Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fertilisation of Flowers In this edition I have incorporated a large mass of Dr. Hermann Muller's recent observations, of which he sent me full notes; and I have also added further details where it seemed necessary, taken from his own and other writings. Many new figures from Dr. Hermann Muller's other works have also been inserted here. The systematic part of the book, which is arranged on Endlicher's system in the German edition, has been re-arranged according to Bentham and Hooker's Genera Plantarum. I may mention one case out of many in which I have had difficulty in choosing between equivalent words. I have throughout used fertilisation in preference to the ungainly word pollination, to imply application of pollen to the stigma without definite reference to the result of the act: that is to say, I have in ordinary cases translated Bestaubung and Befruchtung by the same word. But I have taken pains to guard against ambiguity in all cases where this rendering might lead to it. Mr. T. H. Corry, of Caius College, Assistant-Curator of the University Herbarium, has read through the whole systematic part, giving me constant assistance. I have been at pains to compile a list of all works relating to the subject of this book; and so far as lay in my power I have added an Index of genera to the list. Charles Darwin's preface, full of suggestion, full of kindly appreciative feeling, is of peculiar interest as one of the very last of his writings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a wider approach not strictly focused on crop production compared to other books that are strictly oriented towards bees, but has a generalist approach to pollination biology. It also highlights relationships between introduced and wild pollinators and consequences of such introductions on communities of wild pollinating insects. The chapters on biochemical basis of plant-pollination interaction, pollination energetics, climate change and pollinators and pollinators as bioindicators of ecosystem functioning provide a base for future insights into pollination biology. The role of honeybees and wild bees on crop pollination, value of bee pollination, planned honeybee pollination, non-bee pollinators, safety of pollinators, pollination in cages, pollination for hybrid seed production, the problem of diseases, genetically modified plants and bees, the role of bees in improving food security and livelihoods, capacity building and awareness for pollinators are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnological methods are opening new ways in plant breeding. They allow novel strategies for improving crop productivity and quality, especially in the agrofood sector. The molecular mechanisms underlying these biotechnological approaches are presented here. Topics included are: pollen development, pollen tube growth, macrosporogenesis and fertilization and the effects of pesticides on sexual plant reproduction. Fertilization in higher plants is a complex process consisting of two events, the fusion of the egg with one sperm cell resulting in the diploid zygote, and the fusion of embryosac nuclei with another sperm cell, leading to a triploid endosperm. This "double fertilization" is preceded by the pollination process and a long lasting interaction between the dipoid pistil and the haploid pollen tube (progamic phase). Fertilization of flowering plants results in the formation of seeds and fruits, our basic food supply.

Book excerpt: The latest addition to the distinguished series The New Naturalist, this much needed work, jointly authored by two eminent British scientists, seeks to provide students and professional botanists with a modern, comprehensive study of flower pollination. Although isolated sections are devoted to specifically British subjects, taken as a whole the study is of universal interest. Included are chapters on Pollination in Some Exotic Plants, Pollination in Plant Breeding and Commerce and The Evolution and Ecology of Pollination, which contains frequent references to research undertaken by scientists in this country. Illustrated with superbly detailed drawings and photographs, many in full color, this is a landmark book in its field which academic and botanical libraries will require for their collections.
