Download or read book The Tropical Timber Trade Regime written by F. Gale and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gale explains why international negotiations have not produced a sustainable solution to tropical rainforest degradation. Using an innovative, critical approach to international regimes, the author analyzes the structure and operation of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). He shows how the timber industry and producing- and consuming-country governments created a blocking alliance that favoured developmentalist interests and ideas. The ITTO bolstered this alliance by permitting environmentalists merely to voice, but not to negotiate, their concerns.

Book excerpt: In analysing the development and achievements of Polish forestry and forest industries over the last four decades, it is necessary to take into consideration the situation prevailing after the end of the Second World War, when these sectors of the national economy were starting their activities. First of all, it is necessary to consider the effects of the war such as: (a) the harvesting from the forests of the present Polish territory of 3 about 200 million m of merchantable wood, which is equal to the normal harvest over a l2-year period; (b) the destruction of over half the woodworking industrial potential. In consequence, the forested area inside the new Polish boundaries amounted 40 years ago only to 20.8 per cent of the whole area of the country. There has been a continuing process of increasing the forested area of the country (although at a diminishing rate). In 1986 the forest area amounted to 27.7 per cent of the land surface, that is to 8.7 million ha, an increase of over 2 million ha in 40 years. Intensive afforestation, performed regardless of the ownership category of the land by the State forest service, was aimed primarily at making good the losses in the forested area and the rational use of land not fit for agricultural purposes.

Book Synopsis Anthropogenic Tropical Forests by : Noboru Ishikawa
Download or read book Anthropogenic Tropical Forests written by Noboru Ishikawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this volume provide an ethnography of a plantation frontier in central Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Drawing on the expertise of both natural scientists and social scientists, the key focus is the process of commodification of nature that has turned the local landscape into anthropogenic tropical forests. Analysing the transformation of the space of mixed landscapes and multiethnic communities—driven by trade in forest products, logging and the cultivation of oil palm—the contributors explore the changing nature of the environment, multispecies interactions, and the metabolism between capitalism and nature. The project involved the collaboration of researchers specialising in anthropology, geography, Southeast Asian history, global history, area studies, political ecology, environmental economics, plant ecology, animal ecology, forest ecology, hydrology, ichthyology, geomorphology and life-cycle assessment. Collectively, the transdisciplinary research addresses a number of vital questions. How are material cycles and food webs altered as a result of large-scale land-use change? How have new commodity chains emerged while older ones have disappeared? What changes are associated with such shifts? What are the relationships among these three elements—commodity chains, material cycles and food webs? Attempts to answer these questions led the team to go beyond the dichotomy of society and nature as well as human and non-human. Rather, the research highlights complex relational entanglements of the two worlds, abruptly and forcibly connected by human-induced changes in an emergent and compelling resource frontier in maritime Southeast Asia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature and Nation explores the relations between people and forests in Peninsular Malaysia where the planet's richest terrestrial eco-system met head-on with the fastest pace of economic transformation experienced in the tropical world. It engages the interplay of history, culture, science, economics and politics to provide a holistic interpretation of the continuing relevance of forests to state and society in the moist tropics. Malaysia has long been singled out for emulation by developing nations, an accolade contradicted in recent years by concerns over its capital-, rather than poverty-driven forest depletion. The Malaysian case supports the call for re-appraisal of entrenched prescriptions for development that go beyond material needs. -- Book cover.

Book Synopsis Will Otto (1919-2008) by : Maarten F. Otto
Download or read book Will Otto (1919-2008) written by Maarten F. Otto and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.M. Otto PhD was director of the IJsselmeerpolders Development Authority, in the Netherlands, from 1963 to 1967. His contribution to the first development of Flevoland, which had been newly reclaimed from the sea, was very important. So the name ‘starter motor of Flevoland’ is justified. In this biography has been told how he led the designing and the first phase of the development of the new towns Lelystad and Almere. Will Otto was a tireless lobbyist for the interests of the former and the future population of Flevoland. A lot of them were originally inhabitants of Amsterdam. Otto was at the same time ‘landdrost’ of the Southern IJsselmeerpolders Public Authority, in Lelystad as well as in Dronten. He exercised the duties and powers of the municipal council, the municipal executive and the mayor together. In practice Otto cooperated well with the advisory council, which had been elected by the citizens. Otto also contributed to the land-use planning and the forestry policy in the Netherlands. His first job was forester in Dutch East Indies (1946-1950). Later he developed a vision on saving the tropical rainforest, especially in Indonesia. He initiated PROSEA (Plant Resources of South East Asia). This international project published 24 manuals, based on a database. This describes economically useful plants and trees in Southeast Asia. This title is a translation of Will Otto (1919-2008), Startmotor van Flevoland, which appeared in 2017 in Dutch. The PDF of the original title is free for all as well, and can be found here: https://www.barkhuis.nl/product/will-otto-1919-2008/.
