Book excerpt: British influence on nineteenth-century Brazil was so prevalent it gave rise to the complaint that it was 'Londonising our land'. Previously isolated by the Portuguese to control the colony's riches, everything changed with Napoleon's invasion of Portugal in 1807 -- King Dom João fled to Brazil and opened its ports to the 'friendly nations' with Britain the chief beneficiary. Gilberto Freyre studies the 'gentle, velvet revolution' produced by a multitude of British manufactures, ideas and habits invading the country, from trams, gas lamps, railways, sewers and glass windows, to beer, hats, bread, butter, afternoon tea, the use of knives and forks and the habit of daily shaving. This pioneering piece of research takes the premise that eminent personages and great events only tell one side of the story, and that to see the influences of one culture on another demands a study of more shadowy characters and 'significant details'. Mechanics, firemen, engineers, sailors, traders and other 'Cinderellas of history' here reveal the less grandiose but more human aspects of cultural influence. Working along lines advocated decades later by historians like Carlo Ginzburg and Natalie Davis, Freyre makes the point that apparently minor, irrelevant facts of daily life in the home, in workshops, on the railways and in newspaper advertisements can be an excellent way to access a culture's past. The book is written in Freyre's extremely personal, unorthodox style vivid, sensuous yet colloquial -- which established him as one of the masters of twentieth-century Portuguese prose.

The two countries are deeply connected, given how most enslaved Africans, forcibly brought to Brazil during the era of the Atlantic slave trade, were from West Central Africa. Brazil imported the largest number of enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade and was the last country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery in 1888. Today, other than Nigeria, the largest population of African descent is in Brazil. Yet it was only in the last twenty years that Brazil's African heritage and its slave past have gained greater visibility. Prior to this, Brazil's African heritage and its slave past were completely neglected. This is the first book in English to focus on African heritage and public memory of slavery in Brazil and Angola. This interdisciplinary study examines visual images, dance, music, oral accounts, museum exhibitions, artifacts, monuments, festivals, and others forms of commemoration to illuminate the social and cultural dynamics that over the last twenty years have propelled--or prevented--the visibility of African heritage (and its Atlantic slave trade legacy) in the South Atlantic region. The book makes a very important contribution to the understanding of the place of African heritage and slavery in the official history and public memory of Brazil and Angola, topics that remain understudied. The study's focus on the South Atlantic world, a zone which is sparsely covered in the scholarly corpus on Atlantic history, will further research on other post-slave societies. The redemption explored in this book is multifaceted, including a desire to return home as part of a larger workforce in a sustainable economy, the desire to see the region's rich culture celebrated throughout Brazil, and to ensure that its traditional legacies are both preserved and further enriched through respectful innovation. The acute perceptiveness of forró musicians in portraying the diasporic experience of Northeastern Brazilians is elaborated in various chapters, including: one chapter focused on lyrical, musical, and collective representations or manifestations of diasporic nostalgia (saudade), another chapter analyzing the lyrico-musical representation of rural workers' alienation from - and resistance to - life in the urban centers, and a third chapter which contextualizes forró's descriptions of the experiences of Brazil's internal migrants, utilizing an array of testimonials and academic studies on the subject of interregional migration to reveal both the wisdom of forró lyricists and some of their blind spots. The study also includes a historical analysis of this Northeastern genre's transformation from a rhythm called baião that symbolically represented the Northeast as a simple, coherent entity, to forró, a more allegorical representation with a greater appreciation for the class, gender, racial, and generational complexity of the region. The development of the genre, as well as the circulation of theory related to cultural production and identity, are contextualized in a global economy.
