Book Synopsis The Freight Story by : Harry Caldwell

Book excerpt: Although efforts to improve freight transportation efficiency and reliability have been successful, the U.S. transportation system is now facing challenges that, unless addressed, may jeopardize its reliability. Allowing transportation system reliability to erode would add additional pressure to U.S. companies operating in an increasingly competitive international market and place more burdens on communities seeking to sustain their economic base and quality of life. Improved logistics has thus far been able to address the corrosive effects of the loss of system reliability. Unfortunately, the ability of logistics to provide additional offsetting savings appears to be nearing its limit, as are the savings attributable to deregulation. Unless these challenges are addressed, more discretionary income will be devoted to moving materials and products, businesses will be constrained in their adoption of innovative strategies to maintain global competitiveness, quality of life-as measured by congestion-will suffer, and safety and security could be jeopardized.

Book Synopsis Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology by : Tiago A. Santos
Download or read book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology written by Tiago A. Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough understanding of Short Sea Shipping (SSS) and its role in transport chains, presenting a revision of EU policies for SSS. Infrastructure and equipment required for the success of SSS are discussed, including critical features of modern roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships and terminals. Models are proposed for the evaluation of transportation demand in SSS, including the potential effects of external costs, and its results are used within the scope of methods for Ro-Ro ship and fleet sizing. A discussion of methods used to calculate such costs is provided, and a comparison of aggregated demand with and without internalisation of external costs is carried out, pointing towards solutions for ‘greening’ freight transportation. Applications of multi-criteria decision-making and simulation techniques to supply chains based on SSS are presented. The role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the promotion of SSS is also discussed. A number of case studies illustrate the different research methods and techniques. This book is a useful resource for students and researchers studying transportation, as well as policymakers and practitioners involved in this field and anyone with an interest in the promotion of environmentally sound transport solutions.
Book Synopsis The Organization of Transport by : Massimo Moraglio
Download or read book The Organization of Transport written by Massimo Moraglio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, the study of mobility has demonstrated groundbreaking approaches and new research patterns. These investigations criticize the concept of mobility itself, suggesting the need to merge transport and communication research, and to approach the topic with novel instruments and new methodologies. Following the debates on the role of users in shaping transport technology, new mobility research includes debates from sociology, planning, economy, geography, history, and anthropology. This edited volume examines how users, policy-makers, and industrial managers have organized and continue to organize mobility, with a particularly attention to Europe, North America, and Asia. Taking a long-term and comparative perspective, the volume brings together thirteen chapters from the fields of urban studies, history, cultural studies, and geography. Covering a variety of countries and regions, these chapters investigate how various actors have shaped transport systems, creating models of mobility that differ along a number of dimensions, including public vs. private ownership and operation as well as individual vs. collective forms of transportation. The contributions also examine the extent to which initial models have created path dependencies in terms of technology, physical infrastructure, urban development, and cultural and behavioral preferences that limit subsequent choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most prominent aspects of the current transportation landscape is the rapid integration of emerging technologies. The rise of electric and autonomous vehicles has become a focal point, with major automotive companies investing heavily in research and development to bring these technologies to mainstream use. Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. The development of advanced battery technologies has addressed some of the limitations of EVs, such as range anxiety, and governments worldwide are incentivizing the adoption of electric vehicles through subsidies and infrastructure investments.

Book Synopsis Transport Policy: Learning Lessons from History by : Prof Dr Colin Divall
Download or read book Transport Policy: Learning Lessons from History written by Prof Dr Colin Divall and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key aim of this volume is to demonstrate ways in which an understanding of history can be used to inform present-day transport and mobility policies. This is not to say that history repeats itself, or that every contemporary transport dilemma has an historical counterpart: rather, the contributors to this book argue that in many contexts of transport planning a better understanding of the context and consequences of past decisions and processes could lead to more effective policy decisions. Collectively the authors explore the ways in which the methods and approaches of historical research may be applied to contemporary transport and policy issues across a wide range of transport modes and contexts. By linking two bodies of academic research that for the most part remain separate this volume helps to inform current transport and mobility policies and to stimulate innovative new research that links studies of both past and present mobilities.
