Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is the first female athlete you admired? Were male and female athletes treated differently in your high school? Is there a natural limit to women's athletic ability? How has Title IX opened up opportunities for women athletes? Every semester since 1996, Bonnie Morris has encouraged students to confront questions like these in one of the most provocative college courses in America: Athletics and Gender, A History of Women's Sports. What's the Score?, Morris's energetic teaching memoir, is a peek inside that class and features a decades-long dialogue with student athletes about the greater opportunities for women—on the playing field, as coaches, and in sports media. From corsets to segregated schoolyards to the WNBA, we find women athletes the world over conquering unique barriers to success. What's the Score? is not only an insider's look at sports education but also an engaging guide to turning points in women's sports history that everyone should know.

Book excerpt: A gold medal Olympian, Babe Didrikson was arguably the greatest athlete of the twentieth century, excelling at every sport she tried: running, jumping, javelin throwing, swimming, basketball, golf, and baseball, to name just a few. Gifted and controversial, the Babe's athletic prowess and personality took the country by storm from the 1930s to the 1950s. Following the U.S. Women's soccer team's victory in 1999, Babe was mentioned repeatedly as a sports icon for female athletes everywhere. Her achievements, though vast, were cut short at age forty-three when she died from cancer, but Babe set the bar for every female athlete in her wake and opened the world's eyes to what one empowered woman can achieve! The Babe's biography will inspire young adult readers--embracing the current surge of Girlpower--who resonate with her quest for the American Dream, her efforts to compete in a male world, her battle to overcome discrimination against female athletes, and her struggle with identity. Author Susan Cayleff, whose adult biography of Babe Didrikson was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, now brings Babe's rousing true-life story to young women, for whom she stands as a powerful role model.

Book excerpt: The Strong Female Athlete is an evidence-based and experience-based text with a fresh, novel approach for youth female athletes to improve speed, reduce injury, and increase strength. In this exuberant body of work, Erica Suter gives a deep understanding of female athlete growth and maturation, anatomy and physiology, nutritional needs, menstrual cycle considerations, and performance training progressions. She presents the science, but in a way that is readable and fun for coaches, parents, and young girls. This is way easier to read than a scientific study! The final chapters discuss mental training and how female athletes can improve confidence, and overcome challenges from sports and life.

Book excerpt: Annotation The sculpted speed of Marion Jones. The grit and agility of Mia Hamm. The slam-dunk style of Lisa Leslie. The skill and finesse of these sports figures are widely admired, no longer causing the puzzlement and discomfort directed toward earlier generations of athletic women. Built to Win explores this relatively recent phenomenon--the confident, empowered female athletes found everywhere in American popular culture. Leslie Heywood and Shari L., Dworkin examine the role of female athletes through interviews with elementary- and high school-age girls and boys; careful readings of ad campaigns by Nike, Reebok, and others; discussions of movies like Fight Club and Girlfight; and explorations of their own sports experiences. They ask: what, if any, dissonance is there between popular images and the actual experiences of these athletes? Do these images really "redefine femininity" and contribute to a greater inclusion of all women in sport? Are sexualized images of these women damaging their quest to betaken seriously? Do they inspire young boys to respect and admire female athletes, and will this ultimately make a difference in the ways gender and power are constructed and perceived? Proposing a paradigm shift from second- to third-wave feminism, Heywood and Dworkin argue that, in the years since the passage of Title IX, gender stereotypes have been destabilized in profound ways, and they assert that female athletes and their imagery are doing important cultural work to that end. Important, refreshing, and engrossing, Built to Win examines sport in all its complexity.

Book excerpt: Although there are several educational benefits resulting from participation in high school sports, African American students do not always experience the positive outcomes that other populations share. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to investigate the effect of athletic participation on the academic achievement of African American high school female students. The sample consisted of 100 female African American 12th-grade students. Descriptive statistics were collected and analyzed. Analysis involved archival data to determine the grade point averages and graduation rates of student athletes and non-athletes in two urban high schools in Georgia. The study sought to determine if there was a statistically significant disparity between the grade point averages and graduation rates of student athletes and non-athletes and between single sport athletes and multiple sport athletes. Results indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in the grade point averages and graduation rate of student athletes and non-athletes. They also indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in the grade point averages and graduation rate of student athletes who participate in a single sport and those that participate in multiple sports. Findings suggest that participation in athletics should continue to be an area of focus for educational stakeholders as it relates to academic achievement. Recommendations for future research are provided.
