Book excerpt: The following text has been drawn from Sir Richard Burton's exhaustive translation of "The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night", more commonly known as "The Arabian Nights". The story of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" is one of the more popular of those found in "The Arabian Nights" collection. It tells the story of Ali Baba who while chopping wood in the forest discovers the secret hiding place for the treasure of a band of forty thieves. The treasure is sealed in a magic cave which opens by the command "open simsim", or "open sesame". This classic tale is presented here in this edition in its original and unexpurgated form.

Book excerpt: The Banbury Cross Series was a collection of 12 volumes of books edited by Grace Rhys and published in London by Dent in the 1890s. Each book is attractively illustrated with full page and partial page pen and ink drawings in a classic Art Nouveau style by leading artists of the era. Here the Eastern classic Ali Baba is reworked and presented with H. Granville Fell's stunning black and white illustrations that beautifully complement the oriental traditions of the tale. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 225 ÿ In this 225th issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Arabian Nights story of ?THE STORY OF ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES?. ONCE upon a time, long, long ago and far, far away in a town in Persia lived two brothers named Cassim and Ali Baba, between whom their father at his death had left what little property he possessed equally divided. Ali married a wife as poor as himself, and having no other means of gaining a livelihood he used to go every day into the forest to cut wood, and lading therewith the three asses which were his sole stock-in-trade, would then hawk it about the streets for sale. One day while he was at work within the skirts of the forest, Ali Baba saw advancing towards him across the open a large company of horsemen, and fearing from their appearance that they might be robbers, he left his asses to their own devices and sought safety for himself in the lower branches of a large tree which grew in the close overshadowing of a precipitous rock. Almost immediately it became evident that this very rock was the goal toward which the troop was bound, for having arrived they alighted instantly from their horses, and took down each man of them a sack which seemed by its weight and form to be filled with gold. There could no longer be any doubt that they were robbers. Ali Baba counted forty of them. Just as he had done so, the one nearest to him, who seemed to be their chief, advanced toward the rock, and in a low but distinct voice uttered the two words "OPEN SESAME!" Immediately the rock opened like a door, the captain and his men passed in, and the rock closed behind them. And thus begins the story and adventures of Ali Baba. We invite you to download the story here and read the full tale of Ali Baba, his wife and the Forty Thieves and the many adventures they had. ÿ 33% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ÿ INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE STORIES ÿ Each issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story. HINT - use Google maps. ÿ Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves: An Extract From Dr. Weil's German Translation of the Arabian Nights All teachers of modern languages must feel the need of varying the reading-matter used in their elementary classes. Not only do they themselves tire of going over and over familiar ground, but their pupils are apt to con ceive a certain contempt for a language which they see represented, year after year, by the same two or three time-honored productions. The so-called literal transla tions, too, whose existence encourages great numbers of students to neglect their regular work, are sure to ap pear when the same selections are often repeated. In dealing with a language as rich in stories as is the Ger man, it would seem that the desired variety might easily be obtained. The di iculties of a choice, should, however, not be overlooked. It is not enough that a piece be easy and well written: in order to be perfectly successful, it must also suit the taste of the pupils who will use it; that is to say, if it be intended for American youths, it must be neither sad, nor sentimental, nor metaphysical.a preface. The following story from Dr. Gustav Weil's translation of the Arabian M'glzt: (stuttgart, r87 whatever objec tions may be made to it, certainly does not possess the undesirable qualities just mentioned. On the contrary, it furnishes not only good modern German of an easy kind, but a bright, interesting, uninterrupted narrative, such as novices in the study of a language are glad to find. The fact that most persons are already familiar with the tale does' not, it seems to me, impair its value as an exercise for beginners; at any rate, Grimm's Marc/zen, the most successful of all texts, are open to the same objection. The common English versions of the Arabian Nights, being taken from the French, scarcely resemble our text enough to serve as literal translations.
