We examine the properties of the accounting equation as the principal algorithm for the design and the development of a System Dynamics model. Key to the perspective is the foundational requirement that resolves the temporal conflict that resides in a stock and flow model. Through formal analysis the accounting equation is redefined as a cybernetic model by expressing the temporal and dynamic properties of its terms. Articulated in that form the accounting equation is enabled to be defined as a dynamic stock and flow model expressing the two dimensions of the double-entry accounting system. With that formal foundation it is argued that the accounting model is capable to simulate financial dynamics as well as be integrated with models that express operational and world dynamics. Thus we prove that it is possible to design and build a dynamic business model that can meet requirements of management accounting (ex ante, before the fact) as well as financial accounting (ex post, after the fact). We conclude that the dynamic accounting model can be made relevant for strategic planning and control purposes and be integrated within a System Dynamics model designed for such purposes.

Book excerpt: In this paper the main idea is to create a flexible Budgeting Model which works in a dynamic framework capable of providing information about the financial position, income, assets and liabilities of an enterprise. This new tool should be considered the starting point for a new class of models able to adapt to the new informative requirements that come from different economic subjects. In order to create a similar model one has to analyze the procedures of double entry bookkeeping and find a mathematical formalization of them. Then, using the typical relationships presented in the balance sheet, it will be possible to build an initial quantitative model which uses accounting data to represent the dynamics of the company and to create a simulation associated with those dynamics.In succession we are showing how our accounting recordings formalization, based on the concept of difference equations, can be used to model the entire dynamic of the Budgeting Model and more in general the dynamic of a Balance Sheet. Afterwards a closed form solution will be proposed. This solution gives us information about the financial position, income, assets and liabilities of an enterprise after n-periods and it could be used both to simulate firm budget and for other financial purposes. However, this research wants also to introduce a new series of quantitative instruments to integrate the set of information at the disposal of companies, obtained, to begin with, from its accounting records.

Yet important human resource decisions involving hiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters are often made in the absence of specific information about the different costs and benefits of these particular choices. Human resource accounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuable information by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensating and training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee training programs, increase productivity, and improve managerial decision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacement and turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example: How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claims adjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every one dollar spent. How a human resources accounting study revealed that an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled one year's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduce turnovers.
