Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns of Great Britain, and Their Allies the Club-Mosses, Pepperworts, and Horsetails A popular description of a fern might be, A large leaf or branch of leaves, bearing no flowers. Yet that leaf-like spray differs from a leaf in several particulars of structure; the most marked of which is, that it repre sents the leaf and fruit conjoined, bearing its fructifi cation, in most cases, on its under surface. The word fmnd, therefore, applied to the green expansion of a fern, though it originated in the idea that the leaf of a fern was composed of a branch and a leaf, is not alto gether an unnecessary distinction. The frond consists of two parts; the leafy portion and the stalk. The stalk is often called the rachis, but, strictly speaking, it is composed of two parts. That part which bears the green leaf is the rachis; and the lower portion of the stalk, destitute of the green expansion, is the stapes. When the frond is so divided, that, besides the principal stalk, another set of stalks runs through the green di visions, each of these last is a secondary mchie; the term primary mchz's referring to the main stalk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early misfortunes of Eve, condemning her descendants to a dubious reputation for fruit management, to the acclaimed successes of plant breeders such as the eccentric Ellen Willmott who combined bankruptcy with iris breeding, the fortunes of the female gardener have been as varied as their roles. Telling the tales of the sixteenth-century housewife, who neatly sidestepped accusations of herbal witchcraft while working her plot, and the unconventional Ladies of Llangollen, who eloped together and created their gothic garden and many other women besides, A History of Women in the Garden showcases female horticulturists through the centuries. An enlightening and entertaining read that will allow the reader to gain fresh enthusiasm for even the most menial of garden tasks, and realise that hundreds of women have trod the garden path before.

Book excerpt: This volume includes sources relating to a range of social and cultural contexts, including the proliferation of natural history crazes (ferns, aquaria, orchids, etc); debates about the social and environmental impacts of changing land use in town and country; debates about demographics, population, and resources inspired by Thomas Malthus; attempts to preserve landscapes (e.g., The Commons Preservation Society), debates about hunger, poverty, and disease in the countryside, particularly during the ‘Hungry Forties’, and relating to the Captain Swing and Chartist disturbances; the rise of land Utopianism and rural Utopian community projects; the rise of new forms of rural leisure; aesthetic engagements with rural enviroments and new world travel; and debates about pollution (especially water pollution). The volume will also turn to a range of literary sources from the period prior to 1858 to illustrate the ways in which changing attitudes to environments emerged in fiction. These include extracts from Dickens’s early works, the hunting novels of R. S. Surtees, the social novels of Harriet Martineau, Charlotte Tonna, Charles Kingsley and Margaret Oliphant, John Ruskin’s environmental fairytale, ‘The King of the Golden River’, chartist fiction, Victorian children’s fiction, and adventure novels.
