Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of the Ninety-Fourth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in the War of the Rebellion The history of any one volunteer regiment in the War of the Rebellion is, doubtless, very much the same as that of other regiments of the same line of service. The President's proclamations calling for volunteers, at the dates and for the numbers hereinafter mentioned, gave opportunities for enlistment according to the judgment and inclinations of different persons. There were some men with fewer hindrances than other; and some men were more disposed to adventure than others; and doubtless some men were more ready to risk their lives than others; but all men who enlisted when they believed their services were required for the prosecution of the war and the preservation of the Union should be esteemed equally patriotic. There was no regiment composed of men wholly of the same occupation. There was scarcely a company in which there were not men of nearly every profession and occupation. The volunteer army demonstrated a problem in a republican form of government which, in the minds of many people, especially in Europe, was of doubtful solution. It fully settled the question of the will and power of the people, in the absence of a large standing army, to fight their own battles, if necessary, in defense of the Republic. Everywhere, even among ourselves, there is a better understanding of the nature and stability of the Union. It is not at all probable that any sane man will ever again deem it possible to disrupt this Union by engaging in civil war. That question is settled by the arbitrament of arms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Fourth Regiment Ohio Veteran Volunteer Cavalry: From the Organization of the Regiment, August, 1861, to Its 50th Anniversary, August, 1911; Based on the Book of 1890 At first the novelty of camp life, of bright uniforms, of military drill excited him to dreams of future greatness; he knew that the atten tion of the whole world was focused on him personally; he heard much of a soldier's duty, and of praise for his progress in military tactics from the general orders of his commanding officer. So he swaggered a bit was eager for dress parade and intensely interested in the impression his regiment made. Gradually he evolved into the seasoned soldier, and as the work grew more exhausting, dangerous, and life grew grimmer, he found himself too close to and too vitally concerned with the big issues to com ment much on them. It was not his business to talk, but to work, and where history gives us glowing and stirring narratives of great battles, the common soldier has left a few laconic lines in his diary, and' tells of the trivial things in his letters home. After the lapse of years these few lines often serve to galvanize his memory - he lives over again stirring events, has time now to feel, Where in the stress of battle he must con serve all his energies for action. He recalls now that he was just a strong, young fellow with youth's appetite for food, pleasure and adventure, Often homesick for the comforts and companionship of his little home town, but Willing to endure his new life because he was a good American citizen, born with a sense of liberty, equality and justice; willing to fight for their maintenance. It was the enthusiasm and endurance of the American boy from seventeen to twenty-two years of age which really sustained the Union. It is to commemorate such a part, played by the soldiers of the Fourth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, that this work has been compiled as a memorial to their youth on the fiftieth anniversary of their call to arms. Book excerpt: The 124th Regiment, Ohio Voluntary Infantry was a Union Army regiment set up in the summer of 1862, occasioned by the necessity for the "300,000 more" to put down the slaveholder's rebellion (of the American Civil War). This book is a historical account of the regiment's activities during the war, as written by soldier G. W. Lewis, who later served as the Regiment's Major. It captures their major campaigns such as the Campaign of Chattanooga, the Battle of Chickamauga, The Siege of Chattanooga, The Battle of Lookout Mountain, And the Storming of Missionary Ridge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry This volume is offered to survivors of the regiment as an outline history only; a bare statement of events with which we were closely identified, arranged chronologically, leaving comrades to supply details from memory. A more minute history would require access to official reports, orders etc., which the writer has not been able to obtain. What there is of the military history of the Officers and Men has been obtained under great difficulties. When the writer first determined to make a complete roster of the regiment, he expected to find all the material for such a paper in the Adjutant-General's office, at Columbus, but beyond the original muster-in rolls, this office has no records of our regiment, all others being at Washington City. Personal application for permission to copy, as well as a similar application by Adjutant-General Smith, of our State, was met by the statement that no copy of the rolls could be made by others than the clerks of the Department, and that they were so pressed with work that the courtesy was impossible. For this reason, all facts as to recruits, promotions, transfers, discharges, deaths, etc., have been obtained through a very general correspondence with comrades, many of whom have valuable memoranda. Great care has been taken to verify all statements as to those killed, dying in hospital, discharged or transferred; and all those enrolled and not thus accounted for, or by muster-out, may fairly be presumed to have served out their full time. Doubtless, errors and imperfections will be found in the roster, but it may serve as a basis for another, when some one, with better facilties, may undertake a more perfect record. As it is, the writer offers the result of his labors to his old comrades with the hope that they will find it of interest and value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaigns of the 124th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry: With Roster and Roll of Honor The campaigns of the One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, if written at all, should have been written nearer the close of the war, while the stirring scenes and events of those years of daring, duty and glory were vivid in the mind of the writer. The "Campaigns" should have been written by one that had intended to write them from the first, and had made such due and proper preparation during the time the same were going forward as would enable him to collect the necessary data for a correct and valuable history of the men, the companies and the regiment as an entirety. The "Campaigns" should have been written by one that had as full knowledge of the entire regiment as the author of these imperfect sketches had of the company he commanded during the service.
