Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dappled across a vast sky rests the Firmian Belt, a system of islands populated by two equine races- the Clyde and Pterippi. While the pastoral Clyde and the industrious Pterippi have existed mostly in harmony, this harmony has been shaken by the recent upsurge of a mysterious phenomenon known as skyquakes. With islands plummeting into the unknown depths below, the Firmian populace becomes desperate for a solution. For Calm, a disillusioned Clyde, these events are furthest from his mind, and yet he finds himself in a unique position to discover the truth. Along this path, he encounters Caps, a young Pterippus on the run from a dark secret. Despite their differences, the bond they form leaves them wondering if their meeting was by simple chance or fate. What then does this have to do with the story of Moonlight, a member of the Unicorn race long since believed extinct? Might her ancient tale shed light on the events of the present, and does it have anything to do with a shadowy figure blighting crops in their wake? As the adventure unfolds our heroes begin to uncover the truth about themselves and the Firmian Myth.

Book excerpt: Once considered the largest and most extensive source of biographies in the English language, The Universal Dictionary of Biography and Mythology contains information on nearly every historical figure, notable name, and important subject of mythology from throughout the world prior to the 20th century. Spanning all fields of human effort-from literature and the arts to philosophy and science-and touching on topics from multiple areas of mythological study, including Norse, Greek, and Roman, this extraordinary reference guide continues to be one of the most thorough and accurate collections of biographical data ever created. Combining mythological and biographical entries into a single, comprehensive list, and incorporating a unique system of indicating pronunciation and orthography, The Universal Dictionary of Biography and Mythology offers readers an unparalleled record of historically significant identities, from the obscure and forgotten newsmakers of yesteryear to the highly celebrated shapers of history that remain influential today. Volume I (A-CLU) of this exquisite four-volume set includes information on such names as John Quincy Adams, Achilles, sop, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra, as well as a detailed introduction to the entire body of this work. JOSEPH THOMAS (1811-1891) also wrote A Comprehensive Medical Dictionary, various pronouncing vocabularies of biographical and geographical names, and a system of pronunciation for Lippincott's Pronouncing Gazetteer of the World.
Book Synopsis Uncharted Constellations by : John C. Barentine
Download or read book Uncharted Constellations written by John C. Barentine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles an array of interesting constellations that fell by the wayside before the IAU established the modern canon of constellations. That decision left out lesser known ones whose history is nevertheless interesting, but at last author John Barentine is giving them their due. This book is a companion to "The Lost Constellations", highlighting the more obscure configurations. The 16 constellations found in this volume fall into one or more of three broad categories: asterims, such as the Big Dipper in Ursa Major; single-sourced constellations introduced on surviving charts by a cartographer perhaps currying the favor of sponsors; and re-brands, new figures meant to displace existing constellations, often for an ideological reason. All of them reveal something unique about the development of humanity's map of the sky.

Book Synopsis The Cinematic Novel and Postmodern Pop Fiction by : Décio Torres Cruz
Download or read book The Cinematic Novel and Postmodern Pop Fiction written by Décio Torres Cruz and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Décio Torres Cruz approaches connections between literature and cinema partly through issues of gender and identity, and partly through issues of reality and representation. In doing so, he looks at the various ways in which people have thought of the so-called cinematic novel, tracing the development of that genre concept not only in the French ciné-roman and film scenarios but also in novels from the United States, England, France, and Latin America. The main tendency he identifies is the blending of the cinematic novel with pop literature, through allusions to Pop Art and other postmodern cultural trends. His prime exhibits are a number of novels by the Argentinian writer Manuel Puig: Betrayed by Rita Hayworth; Heartbreak Tango; The Buenos Aires Affair; Kiss of the Spider Woman; and Pubis angelical. Bringing in suggestive sociocultural and psychoanalytical considerations, Cruz shows how, in Puig’s hands, the cinematic novel resulted in a pop collage of different texts, films, discourses, and narrative devices which fused reality and imagination into dream and desire.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763-1825) combined the idealism of Fichte with the sentimentality of the Sturm und Drang movement. In this study the relation between Jean Paul and 18th-century philosophy is described as dialogical in the sense that the author's statements concerning aesthetics, ethics, and religion take the form of appeals and responses to other philosophical texts. Three of his novels, Unsichtbare Loge, Hesperus, and Titan, are involved not only with the representation of quasi-fictive worlds, but also with the ironic reinscription of philosophemes from such sources as Herder, Jacobi, Platner, and Fichte. This inquiry into Jean Paul's «Seelen-Mythologie» and its problematic depiction of symbolic individuals takes into account the theory of the sublime and the «beautiful soul» which emerged during the enlightenment.

Book Synopsis Gothic Imagination in Latin American Fiction and Film by : Carmen A. Serrano
Download or read book Gothic Imagination in Latin American Fiction and Film written by Carmen A. Serrano and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work traces how Gothic imagination from the literature and culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe and twentieth-century US and European film has impacted Latin American literature and film culture. Serrano argues that the Gothic has provided Latin American authors with a way to critique a number of issues, including colonization, authoritarianism, feudalism, and patriarchy. The book includes a literary history of the European Gothic to demonstrate how Latin American authors have incorporated its characteristics but also how they have broken away or inverted some elements, such as traditional plot lines, to suit their work and address a unique set of issues. The book examines both the modernistas of the nineteenth century and the avant-garde writers of the twentieth century, including Huidobro, Bombal, Rulfo, Roa Bastos, and Fuentes. Looking at the Gothic in Latin American literature and film, this book is a groundbreaking study that brings a fresh perspective to Latin American creative culture.
