Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Protestant Landscapes by : Kimberly Pyszka
Download or read book The Archaeology of Protestant Landscapes written by Kimberly Pyszka and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a work of historical archaeology in the American South focusing on religious institutions-two churches and a college-as they existed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Recently, historical archaeologists are considering more work on churches, churchyards, and cemeteries. Traditionally, the dearth of artifacts was a primary deterrent. Kimberly Pyszka notes that archaeologists have an increasing awareness of how these sites contribute to questions of identity, consumerism, trade, and colonialism, especially when using a landscape archaeology lens. Pyszka aims to demonstrate that select religious institutions used and modified natural landscape features to express their ideology, identity, goals, and social, religious, and political power. Where those structures were constructed, how they sat on the landscape, their architectural style, and their overall visual appearance were well-considered decisions made by religious leaders to benefit their organizations, communities, and, sometimes, themselves. A secondary goal is to show the social roles that religious organizations played in the development of communities. Pyszka connects back to those landscape decisions, specifically to how the architectural design of religious structures was used, intentionally or not, to unite people, often those of differing religious backgrounds. This contributed to the creation of a new common identity among people living in new and still-growing settlements, aiding in community development. She also wants readers to reflect on today's religious landscapes and the ways they are still used to express religious, social, and political ideology and identity"--

Book Synopsis A History of Long Island, Vol. 3 by : Peter Ross
Download or read book A History of Long Island, Vol. 3 written by Peter Ross and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With these books an effort has been made to present the history of the whole of Long Island in such a way as to combine all the salient facts of the long and interesting story in a manner that might be acceptable to the general reader and at the same time include much of that purely antiquarian lore which is to many the most delightful feature of local history. Long Island has played a most important part in the history of the State of New York and, through New York, in the annals of the Nation. It was one of the first places in the Colonies to give formal utterance to the doctrine that taxation without representation is unjust and should not be borne by men claiming to be free-the doctrine that gradually went deep into the hearts and consciences of men and led to discussion, opposition and war; to the declaration of independence, the achievement of liberty and the founding of a new nation. It took an active part in all that glorious movement, the most significant movement in modern history, and though handicapped by the merciless occupation of the British troops after the disaster of August, 1776, it continued to do what it could to help along the cause to which so many of its citizens had devoted their fortunes, their lives. This is volume three out of three, covering the history of Nassau County, Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Suffolk County, Huntington and many towns more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Louis has been a shining beacon on the shores of the Mississippi River for more than 250 years, and many iconic landmarks have come and gone. The city hosted the World's Fair in 1904, with beautiful acres of buildings, gardens and fountains, nearly all of which are lost to time. Famous Busch Stadium now sits on an area that was once a vibrant community for Chinese immigrants. St. Louis Jockey Club was an expansive and popular gathering spot in the late nineteenth century until the state outlawed gambling. The Lion Gas Building was home to a unique mural featuring more than seventy shades of gray in tribute to famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. Author Valerie Battle Kienzle details the fantastic forgotten landmarks of St. Louis.
