Book excerpt: This book presents up-to-date information on foxtail millet genomics, with a particular focus on its agronomic importance, genome architecture, marker development, evolutionary and diversity studies, comparative genomics and stress biology. The topics discussed have the potential to open up a new era of crop improvement in foxtail millet and other related grass species. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is the oldest domesticated crop in the world (domesticated >8700 years ago) and it has been extensively grown in the semi-arid regions of Asia, Europe and the Americas as a food and fodder crop ever since. Further, as a C4 crop with close genetic relatedness to several biofuel grasses, foxtail millet has been promoted as a model plant. In view of its importance, the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute and Beijing Genomics Institute have independently sequenced the genome of foxtail millet. The availability of the draft genome sequence has advanced the genomics and genetics of this important crop, resulting in the development of large-scale genome-wide molecular markers and demonstration of their utility in genomics-assisted breeding, as well as the identification of the molecular and biological roles of several stress-responsive gene families in connection with abiotic stress tolerance. In addition, several open access databases have been developed to make these resources for crop improvement through structural and functional genomics widely available.

Book excerpt: Are you a furry? A Fox Tail is unapologetically furry, and if you're ready to meet Vulpie, the legendary hacker, prankster, and all around brilliant orange furred fox, you're ready to enjoy a book that will solidify the anthropomorphic landscape forever. Polar, a handsome arctic wolf, crosses paths with Vulpie just as the fox boy is about to unleash his life's greatest work, the computer Virus/AI, Vulpie.net.In a world of carnivores and herbivores, carnivores have the upper paws and everyone knows foxes control the media. Wolves are figureheads and make much of the success, but there has always been a sly fox somewhere in the fate of all great things. Polar and Vulpie display that, and all Polar wants is to keep Vulpie as his lover but taming the fox boy proves difficult. The hacker wreaks havoc throughout the universe by use of his artificial intelligence, and is able to control robotic soldiers, personal computers, bank accounts, and even the world government mainframe. Even though Polar succeeds in winning over Vulpie from his criminal ways, Vulpie.net itself develops a particularly disturbing personality. Somehow, it concludes that it is the hacker named "Evil Vulpie," yet the artificial intelligence also is aware that it did not write itself, and is merely imitating its creator. This contradiction does not please Vulpie.net. In fact, it makes Vulpie.net quite upset and it takes actions to reverse some of its parameters regarding which Vulpie is the real one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds hold an enigmatic and sometimes-controversial place in agriculture, where they are generally reviled, grudgingly tolerated, and occasionally admired. In most cases, growers make considerable effort to reduce the negative economic impact of weeds because they compete with crops for resources and hinder field operations, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. Weed control in production agriculture is commonly achieved through the integration of chemical, biological, and mechanical management methods. Chemicals (herbicides) usually inhibit the growth and establishment of weed plants by interfering with various physiological and biochemical pathways. Biological methods include crop competition, smother crops, rotation crops, and allelopathy, as well as specific insect predators and plant pathogens. Mechanical methods encompass an array of tools from short handled hoes to sophisticated video-guided robotic machines. Integrating these technologies, in order to relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimize profits and preserve human health and the environment, is the science of weed management.

Book excerpt: Holy Cream Puff recounts the incomparable encounters of a young boy who revels in the joie de vivre of Maisonneuve, an East End of Montreal francophone community in the 1940s and 1950s. Charged with an abundance of humorous and mischievous ploys ready to be ignited at a moment’s notice, Nicolas, his admirable dog, and their jovial gang form a unique bond to support one another. You will discover how Nicolas deals with the many challenging moments of his life: Amusing: “We bombarded them with snowballs and ran away to our impregnable snow fort in the alley to defend against their counter attack.” Suspenseful: “The ghastly silence of the night was frightening. The sounds of the attendants unloading a dead body interrupted the silence.” Gripping: “A huge white giant dressed in black appeared from nowhere. The monster that swallows kids that don’t speak English, I thought, trembling.” Nail-biting: “With one-minute remaining, the score was tied 2-2. My heart pounded like a thousand drums and the roaring of the crowd vibrated right down to my bones.” Heart-breaking at times: “The taxi drove off. I yelled hysterically. My dog’s eyes opened for an instant. He panted and gasped to regain his breath.” Learning important values: “Michel taught me to never misjudge anyone. He dealt with everyday living with dignity. I discovered Michel’s IQ was higher than the rest of us average guys.” Contesting life lessons: “You know papa, the more I learn about God at school, the more confused I become.” “I don’t always understand either my son. The mysteries of life are exactly that, a mystery.”

Book excerpt: The term "Nutri-Cereals" has been dedicated to ten cereals due to their unique nutritional benefits. Nutri-Cereals: Nutraceutical and Techno-Functional Potential covers these cereal grains, with each chapter focusing on nutrient composition and bioactive characterization followed by associated bio-functional properties and health benefits. Further, it covers techno-functionality of nutri-cereals including rheological properties, emulsification and foaming potential, gelation behavior, color profile and others which dictate the suitability of cereals in finished products. Key Features: Covers diverse biological and functional features of nutri-cereals to dictate their potential as functional ingredients in value-added products Discusses the nutraceutical potential of ten cereals: sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, little millet, proso millet, black wheat and Amaranthus Explains how these grains are ideal ingredients for gluten free food formulations with enhanced bio- and techno-functional characteristics Although many of the nutri-cereals have been known for thousands of years, due to their coarse nature and lack of processing they escaped the human diet. Now, thanks to their excellent agro-economic potential and numerous health benefits, they are once again recognized as functional ingredients. Recently, earmarked investment and funding have been observed for valorization of these crops and thus, this book will help academicians to strengthen future investigations.

Book excerpt: Plant Breeding Reviews presents state-of-the-art reviews on plant genetics and the breeding of all types of crops by both traditional means and molecular methods. Many of the crops widely grown today stem from a very narrow genetic base; understanding and preserving crop genetic resources is vital to the security of food systems worldwide. The emphasis of the series is on methodology, a fundamental understanding of crop genetics, and applications to major crops. The series is sponsored by the American Society for Horticultural Science and appears in the form of one or two volumes per year.
