The most up to date research findings have been divided into three volumes: • the Science ofClimate Change (working group I), • the Impacts, Adaption and Mitigation of Climate Change (working group II), and • the Economic and Social Dimensions ofClimate Change (working group III) There is a general consensus that a serious change in climate can only be avoided if the future emissions of greenhouse gases are reduced considerably from the business as usual projection and if at the same time the natural sinks for greenhouse gases, in particular that of CO , are maintained at the present level or 2 preferrably increased. Forests, forestry and forestry industry are important parts of the global carbon cycle and therefore they are also part of the mitigation potentials in at least a threefold way: 1. During the time period between 1980 and 1989 there was a net emission of CO from changes in tropical land use (mostly tropical deforestation) of 2 1. 6 +/- 1 GtC/a, but at the same time it was estimated that the forests in the northem hemisphere have taken up 0. 5 +/- 0. 5 GtC/a and additionally other terrestrial sinks (including tropical forests where no clearing took place) have been a carbon sink ofthe order of l. 3 +/- l.

However, despite the large body of research in the field, few studies have analyzed the trade-offs between carbon sequestration and utilization of wood products as substitutes for fossil-fuel intensive products. In this study, economic models of the Norwegian forest sector were applied to analyze costs and potentials of climate change mitigation policies in the sector. Policies targeting the entire sector are likely to decrease the mitigation costs substantially and increase the potential of mitigation. The study reveals the importance of integrated analyses including investment in forestry, harvest and various use of timber and their substitution effects in order to provide solid estimates of mitigation costs and potentials. This analysis would especially be of interest to anyone involved in climate change mitigation in the forest sector, as well as students and researchers of forest economics and in other sector where similar modeling approaches are useful.

It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM.

Book excerpt: Forests and harvested wood products (HWP) can significantly contribute to meet nationally determined contributions (NDC) arising from the Paris Agreement. The global forest-based sector (FBS) and its contribution to climate change mitigation is not only affected by climate change impacts and expected forest adaptation measures affecting harvest rates and wood delivery but is also facing structural changes through global shifts in production centres and changes in production and consumption patterns.The presented project analysed mid- to long-term developments in the Austrian wood-based value chain using a partial equilibrium dynamic forest sector model for different climate change impacts and related adaptation measures in the forests including six scenarios: - two business-as-usual scenarios (for RCP 4.5 and 8.5), - a scenario assuming tree species shift through adaptive management, - a catastrophe scenario with rising impacts from storm, bark beetle infestation, and dry spells, - a scenario implementing a reduction of the rotation period and - a scenario aiming at the increase of the growing stock in forests.Simulations were conducted for the time period 2010-2150 including long-term forecasts for economic framework conditions until 2050 and assumptions for constant market conditions after 2050. Results help contribute to the understanding of carbon dynamics through a cascade of models comprising forest management, harvested wood products and life cycle assessments (considering material & energy substitution). Identification of critical factors helps to assess the potential contribution of the FBS to NDC. Furthermore, associated impacts on forest product markets as well as interdependencies within the FBS can be identified.
