Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feudal Age The Pasadena course in "Ancient History" includes not only the conventional course to 800 A. D., but a continuation of that course to the close of the Crusades. This little book has been written to cover important phases of the period from Charlemagne to 1270. It does not include all of the material which was prepared originally on the Feudal Age, since the discussion of the rise of the nations and the study of civilization in the later Feudal Age has been postponed until the second year, being considered in the course in modern European history. There has been no attempt to cover carefully the events of these five centuries. The book is less a narrative than a description of life and of general changes, with some account of the great personages of the period. The author hopes that the book is sufficiently long to show that the Feudal Age was essentially different from any other in history; he cannot expect that it will make clear to the student that medieval spirit which animated society during the Feudal Age. The author's thanks are due to many for help and suggestions. Among these are Professor Jacob N. Bowman of the University of Washington, Professor James T. Shotwell of Columbia University, and the author's colleagues, especially Miss Leonora Schopbach and Miss Katherine J. Kenaga and Mr. W. R. Morris. None of these is responsible for errors or for the partial and misleading statements which are inevitable in so brief an account. The author will be glad to receive criticisms from teachers who use the pamphlet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Middle Ages This translation is published in the confident belief that it will prove as valuable a book for school use and general reading among us as it has proved itself in France. Care has been taken to distinguish the editor's work from the author's, in both text and notes. Some few omissions have been made from the author's text without notice, chiefly for the purpose of simplifying the narrative, and corrections of dates and of manifest typographical errors have not been marked, but in every case where the author's meaning has been changed the fact is indicated by the use of brackets, and the editor's notes are signed, while theauthor's are left unsigned. In general, the intention has been to confine changes and notes to points of sufficient importance to justify notice, but in a book of this kind it is hardly possible that every statement in need of revision has been detected, and I am conscious to myself of unequal knowledge of the different subjects dealt with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feudal Regime This account of the feudal regime forms the first chapter in the second volume of the Histoire Generale du IV Siecle a nos Jours, edited by MM. Lavisse and Rambaud. It is now done into English, with the idea that as a short description of the social organization prevailing in Europe from the tenth to the thirteenth century it may approve itself as widely among us as it has in France. It is hoped not only that it may be useful as collateral reading for classes in history, for which it seems peculiarly fitted, but also that it may be of interest to general readers. If it meets with sufficient favor, it is purposed to issue similar monographs on other subjects. Now and then, a note of no special importance has been dropped; a passage has been rendered rather freely; or an explanation, enclosed in brackets, has been added by the editor. Often, also, the paragraphing has been modified, out of respect for English usage. Otherwise, however, the original is unchanged in the translation. The editor is deeply indebted to Mr. Christian Gauss, of Lehigh University, for extensive aid in the translating, and also to his colleague, Mr. Victor Francois. He relieves them, though, of all responsibility for errors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. While endeavoring to subordinate mere facts and dates, I have intended to introduce those with which a pupil should be familiar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early and Middle Ages of England In the present volume I have tried to give the last results of enquiry into the early history of England. Perhaps no period has been more profoundly studied, or less generally understood. The true explanation of this apparent anomaly is, I believe, that the great works of Sir F. Palgrave, Mr. Kemble, and their followers, have suffered in popular estimation from the elaborate treatment and profuse illustration which make their writings invaluable to scholars. I have condensed the history of twelve hundred years into a single volume, with a view to the large class who want time or inclination to pursue English history as an exclusive study. I think, too, that the labours of antiquarians, essayists, and philologists require from time to time to be reduced to order, for the mere purpose of comparison. An imperfect, even a false, theory of the connection and interdependence of events, is better than none at all. Without regard to the powers of arrangement, and vivid narrative style that make M. Thierry's "Conquest of England" a work of genius, I am sure the theory of races which it developes, however unsound it may be in its principles and application, has had results of the last importance in stimulating enquiry.
