This book was released on 1993-09-07 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the genome project, the necessary involvement of scientists of widely divergent backgrounds has been evident. The proper handling, analysis, dissemination of information, and the control and data gathering of automated process are areas where computers are directly involved. Thus computers are intimately tied into the production and analysis of biological data. However, many challenges lie ahead. This volume is a collection of selected oral and poster presentations given at The Second International Conference on Bioinformatics, Supercomputing and Complex Genome Analysis, organized to address some of these challenges. The topics include the current status and future prospects of genome map, mapping and sequencing, complex genome analysis, linguistic and neural network approaches, database issues, and computer tools in the genome project. The volume will be ideal for students, newcomers, young researchers and experts alike, who are computationally or experimentally oriented.Keynote Speakers: C L Smith, D Grothues, T Ito, T Sano, D Wang, Y-W Zhu, C R Canton & R J Rohins.

Book excerpt: Computer access is the only way to retrieve up-to-date sequences and this book shows researchers puzzled by the maze of URLs, sites, and searches how to use internet technology to find and analyze genetic data. The book describes the different types of databases, how to use a specific database to find a sequence that you need, and how to analyze the data to compare it with your own work. The content also covers sequence phenotype, mutation, and genetic linkage databases; simple repetitive DNA sequences; gene feature identification; and prediction of structure and function of proteins from sequence information. This book will be invaluable to those starting a career in life sciences research as well as to established researchers wishing to make full use of available resources. - Describes a wide range of databases: DNA, RNA, protein, pathways, and gene expression - Enables readers to access the information they need from databases on the web - Includes a directory of URLs for easy reference - Invaluable for those starting a career in life sciences research and also for established researchers wishing to make full use of available resources

Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking book, John Koza shows how this remarkable paradigm works and provides substantial empirical evidence that solutions to a great variety of problems from many different fields can be found by genetically breeding populations of computer programs. Genetic programming may be more powerful than neural networks and other machine learning techniques, able to solve problems in a wider range of disciplines. In this ground-breaking book, John Koza shows how this remarkable paradigm works and provides substantial empirical evidence that solutions to a great variety of problems from many different fields can be found by genetically breeding populations of computer programs. Genetic Programming contains a great many worked examples and includes a sample computer code that will allow readers to run their own programs. In getting computers to solve problems without being explicitly programmed, Koza stresses two points: that seemingly different problems from a variety of fields can be reformulated as problems of program induction, and that the recently developed genetic programming paradigm provides a way to search the space of possible computer programs for a highly fit individual computer program to solve the problems of program induction. Good programs are found by evolving them in a computer against a fitness measure instead of by sitting down and writing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of current topics in computational molecular biology. Computational molecular biology, or bioinformatics, draws on the disciplines of biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. It provides the computational support for functional genomics, which links the behavior of cells, organisms, and populations to the information encoded in the genomes, as well as for structural genomics. At the heart of all large-scale and high-throughput biotechnologies, it has a growing impact on health and medicine. This survey of computational molecular biology covers traditional topics such as protein structure modeling and sequence alignment, and more recent ones such as expression data analysis and comparative genomics. It combines algorithmic, statistical, database, and AI-based methods for studying biological problems. The book also contains an introductory chapter, as well as one on general statistical modeling and computational techniques in molecular biology. Each chapter presents a self-contained review of a specific subject. Not for sale in China, including Hong Kong.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Genome Project, an endeavor to map and sequence the entire human genome, has been in existence for almost seven years. One result of this effort has been the development of increasingly detailed genetic and physical maps spanning large regions of virtually every chromosome. Paralleling this has been the increasingly high resolution mapping of many &wnetic diseases. Together, these developments have facilitated the isolation of specific disease genes and are now motivating the construction of comprehensive transcriptional maps. This latter endeavor represents a new facet of the genome project, and as such requires the recognition and solution of a new set of problems, with the attendant development and application of a new set of techniques. The First International Workshop on the Identification of Transcribed Sequences in the Human Genome was held in 1991 and was attended by 23 investigators. Discussions at this meeting were largely devoted to defining the magnitude of the problem and describing the available techniques. A small number of laboratories reported the development of new techniques (at that time, for example, exon trapping, cDNA hybrid selection, direct cDNA screening, use of splice junction conserved sequences, etc.), but data were too limited to permit comparisons of their relative efficiencies.

The objective of the column from which the articles are taken is to present applications that have been successfully treated on advanced architecture computers. Astfalk edits this popular series of articles in SIAM's flagship publication, SIAM News. Algorithmic issues addressed are those which have found general use in building parallel codes for solving problems. In addition to updates that reflect advances and changes in the field of applications on advanced architecture computers, Astfalk has added an index and introductory comments to each article, making this book cohesive and interesting to practitioners and researchers alike.

Book excerpt: Computational chemistry is increasingly used in most areas of molecular science including organic, inorganic, medicinal, biological, physical, and analytical chemistry. Researchers in these fields who do molecular modelling need to understand and stay current with recent developments. This volume, like those prior to it, features chapters by experts in various fields of computational chemistry. Two chapters focus on molecular docking, one of which relates to drug discovery and cheminformatics and the other to proteomics. In addition, this volume contains tutorials on spin-orbit coupling and cellular automata modeling, as well as an extensive bibliography of computational chemistry books. FROM REVIEWS OF THE SERIES "Reviews in Computational Chemistry remains the most valuable reference to methods and techniques in computational chemistry."—JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR GRAPHICS AND MODELLING "One cannot generally do better than to try to find an appropriate article in the highly successful Reviews in Computational Chemistry. The basic philosophy of the editors seems to be to help the authors produce chapters that are complete, accurate, clear, and accessible to experimentalists (in particular) and other nonspecialists (in general)."—JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
