Industrial prosperity produced an astonishing proliferation of capitalists and industrialists positioned to garner a disproportionate share of the profits. These noveau riches erected magnificent mansions, creating aristocratic residential thoroughfares in cities like Chicago, Boston and Buffalo, of which Delaware Avenue was surely among the most magnificent. Classic Delaware Avenue ran two and a quarter miles, from Niagara Square to Chapin--now Gates--Circle. Four generations of inter-Avenue marriages created a closely knit, complicated cousinry. Encyclopedic in scope, Buffalo's Delaware Avenue: Mansions and Families is an immense book of facts that covers Buffalo's grandest Avenue and provides unique insight into the city's history. Originally published by Canisius College Press in 2003, this 2nd edition includes a robust, four-part Index that provides excellent access to the book's amazing contents, house by house, family by family. Discover the tales behind these mansions and their illustrious families.

DELAWARE VAN DYKE--DU PONT--JANVIER--LAMBSON-- STEWART CROSS Delaware Avenue from the Amstel House, New Castle, Delaware, is the David Stewart House, a quaint and charming old mansion built by Governor Van Dyke for his son, Senator Van Dyke, about the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is three stories in height and the front doorway is approached by a high flight of brownstone steps. Dr. David Stewart, the present owner and occupant, is the fifth of his name in New Castle and the fifth of his name to be a physician. The house is simple in exterior and is more attractive for its charm of aspect than for pretension of size or design. The rooms of the interior have lofty ceilings, are well lighted and have good proportions. Downstairs there is a quantity of fine wood-carving in a floral design, especially in the dining-room. A broad hall runs from the front door to the back of the house. Senator Van Dyke, for whom the mansion was built, was born in 1770 in his father's home, the Amstel House. He was educated in Philadelphia and studied law in the office of Chief Justice Kensey Johns. Though an attorney by profession he was a public man by avocation, and spoke for his state in the Halls of Congress for many years. He died in 1826 on the eve of reelection to the United States Senate. Contemporary records of him and traditions speak of him as a man of most delightful personality, known for the charm of his manner and his fine intellectual attainments. Upon the death of Senator Van Dyke, the home fell to the lot of his daughter, Dorcas, who married Charles Irence Du Pont. Dorcas' sister, Susannah, married Dr. David Stewart, the grandfather of the present occupant. From the family of Charles I. DuPont the mansion passed by...

Book excerpt: The feel-good underdog story of the first American swimmer to win Olympic gold, set against the turbulent rebirth of the modern Games, that “bring[s] to life an inspiring figure and illuminate[s] an overlooked chapter in America’s sports history” (The Wall Street Journal) “Once or twice in a decade, one of these stories . . . like Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken [or] Daniel Brown’s The Boys in the Boat . . . captures the imagination of the public. . . . Add The Watermen by Michael Loynd to this illustrious list.”—Swimming World Winner of the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Paragon Award and the Buck Dawson Authors Award In the early twentieth century, few Americans knew how to swim, and swimming as a competitive sport was almost unheard of. That is, until Charles Daniels took to the water. On the surface, young Charles had it all: high-society parents, a place at an exclusive New York City prep school, summer vacations in the Adirondacks. But the scrawny teenager suffered from extreme anxiety thanks to a sadistic father who mired the family in bankruptcy and scandal before abandoning Charles and his mother altogether. Charles’s only source of joy was swimming. But with no one to teach him, he struggled with technique—until he caught the eye of two immigrant coaches hell-bent on building a U.S. swim program that could rival the British Empire’s seventy-year domination of the sport. Interwoven with the story of Charles’s efforts to overcome his family’s disgrace is the compelling history of the struggle to establish the modern Olympics in an era when competitive sports were still in their infancy. When the powerful British Empire finally legitimized the Games by hosting the fourth Olympiad in 1908, Charles’s hard-fought rise climaxed in a gold-medal race where British judges prepared a trap to ensure the American upstart’s defeat. Set in the early days of a rapidly changing twentieth century, The Watermen—a term used at the time to describe men skilled in water sports—tells an engrossing story of grit, of the growth of a major new sport in which Americans would prevail, and of a young man’s determination to excel.
