Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confused about fiber? You're not alone. Not all fiber is created equal. Roughage is insoluble fiber — often "scratchy" in texture. Many people with IBS or IBD have been told to increase their intake of soluble fiber: the soothing substance that turns into a gel and helps to calm an irritated digestive system. However, it's often difficult to find fiber information for the foods you consume every day. No more guessing. This book contains more than 450 entries in several charts — useful for anyone with bowel problems like diarrhea/constipation, or for health-conscious individuals interested in increasing their daily fiber consumption. Take control of your life. Get the fiber information you need to help control that angry bowel. Additional chapters include: • How Much Fiber Do You Need? • Foods High in Soluble Fiber • Foods High in Insoluble Fiber • How Does Soluble Fiber Help IBS and IBD? • Internet Resources

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic, Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences are identification sciences dealing with criminal and delicate societal problems for which scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-rays (EDAX) and analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are providing increasingly definitive solutions. This is particularly true in the area of particulates. However, electron microscopists working independently in these three related fields are often called upon to identify particulates which have been well characterized by microscopists in one of the other fields of study. Exchange of information on particulate identification and techniques for analyzing new unusual samples has been difficult between the three disciplines. For example, automated search and identification of particulates has become a standard procedure in environmental and occupational health. The procedure, however, has yet to find its way into forensic laboratories for analysis of gunshot residue particles. This volume represents a beginning for collaboration and exchange of ideas between such areas of study with diverse interests but similar analytical problems. It is virtually certain that this effort will also interest other electron microscopists in some novel scientific problems with criminal and societal relevance. The volume presents full-length articles of several invited speakers and participants at the "Forensic, Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences" Symposium held as a part of the EMSA-MAS Joint Annual Meeting, 5-9 August 1985, Louisville, Kentucky. Extended 2-4 page abstracts of these presentations have been published in the EMSA Proceedings (1985).

Book excerpt: Dietary Fiber for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: Fiber's Interaction between Gut Micoflora, Sugar Metabolism, Weight Control and Cardiovascular Health compiles the most up-to-date research discoveries to provide a timely and scientific rationale for the significant impact of a fiber rich diet for the prevention of heart disease. By focusing on the science behind how fiber, both soluble and insoluble can lead to lower rates of heart disease, this important reference will educate researchers, cardiologists, medical providers and students on how to improve patients' hearts via a fiber rich diet. Coverage includes the known mechanisms of how fiber works to reduce insulin resistance, control weight, reduce cholesterol by binding with bile, maintain stable glucose levels and influence gut microflora. - Explains how fiber affects cardiovascular disease through the influence on insulin resistance, reduction of cholesterol, change in gut microflora and in weight control - Provides thorough coverage of the effect of fiber on arrhythmias and valvular abnormalities - Includes information on the indirect relationship between constipation and heart disease
