Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. This text provides a survey of the peoples who speak Finno-Ugric languages and have titular republics or autonomous regions within the post-Soviet Russian federation. Their languages have set them apart from their Turkic and Russian neighbours and helped to preserve their distinct identity, including their animist religious practices. Previous works on this subject were written before the demise of the USSR so that information on the subject was screened by Soviet censors. In particular, this book explores the principal threats now facing these peoples - as much environmental as political. Although communism has gone, the exploitation of natural resources threatens the region's ecology, while the new rulers in the Kremlin seem set to continue their predecessors' oppressive policies towards the Finno-Ugrians. The book is written with commitment to the threatened human and political rights of these endangered peoples.

Book Synopsis Null Subjects in Slavic and Finno-Ugric by : Gréte Dalmi
Download or read book Null Subjects in Slavic and Finno-Ugric written by Gréte Dalmi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though null subjects have been extensively studied in the past four decades, there is a growing interest in partial null subject languages (e.g. Finnish) and a subtler classification of null subject phenomena overall. This volume aims at contributing to this trend, focusing on Slavic and Finno-Ugric groups, with some extension to Baltic and Samoyedic languages. Interestingly, these groups offer an impressive array of macro- and microvariation. Moreover, given an increasing interest towards the internal structure of the pronominal elements and the role of various types of topics in the left periphery of the sentence structure, the enterprise taken up in this book is to investigate lexical and null, referential and generic subjects in order to understand and compare their feature composition, licensing conditions, and structural properties. Rather than trying to squeeze the studied languages into a predefined set of parameters, this volume highlights some properties that may lead to a refinement of the existing generalizations. It brings together contributors from both generative and typological traditions and will be of interest to any researcher willing to investigate argument-drop in a wider crosslinguistic perspective.

Book excerpt: This historical book reveals the secrets of the past, casting light on the dark corners of the relationship between Ukraine and Russia. It unfolds a large-scale picture of an age-old relationship, shedding light on the tragic events and indescribable feats of both nations. As we travel through time, we will discover that the history of these two peoples is intertwined with threads of complex events dating back to ancient times. Each page of the book reveals not only the fascinating drama of historical vicissitudes, but also pronounced features of national character that shape the fate of peoples. This deep dive into the past opens eyes to the true causes of much of Ukraine's suffering, revealing complex knots of political and cultural influences from Russia. But at the same time, it offers a new perspective on the relationship between these peoples, calling for understanding and healing of historical wounds. This historical book is a ruthless expose of Russia as the root of all Ukraine's ills. I will tear the covers off the centuries-old lies and manipulations of the Kremlin. I will prove that every historical tragedy in Ukraine has roots in Russian influence. From ancient times to modern times, we will look at the shocking truth hidden from us and see the real face of Russia as the main aggressor and oppressor of Ukraine. This is a guide to the true history of the two peoples, which will convince you to rethink the shared history of these countries.
