D. 1547-1662 The First Part of this History, dealing with the ante cedents of the Reformation, and with the period from 15 14 to 1547, was published in the year 1869, and has since passed through several editions. During the twelve years which have intervened, the writer has been so constantly called to the fulfilment of other literary engagements that he has only recently found time for putting into shape the materials which he had long ago collected for this second volume. The delay has, however, enabled him to go on adding to those materials, and he has thus been able to present the work to the reader in a more complete form, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconstruction of the English Church, Vol. 2 A very careful compilation of figures has been made by select ing from the most trustworthy sources1 the actual number of minis ters who had been summoned or who were thought to be noncon formable, with a View of finding how many men might have been pro ceeded against. It should not be forgotten that every minister, who was properly Puritan, felt himself threatened by the orders to en force conformity and that therefore very nearly the whole strength of the party ought to be found in the estimate. The tally of 297 men2 gives nearly the figure we meet so often in Puritan accounts, and is very near the 281 men whose names are now known as adhe rents of the party.' The figure 300, therefore, which we meet so often is more likely the number of men who believed themselves to be threatened than the number who were actually proceeded against by the bishops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anglo-Saxon Home IT is the object of the following pages to give a true picture of the domestic life of our anglo-saxon fore fathers, and in so doing to trace the gradual development among them of the domestic affections and of the morals and manners of private life. There are numerous works by distinguished writers on the history of the anglo-saxon Church, and on its theological opinions. There are also many, by scholars of no less eminence, exclusively devoted to the political state of our ancient commonwealth. The literature of the period has been examined and illustrated with the greatest learning and ability; and its civil and military annals have been traced and criticised in all the most famous histories of England. There is not, however, to the best of my belief, any work devoted to the history of the anglo-saxon home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendious History of English Literature, and of the English Language, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Norman Conquest With Numerous Specimens The permanent suppression of theatrical entertainments was the act of the Long Parliament. An ordinance of the Lords and Commons passed on the 2d of September, 1642, - after setting forth that public sports do not well agree with public calamities, nor public stage-plays with the seasons of humiliation, this being an exercise of sad and pious solemnity, and the other being Spec taeles of pleasure, too commonly expressing lascivious mirth and levity, ordained, that, while these sad causes and set times of humiliation do continue, public stage-plays shall cease and be for borne. It has been plausibly conjectured that this measure orig inated, not merely in a spirit of religious dislike to dramatic per formances, but in a politic caution, lest play-writers and players should avail themselves of their power over the minds of the peo ple to instil notions and opinions hostile to the authority of a puri tanical parliament. 1 This ordinance certainly put an end at once to the regular performance of plays but it is known to have been occasionally infringed; and there is reason to believe that after a few years it began to be pretty frequently and openly disregarded. This would appear to have been the case from a new ordinance of the Lords and Commons published in October, 1647, entitled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, that I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman ofthe highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the State of Science - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical know ledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the State of the Arts amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgments are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his. I find most of our writers have taken parcels out of them, and Sir John Heyward has transcribed from them the greatest part of his book; therefore I thought this a thing of such consequence, that upon good advice I, have published them all, faithfully copied from the originals.
