosophic, to a range of identities including religion, race and gender, contingency, emotions, and most recently global factors. The nineteenth-century French state was threatened by an unprecedented number of revolts. What impact did the 1789 Revolution have on nineteenth-century events? Why were there so many revolutions at the time? Were there common factors? Were non-revolutionary issues as significant or more significant in provoking change? Why was it that insurrection was rarer in the second half of the century when revolutionary rhetoric was more prolific? The book weighs political and philosophical differences, lack of trust and willingness to compromise, economic, social and cultural issues, urban geography, archaeology and contingency. The final section presents some contemporary explanations, written and visual. This book will be essential reading for A-level and undergraduate historians of France and Europe and will be of interest to general readers keen to understand the impact of revolutions in the modern world.
Book Synopsis Republicanism in Nineteenth-Century France, 1814–1871 by : Pamela Pilbeam
Download or read book Republicanism in Nineteenth-Century France, 1814–1871 written by Pamela Pilbeam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-02-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating survey of nineteenth-century republicanism, the first of its kind this century. It investigates why it was that although France was one of the first countries in modern Europe to become a republic in 1792, it was nearly a hundred years before a republic was acceptable to the majority. Pamela Pilbeam suggests that republicanism was a witch's brew of Enlightenment rationality, bloody memories and conflicting socialist expectations. The book concludes that the successful republic of 1871 used the rhetoric of democracy to conceal persistent elitism.

Book Synopsis When the French Tried to Be British by : J.A.W. Gunn
Download or read book When the French Tried to Be British written by J.A.W. Gunn and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In When the French Tried to Be British, J.A.W. Gunn studies the French effort during 1814 to 1848 to adopt the set of common understandings that lent a comparative stability to British government. The institutions of a loyal opposition and disciplined political parties seemed to be implicit in the parliamentary model, but their acceptance foundered on French reluctance to accord legitimacy to political opponents. A sophisticated minority - including such major figures as Chateaubriand, Constant, Mme de Sta l, and Guizot - recognized the need for something approaching the British political culture, but the wounds opened by the Revolution could not readily be healed. A more or less complete acceptance of the civil disagreement that was the spirit of the British model had to await the Fifth Republic.
