Book Synopsis Truth and the Comedic Art by : Michael Gelven
Download or read book Truth and the Comedic Art written by Michael Gelven and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional philosophy places a singular emphasis on tragedy, acting under the assumption that tragedy is more profound than comedy. Gelven argues that comedy deserves equal if not greater attention from philosophy. Through the interpretative readings and concrete analysis of three classical works, Gelven shows that comedy provides an access to truth unavailable by any other means. Silvius in Shakespeares's As You Like It, Cherubino in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and Lord Goring in Wilde's An Ideal Husband are examined in terms of why and how they are comic, along with how and why they are seen both as fools and yet as graced. Gelven finds that in revealing the spirit of graced folly, comedy teaches us about our own essence, the fundamental nature of our finitude. This will undoubtedly be of considerable importance not only to philosophical aestheticians or literary critics, but also for those seeking to understand the nature of truth itself.

Book Synopsis Radical Innocence by : Bernard F. Dick
Download or read book Radical Innocence written by Bernard F. Dick and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 30, 1947, the House Committee on Un-American Activities concluded the first round of hearings on the allege Communist infiltration of the motion picture industry. Hollywood was ordered to "clean its own house," and ten witnesses who had refused to answer questions about their membership in the Screen Writers Guild and the Communist party eventually received contempt citations. By 1950 the Hollywood Ten, as they quickly became known, were serving prison sentences ranging from six months to a year. Since that time the group, which included writers, directors, and a producer, have been either dismissed as industry hacks or eulogized as Cold War martyrs, but never have they been discussed in terms of their profession. Radical Innocence is the first study to focus on the work of the Ten: their short stories, plays, novels, criticism, poems, memoirs, and, of course, their films. Drawing on myriad sources, including archival materials, unpublished manuscripts, black-market scripts, screenplay drafts, letters, and personal interviews, Bernard F. Dick describes the Ten's survival tactics during the blacklisting and analyzes the contribution of these ten individuals no only to film but also to the arts. Radical Innocence captures the personality of each of the Ten -- the arrogant Herbert J. Biberman, the witty Ring Lardner, Jr., the patriarchal Samuel Ornitz, the compassionate Adrian Scott, and the feisty Dalton Trumbo.

THEY MET IN JERUSALEM A young Greek doctor, devoted to the pleasures of the senses and the intellect, and a passionate, pious daughter of Israel. Hopelessly in love, their beliefs were irreconcilable—until the Syrian-hordes struck at Jerusalem, defiling and slaughtering. Then the woman who loved God and the man who loved liberty united with the embattled Jews under the banner of Judas the Maccabee, to strike back at the enemy who would destroy them both! “...a richly informed addition to the author’s ‘Testament of Man’ series, sensitively created by the fusion of art and scholarship.”—The New York Times “Vardis Fisher is one of the most remarkable of American authors. Viewing himself, in effect, as the reincarnation of conflicting personalities of many generations, the recipient of the transmitted subconscious memories of centuries, Fisher went back in his Testament of Man’ to the ape-man progenitor and came up the long, uncertain booby-trapped path. He projected himself into the emerging, rising human being, and went with him through thousands of years of progressions, crises, setbacks, emotions, surges, to get at understanding, if he could, of the basic motivations today in the conduct of the heir of all the human race...the whole sequence is one of the most extraordinary feats in imaginative divination in original Occidental literature.”—Clark Kinnaird, King Features Syndicate “...well-told historical tale...crisp, vigorous”—San Francisco Chronicle
