Book Synopsis A Social History of Germany, 1648-1914 by : Eda Sagarra

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a pioneering effort to examine the social, demographic, and economic changes that befell the Jewish communities of Central Europe after the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire. It consists of studies researched and written especially for this volume by historians, sociologists, and economists, all specialists in modern Central European Jewish affairs. The era of national rivalry, economic crises, and political confusion between the two World Wars has been preceded by a pre-World War I epoch of Jewish emancipation and assimilation. During that period, Jewish minorities had been harbored from violent anti-Semitism by the Empire, and they became torchbearers of industrialization and modernization. This common destiny encouraged certain common characteristics in the three major components of the Empire, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech territories, despite the very different origins of the well over one million Jews in those three lands. The disintegration of the Habsburg Empire created three small, economically marginal national states, inimical to each other and at liberty to create their own policies toward Jews in accord with the preferences of their respective ruling classes. Active and openly discriminatory anti-Semitic measures resulted in Austria and Hungary. The only liberal heir country of the Empire was Czechoslovakia, although simmering anti-Semitism and below surface discrimination were widespread in Slovakia. While one might have expected Jewish communities to return to their pre-World War I tendencies to go their independent ways after the introduction of these policies, social and economic patterns which had evolved in the Habsburg era persisted until the Anschluss in Austria, German occupation in Czechoslovakia, and World War II in Hungary. Studies in this volume attest to continuing similarities among the three Jewish communities, testifying to the depth of the Empire's long lasting impact on the behavior of Jews in Central Euro

Book Synopsis Hollywood in Berlin by : Thomas J. Saunders
Download or read book Hollywood in Berlin written by Thomas J. Saunders and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The setting is 1920s Berlin, cultural heart of Europe and the era's only serious cinematic rival to Hollywood. In his engaging study, Thomas Saunders explores an outstanding example of one of the most important cultural developments of this century: global Americanization through the motion picture. The invasion of Germany by American films, which began in 1921 with overlapping waves of sensationalist serials, slapstick shorts, society pictures, and historical epics, initiated a decade of cultural collision and accommodation. On the one hand it fueled an impassioned debate about the properties of cinema and the specter of wholesale Americanization. On the other hand it spawned unprecedented levels of cooperation and exchange. In Berlin, American motion pictures not only entertained all social classes and film tastes but also served as a vehicle for American values and a source of sharp economic competition. Hollywood in Berlin correlates the changing forms of Hollywood's contributions to Weimar culture and the discourses that framed and interpreted them, restoring historical contours to a leading aspect of cultural interchange in this century. At the same time, the book successfully embeds Weimar cinema in its contemporary international setting.

VI E was now stumbling on blindly through the darkness, because there was nothing left him to do, if he would still have word of his mother, than to seek the castle of which the fisherman had spoken. A bitter and a fearsome night it was that he had to live through. He was astounded how it could come to pass that a man such as he could go under in such perplexity of distress. When, the thick darkness made it, ever and anon, impossible for him to press on, he more times than once swung from the terror of despair to fits of Berserker wrath that spent themselves with bleeding fists against stones and tree trunks. He did not, be sure, cease to shout Heartache's name over and over again into the rustling wilderness of the woods, whence, ever and again, a mournful echo gave him answer, an echo that only made his helplessness, his fears, his longing, and in the end, his rage, the greater. He seemed, in his own eyes, as one befooled, as one tricked. They had tricked him of the most precious thing the world had held for him, but where to look for the trickster, for the cheat, he could not tell. He went so far as to challenge the air, the night, the trees, the rocks, the waters, and the earth, to give him back bis mother on pain of his everlasting enmity. Toward morning, Parsival became aware that he was wending his way up stream on the banks of a somewhat broad river. The grey dawn, heralding the sun, disclosed a deep valley that, steep and rocky, widened out or narrowed in on either shore of the river bed. The farther he fared the more foreign the landscape became, and had he not been stricken to the soul, he would, at the last, have believed himself in Paradise. Strange plants, strange flowers, trees and grasses encompassed him round about....

This book was released on 1984 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For public consumption Gerhart Hauptmann was Germany's greatest naturalist writer. Another, private existence is however revealed in and by the religious studies he undertook from ca. 1885 to 1945. His quest for that which underlies man's diverse perspectives of the supernatural and binds them into a whole leads him to study Christianity, eastern religions, the writings of Jacob Boehme, etc. Material from Hauptmann's notebooks, diaries, marginalia from his personal library, and a careful examination of the texts he actually read, show the effects of this preoccupation on his thinking and works, as well as explains his intense interest in German mysticism and the philosophies of the East.
