Book Synopsis The Fate of Justice and Righteousness during David's Reign by : Richard G. Smith
Download or read book The Fate of Justice and Righteousness during David's Reign written by Richard G. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-12-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work argues that 2 Sam 8:15-20:26 is a literary unit designed to show how David and his house failed to establish "justice and righteousness" during David's reign over all Israel. After an introductory chapter and a chapter on critical methodology the rest of the work is a close reading of 2 Sam 8:15-20:26 that pays special attention to narrative ethics. Chapter 3 makes a case for reading 2 Sam 8:15-20:26 as a coherent literary unit reflecting an ethical world-view grounded in kindness and having as its main theme "the failure of justice and righteousness to be established during David's reign." Chapter 4 presents a case for reading 2 Sam 8:15-10:19 as an account of the beginnings of justice and righteousness during David's reign in which David's kindness towards Mephibosheth is presented as analogous to a Mesopotamian royal declaration and was performed as an inaugural act of charity upon David's ascent to the throne.

Book Synopsis The Rebellion of Absalom by : Keith Bodner
Download or read book The Rebellion of Absalom written by Keith Bodner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With extraordinary range and literary energy, the story of Absalom’s rebellion in 2 Samuel ranks as the most elaborate and extensively narrated internal political event in the Hebrew Bible, complete with a host of scandalous and sordid events: illicit sex, murder, cover-up, petty crime, to name a few. For many students approaching the historical books of the Bible, however, texts often fail to address the vitality of this most turbulent period of King David’s career. Bodner addresses this shortcoming with his The Rebellion of Absalom, a lively analysis of the early monarchy of Israel, written by a recognized commentator of the Bible’s historical books. Concise and insightful, each chapter incrementally focuses on the stages of David’s rise to power and Absalom’s early life and rebellion. Crucial issues in the development of Israel’s monarchy are embedded in this story, including: royal legitimation divine election succession usurpation divine and human punishment. The Rebellion of Absalom is a student-friendly, culturally savvy approach to one of the most important episodes in deciding how the kings of Israel would be determined throughout the monarchic period.
Book Synopsis The Prophetic Voice of Amos on Contemporary Social Justice by : Patrick Kofi Amissah
Download or read book The Prophetic Voice of Amos on Contemporary Social Justice written by Patrick Kofi Amissah and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprehensively examines all texts dealing with social justice in the Prophecy of Amos. It also provides evidence of contemporary systemic social injustice. The volume then reflects on how biblical social justice is relevant to the contemporary quest for social justice. This volume demonstrates that irrespective of the hermeneutical challenges, the principles gleaned from the pages of the Hebrew Bible can dialogue effectively with modern issues and deduce living principles that could enable us to deal with issues that confront us today. It is thus a framework by which biblical social justice illuminates the contemporary quest for social justice.
Book Synopsis Jesus as the Son of 1-2 Samuel’s David by : Marc Grønbech-Dam
Download or read book Jesus as the Son of 1-2 Samuel’s David written by Marc Grønbech-Dam and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Gospel of Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the son of David, no one has systematically investigated how 1-2 Samuel influence Matthew's portrayal of Jesus as the son of David. This work addresses that lacuna and shows how the sustained use of 1-2 Samuel in Matthew evokes the themes of mercy and righteousness as the hallmarks of a proper Davidic shepherd. The book's systematic intertextual and narrative approach offers another way to understand Matthew’s Christology and portrayal of the kingdom of heaven. It helps the reader appreciate the justice-focused nature of Jesus’ rule and its religious and political implications.
Book Synopsis A Theology of Justice in Exodus by : Nathan Bills
Download or read book A Theology of Justice in Exodus written by Nathan Bills and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the theme of justice throughout the narrative of Exodus in order to explicate how yhwh’s reclamation of Israel for service-worship reveals a distinct theological ethic of justice grounded in yhwh’s character and Israel’s calling within yhwh’s creational agenda. Adopting a synchronic, text-immanent interpretive strategy that focuses on canonical and inner-biblical connections, Nathan Bills identifies two overlapping motifs that illuminate the theme of justice in Exodus. First, Bills considers the importance of Israel’s creation traditions for grounding Exodus’s theology of justice. Reading Exodus against the backdrop of creation theology and as a continuation of the plot of Genesis, Bills shows that the ethical disposition of justice imprinted on Israel in Exodus is an application of yhwh’s creational agenda of justice. Second, Bills identifies an educational agenda woven throughout the text. The narrative gives heightened attention to the way yhwh catechizes Israel in what it means to be the particular beneficiary and creational emissary of yhwh’s justice. These interpretative lenses of creation theology and pedagogy help to explain why Israel’s salvation and shaping embody a programmatic applicability of yhwh’s justice for the wider world. This volume will be of substantial interest to divinity students and religious professionals interested in the themes of exodus, exile, and return.

Book Synopsis The Fate of Saul's Progeny in the Reign of David by : Cephas TA Tushima
Download or read book The Fate of Saul's Progeny in the Reign of David written by Cephas TA Tushima and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This narrative critical study offers a bold and comprehensive analysis of the relationship between David and Saul's heirs. Tushima inquires into whether Saulides' tragedies were due to continuing divine retribution, pure happenstance, or David orchestration. Focusing on the story of David and its interconnections with the fate of the Saulides, and employing the criterion of justice, the author presents the other side of King David, who is generally depicted as hero. Tushima argues that David was, most often, unjust and calculating in his dealings with the vanquished house of Saule. Thematic and motific threads arising from this study are considered within their contexts in Israel's traditions for their biblical-theological and redemptive-historical import.

Download or read book After Qumran written by Hans Ausloos and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2012 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discoveries of the Dead Sea, as we are used to call them, have changed the scholarly landscape of textual criticism to a considerable, if not enormous, extent. The state of the art with respect to both the textual development and the interpretation of the literary and theological form of individual biblical books has been seriously challenged. It appears as if no single book can escape from reinterpretation from this perspective. One of the collections of texts that can serve as an outstanding example on which the Dead Sea Scrolls have shed new light, can be found in the so-called Historical Books. Against that background, and in co-operation with the Louvain Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (CSSTC) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (BE) and the Universidad de Alcala (ES), the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (ES) has organised an international expert symposium on the theme: After Qumran: old and new editions of biblical texts - the Historical Books (31 May - 2 June 2010). This volume presents the proceedings of this highly enriching symposium.
