Book Synopsis A Mechanistic Approach to Plankton Ecology by : Thomas Kiørboe
Download or read book A Mechanistic Approach to Plankton Ecology written by Thomas Kiørboe and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three main missions of any organism--growing, reproducing, and surviving--depend on encounters with food and mates, and on avoiding encounters with predators. Through natural selection, the behavior and ecology of plankton organisms have evolved to optimize these tasks. This book offers a mechanistic approach to the study of ocean ecology by exploring biological interactions in plankton at the individual level. The book focuses on encounter mechanisms, since the pace of life in the ocean intimately relates to the rate at which encounters happen. Thomas Kiørboe examines the life and interactions of plankton organisms with the larger aim of understanding marine pelagic food webs. He looks at plankton ecology and behavior in the context of the organisms' immediate physical and chemical habitats. He shows that the nutrient uptake, feeding rates, motility patterns, signal transmissions, and perception of plankton are all constrained by nonintuitive interactions between organism biology and small-scale physical and chemical characteristics of the three-dimensional fluid environment. Most of the book's chapters consist of a theoretical introduction followed by examples of how the theory might be applied to real-world problems. In the final chapters, mechanistic insights of individual-level processes help to describe broader population dynamics and pelagic food web structure and function.

Book Synopsis Environmental Adaptations by : F. John Vernberg
Download or read book Environmental Adaptations written by F. John Vernberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Adaptations examines the dynamic interaction between an organism and its external environment in order to emphasize the adaptive significance of its responses. Focusing on the adaptations of crustaceans, it bridges the gap between other volumes in the series which deal in detail with the functional machinery of crustaceans and those dealing with ecological, taxonomic, behavioral, and applied subjects. This book is divided into seven chapters. The first two chapters highlight the range of respiratory responses exhibited by crustaceans when subjected to various environmental factors. Chapter 3 summarizes the mechanisms by which crustaceans take up energy and food from the environment under fluctuating conditions. It also reviews the assimilation efficiencies of crustaceans and the predator-prey interaction. Chapter 4 deals with ionic and osmoregulation from the view of its interaction with the environment. It emphasizes the adaptive nature of chemical regulation that enables various crustaceans to inhabit waters ranging from hypersaline ponds to fresh water. Chapter 5 discusses how the various species are reproductively adapted to generate offspring in the tremendous diversity of habitats occupied by crustaceans. The last two chapters report on the specific adaptations of crustaceans to terrestrial and freshwater habitats. This book is a valuable source for zoologists, paleontologists, ecologists, physiologists, endocrinologists, morphologists, pathologists, and fisheries biologists, and an essential reference work for institutional libraries.
Book Synopsis Trophic Interactions Within Aquatic Ecosystems by : Dewey G Meyers
Download or read book Trophic Interactions Within Aquatic Ecosystems written by Dewey G Meyers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published 1984. The intent of the authors in organizing a AAAS symposium and this subsequent volume was to integrate the findings of aquatic ecologists whose research spans the first three trophic levels (algae, zooplankton and fish) of both marine and freshwater environments. Major topics (phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish and community interactions) are presented as, at least, two trophic-level associations by scientists who have distinctly differing perspectives. The format of papers varies from review to research and was chosen by authors on the basis of suitability to their specific topic.

Book Synopsis Copepods in Aquaculture by : Cheng-Sheng Lee
Download or read book Copepods in Aquaculture written by Cheng-Sheng Lee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of copepods in aquaculture has long been recognized, especially in the larval rearing of many marine fishes. This timely publication provides a single source of information on copepod biology, culture methods and practical use in marine finfish hatcheries. Originating out of a workshop held on copepods by the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii, this proceedings includes review articles and papers presented by leading international experts in copepod biology and aquaculture. It is a seminal work that integrates the most up-to-date information on selecting copepod species, effects of algal species on reproduction, ways to increase production, the nutritional value of copepods, behavioral characteristics of copepods, potential use of copepod nauplii and eggs, and their application to larval rearing of various marine finfish species.
Book Synopsis The Ecology and Evolution of Inducible Defenses by : Ralph Tollrian
Download or read book The Ecology and Evolution of Inducible Defenses written by Ralph Tollrian and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-17 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inducible defenses--those often dramatic phenotypic shifts in prey activated by biological agents ranging from predators to pathogens--are widespread in the natural world. Yet research on the inducible defenses used by vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants in terrestrial, marine, and freshwater habitats has largely developed along independent lines. Tollrian and Harvell bring together leading researchers from all fields to review common themes and explore emerging ideas. Contributors examine organisms as different as unicellular algae and higher vertebrates, and consider defenses ranging from immune systems to protective changes in morphology, behavior, chemistry, and life history.
