Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gérard Pidoux is Niçois, by adoption, it is true, but that doesn't make him any more Niçois than the other Niçois; that would be ungracious. When he aarrived in La Bella during the fifties with his parents, the town and its inhabitants offered everything to this little Parisian boy of nine years old: a theatre of infinite games, beaches, hills, streets, and friends. Extraordinary friends. That, and being surrounded by a wonderful family, albeit small, made him a happy child! He is justifiably nostalgic and endeavours to bring back the not-so-distant memories of the post-war years within one of the most engaging of large towns: Nissa la Bella. At that time, the Promenade des Anglais ended just after the Negresco, where the Boulevard de Gambetta leads to the Mediterranean. The fishing boats were on the beach. A little further back was Rue Saint-Philippe. The Dyna Panhards, Simca cinqs, and other cars made their way, with difficulty, between the kings of the highway - the tramways - that were packed with fare dodgers. It was here that a small group of children, caught between the sea and the hills, were determined to amuse themselves... The telly? Never heard of it. Records? Le Tepaz record player was for adults. Ahura qué fin? Now what are they going to do? 'We'll go to the Collinettes of course!'

Book excerpt: Wild Talents captures Charles Fort at his finest, most thought-provoking, and is considered his wittiest work. Containing accounts of--among numerous other bizarre topics--strange coincidences, vampires, werewolves, talking dogs, poltergeist activity, teleportation, witchcraft, vanishing people, spontaneous human combustion, and the escapades of the 'mad bats of Trinidad.' This is essential reading for those who want to learn about the early years of research into the myriad mysteries of this world and beyond. CHARLES HOY FORT (1874-1932), life-long naturalist and independent journalist, wrote ten novels, though only one, The Outcast Manufacturers (1906), was published in the U.S. - critics said it was ahead of its time, but it was commercially unsuccessful. His most recognized work, The Book of the Damned (1919), referred to "damned data" that Fort collected, phenomena for which science could not account and was thus rejected or ignored. Upon his death in 1932, more than 60,000 notes were donated to The New York Public Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes 25 walks on the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm. From easy 5km (3-mile) day walks to the 61km (38-mile), 3-day Guernsey Coastal Walk, it explores the islands' varied landscapes and historic sites on mostly firm and well-surfaced paths and tracks, and quiet roads. Never straying far from the attractions and cafes that dot the islands, more rugged paths are occasionally used to access cliffs and headlands, although optional alternative routes and short cuts are included where relevant. Famous for its sunshine, history and wonderful coastline, Guernsey is a popular destination for travellers, boasting superb year-round walking no further than 2 miles from the sea. This guidebook presents a range of mostly circular routes exploring the Guernsey coast and interior, and the smaller islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm. Neighbouring walks can easily be combined into longer routes for walkers with more time or fitness. Routes feature 1:15,000 States of Guernsey maps, while flora and fauna and the fascinating history of the islands are also covered. Details are included of public transport, where to stay and how to travel between the islands, as well as connecting with the 182km (113-mile) Channel Island Way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England & Wales Island Bagging by Lisa Drewe is a stunning and informative guide to the islands of England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It is ideal for swimmers, kayakers, adventure travellers, wildlife spotters and ice cream connoisseurs. Go on an inspirational and fascinating coastline journey – familiar islands are visited, such as Lundy and the Isle of Wight; others are less well known, such as Gewni in Pembrokeshire and Coquet Island in Northumberland . Almost 300 islands are included, from larger, populated islands to remote, uninhabited islets – some can be reached by foot at low tide, others have ferry services, and some you will need your own transport, or be content to view them from the mainland. Once you've found your island this book introduces you to the best sites on the island to appreciate: hidden beaches and coves, the tastiest local food and the wildlife that can be seen in the locality. Watch the Cemlyn Bay terns on Anglesey, go paddleboarding around Mersea Island in Essex, walk in the footsteps of pilgrims on Lindisfarne in Northumberland, or enjoy ice cream from one of the smallest dairy herds in the country on St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly ... it's all there to be enjoyed in England & Wales Island Bagging.
