Download or read book Nameless Towns written by Thad Sitton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the sawmill towns of East Texas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sawmill communities were once the thriving centers of East Texas life. Many sprang up almost overnight in a pine forest clearing, and many disappeared just as quickly after the company “cut out” its last trees. But during their heyday, these company towns made Texas the nation’s third-largest lumber producer and created a colorful way of life that lingers in the memories of the remaining former residents and their children and grandchildren. Drawing on oral history, company records, and other archival sources, Sitton and Conrad recreate the lifeways of the sawmill communities. They describe the companies that ran the mills and the different kinds of jobs involved in logging and milling. They depict the usually rough-hewn towns, with their central mill, unpainted houses, company store, and schools, churches, and community centers. And they characterize the lives of the people, from the hard, awesomely dangerous mill work to the dances, picnics, and other recreations that offered welcome diversions. Winner, T. H. Fehrenbach Award, Texas Historical Commission “After completing the book, I truly understood life in the sawmill communities, intellectually and emotionally. It was very satisfying. Conrad and Sitton write in such a manner to make one feel the hard life, smell the sawdust, and share the danger of the mills. The book is compelling and stimulating.” —Robert L. Schaadt, Director-Archivist, Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center

Book excerpt: Once you're familiar with Will Malloff's method of chainsaw lumbermaking, you'll be simply and economically turning trees into lumber on your own Learn how to select the tree you want, fell it safely, and saw it into a fine pile of building or cabinet lumber. With detailed instructions and over 400 photographs, Will Malloff tells you everything you need to know to turn a chainsaw into a lumbermill, including how to: Modify the chainsaw and make numerous accessories for milling Use the equipment in the woods Grind a smooth-cutting ripping chain Build your own mill from a 2 x 4 and scraps of plywood Cut burls, shape ovals and mill natural knees for boatbuilding Malloff's method is the fruit of over 30 years' experience of felling trees and making lumber. He's logged everything from giant redwoods to desert mesquite and fulfilled his youthful ambition to fell timber in every major forest of North America. Drawing on this experience, he has invented several chainsaw mills, and perfected the easy, efficient method of chainsaw lumbermaking that he describes in this book. If you've ever had trouble finding the lumber you need, or wanted to build something with your own trees, "Chainsaw Lumbermaking" is the book you've been waiting for. Will Malloff has built a variety of mills and is the designer of what many consider the most effective chainsaw lumbermaking system available. Malloff has spent nearly half a century researching and developing tools and wood technology that minimize ecological impact. In an endeavor to build his own blacksmith shop on a Canadian Pacific island, he invented a state-of-the-art ripping chain, which made chainsaw lumbermaking more feasible and economical than ever before.
Download or read book Green Gold written by Doug McGuinn and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1904, when the Hassinger brothers ¿ Luther (L. C.), Will, and John ¿ came from the northwestern Pennsylvania county of Forest to the southwestern Virginia county of Washington with the idea of continuing their father¿s lumber business, they liked what they saw: thousands of acres of virgin forest. Two years later, they built a sawmill in Washington County and a company town to support its workers. L. C.¿s mother, Letisha, named the town Konnarock. In less than ten years, the Hassinger Lumber Company of Konnarock, Virginia, had employed over 400 workers, laid down over 75 miles of railroad track (they named their railroad the White Top Railway), built 20 logging camps, and sawed almost 60,000 board feet of lumber per day at its mill. Not only did the Hassinger Lumber Company cut timber in Washington County, Virginia, they also did extensive timbering in neighboring Ashe County, North Carolina, and also sawed timber cut in Watauga County, North Carolina, when the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company, located in the Watauga County village of Deep Gap, bought the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay locomotive No. 3, sending its logs to the Hassinger sawmill in Konnarock, 50 miles away. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best wood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. This book contains the story of the Hassinger Lumber Company and its company town, Konnarock, as well as information about the Beaver Dam Railroad, the Laurel Railway (both located in the northeastern Tennessee county of Johnson), the Virginia¿Carolina Railway (the ¿Virginia Creeper¿), the logging of the Pond Mountain area of Ashe County, North Carolina, by the Damascus Lumber Company, and the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s logging operations in the Elkland (present-day Todd) area of Ashe County.
