Book Synopsis Five-Finger Discount by : Helene Stapinski
Download or read book Five-Finger Discount written by Helene Stapinski and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a PBS documentary, this astonishing memoir of growing up in rough-and-tumble Jersey City “will steal your heart” (People) With deadpan humor and obvious affection, Five-Finger Discount recounts the story of an unforgettable New Jersey family of swindlers, bookies, embezzlers, and mobster-wannabes. In the memoir Mary Karr calls “a page-turner,” Helene Stapinski ingeniously weaves the checkered history of her hometown of Jersey City—a place known for its political corruption and industrial blight—with the tales that have swirled around her relatives for decades. Navigating a childhood of toxic waste and tough love, Stapinski tells an extraordinary tale at once heartbreaking and hysterically funny. Praise for Five-Finger Discount “By turns hilarious and alarming, [Helene Stapinski’s] book reads on the surface like something by Damon Runyon and Elmore Leonard, with a dark undertow of real-life pain and disillusion.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “It’s a brilliant book, a darling book. It is the blessedly modest chronicle of a magical consciousness that seems to have been born pulling diamonds out of the muck, hearing angels’ voices in the fiercest thunder. . . . I adored every word of this wondrous book. Get it. Read it.”—Michael Pakenham, The Baltimore Sun “In the tradition of . . . Rita Mae Brown and Amy Tan, Ms. Stapinski is an exciting writer, unabashedly candid, and at the same time unashamedly self-contained. Five-Finger Discount is a must-read.”—Victoria Gotti, The New York Observer “What [Frank] McCourt did for Limerick, Ireland, Helene Stapinski does for Jersey City.”—The Star-Ledger “Hugely entertaining.”—The Sunday Times (London)

Book Synopsis Nothin's On The Square by : Mike Houlihan
Download or read book Nothin's On The Square written by Mike Houlihan and published by Abbeyfeale Press Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago is the political corruption capital of the world. To discover the future for many cities facing similar epidemics of corruption read on.
Former Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mike Houlihan takes us on a rollicking ride into the underbelly of Chicago politics, with a sneak peek behind the scenes of a mayoral campaign to unseat Rahm Emanuel.
No rules apply here, “nothin’s on the square”, and the game is rigged from the get-go. Join “Houli” as he signs on as campaign advisor and takes you with him through the windy city in a battle for the soul of Chicagoland, a thrill ride for political junkies that takes you from lonely empty candidate forums to barnstorming corned beef and cabbage bashes to the pinnacle of Chicago politics.
Houlihan peels off the days of the calendar with daily body counts from the blood soaked streets of the ghetto and puts you in the smoke filled rooms with the back stabbing blowhards, fakers and Friars gobbling at the trough to get their piece of the pie, personifying the old Chicago motto of “Ubi Est Mea”, where is mine?
Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune says, “Houlihan minces no words here…this is a unique and essential Chicago book.”
This is also essential reading for anyone interested in the rotten core of big city politics or who has aspirations of changing anything in America.

Download or read book Memories of My Town written by Åström Anna-Maria and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume Memories of my Town is an exploration into how town dwellers experience their environment in a complicated way .As people in urban milieus relate themselves to the environment, this takes place on many levels, where especially the time level becomes problematic. The urban buildings and settings can be looked upon as a kind of collective history, as carriers or witnesses of times past. But it is only the town dwellers that experience urban time itself, the time they live in, but through their memories also times past. In this past some elements take symbolicaly dense expressions. Through reliving and narrating their experiences the symbolically important factors in the this urban relationship will be outlined for investigations conserning three towns, Helsinki, the capital, Viborg, the ceded and lost Carelian town, and Jyväskylä, a town with dense commercial and civilisatory dimensions in the middle of Finland. The symbolic aspects are the kern in all the articles of the book Memories of my Town. The aim of the book and its articles has been to use different theoretical concepts as guidelines in analysing the different narrative texts. Thus the articles are to be seen as independent contributions to the scientific discussion about places, urbanism, memories and narratives. The ethnological outlook is on the other hand an outcome of the joint project Town Dwellers and their Places., whereby the articles substancially relate to one another. Thus the book can also be seen as a joint result of this urban project, which was sponsored by the Finnish Academy.
