Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers from these proceedings have been selected for their timeliness and relevance to the modern physics community. Topics covered include theory of high Tc superconductors and superconductivity in heavy Fermion systems, turbulence, spin glasses, fluctuations and phase transitions, and electron-electron correlations. The educational emphasis should be valuable to the advanced graduate student as well as to many practicing researchers. In July 1993 the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics hosted its first summer school for students of theoretical physics. The book is the result of this collaboration by many of Russia's top scientists to bring an extensive modern treatment of their work to an international audience of students and colleagues in the physical sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

Book excerpt: This book critically reexamines what turbulence really is, from a fundamental point of view and based on observations from nature, laboratories, and direct numerical simulations. It includes critical assessments and a comparative analysis of the key developments, their evolution and failures, along with key misconceptions and outdated paradigms. The main emphasis is on conceptual and problematic aspects, physical phenomena, observations, misconceptions and unresolved issues rather than on conventional formalistic aspects, models, etc. Apart from the obvious fundamental importance of turbulent flows, this emphasis stems from the basic premise that without corresponding progress in fundamental aspects there is little chance for progress in applications such as drag reduction, mixing, control and modeling of turbulence. More generally, there is also a desperate need to grasp the physical fundamentals of the technological processes in which turbulence plays a central role.

Book excerpt: For six years the Complex Systems Summer School has contributed greatly to education and research into complex systems. 1993 Lectures in Complex Systems presents a wide array of topics in the field, including condensed matter dynamics, self-organized criticality, complex fluids, evolution, time series analysis, and neural models of perception. This book is a compilation of many of the lectures and contributions of the 1993 Complex Systems Summer School. The collective volumes in the Series ( Lectures in the Sciences of Complexity, 1989 Lectures in the Sciences of Complexity, 1990 Lectures in Complex Systems, 1991 Lectures in Complex Systems, 1992 Lectures in Complex Systems and now 1993 Lectures in Complex Systems ) comprise a growing, broad, interdisciplinary review of the many sciences of complexity—a review unavailable elsewhere.Lectures included in This Volume:S.N. Book excerpt: Examines regional culture through the contributions of visual arts and includes a DVD Arising out of the Cleveland Artists Foundation's Dialogue Series, a 22-hour-long collection of forums held in cultural institutions and broadcast on National Public Radio, Creative Essence examines regional culture through an exploration of the distinguished contributions Cleveland has made to the visual arts and architecture. The Dialogue Series brought together a variety of people in the visual arts community to discuss the development of the region's creative life and environment, whether it be through architecture and city planning or through the industrial and fine arts. They shared their views and knowledge about how regionalism has long influenced artistic productivity. Their exchanges and ideas for the future are provocative and thoughtful. Richly illustrated with the work of well-known Cleveland-area artists and architects, past and present, Creative Essence explores the region's tradition, beginning with the "Cleveland School" of artists that was active and influential during the first half of the twentieth century. It moves on to examine the changes that occurred in the last half of the century and the development of the visual arts in northeast Ohio. Creative Essence is an important resource for understanding the significant role the visual arts play in our cities and societies and how they contribute to the region's quality of life. For those interested in regional history and for students of art history and the visual arts, this will be especially valuable.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: An analysis of the relations between Turkey, the West and the newly independent Turkic Republics, in the context of the "Turkish Model" proposed and supported by the West as a possible model for development in the Turkic Republics. It summarizes the Turkish Model of development as applied in Turkey, including its shortcomings, and discusses the role of Turkey in the area after the collapse of the Soviet Union, from the point of view of both the West and Turkey itself. It also analyzes the possible reasons why the Turkish Model was proposed and how the Turkic Republics received it, and why it declined from favour in a short period of time.

This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an expanded autobiography of the famous theoretical physicist Isaak Khalatnikov. He worked together with L.D. Landau at the Institute for Physical Problems lead by P.L. Kapitza. He is the co-author of L.D. Landau in a number of important works. They worked together in the frame of the so-called Nuclear Bomb Project. After the death of L.D. Landau, I.M. Khalatnikov initiated the establishment of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, named in honour of L.D. Landau, within the USSR Academy of Sciences. He headed this institute from the beginning as its Director. The institute inherited almost all traditions of the Landau scientific school and played a prominent role in the development of theoretical physics. So, this is a story about how the institute was created, how it worked, and about the life of the physicists in the "golden age" of the Soviet science. A separate chapter is devoted to today ́s life of the institute and the young generation of physicists working now in science. It is an historically interesting book on the development of Soviet and Russian science and presents the background of the Soviet nuclear bomb program in the cold war age. In war times, Khalatnikov was a chief of the military staff of nuclear research. He writes about the internal conditions of Soviet society, the way of operating of the Soviet authorities and ways for scientists to interact with them. It gives many interesting insights into the development of superconductivity and superfluidity. The book is written by the most experienced and best informed person among the few living Russian scientists in the environment of Landau. Many stories of the book were never published before and considered as "top secret".

Book excerpt: Describes topologically stable patterns such as vortices, disinclinations, dislocations, and domain walls in ordered media (superfluids, liquid and solid crystals, magnets). It also introduces the basic notions of homotopic group theory and the necessary algebraic topology constructions. The author is one of the inventors of topological classification of defects in a theory of ordered media and this classic paper provides an excellent reference text for postgraduates and researchers.
