Book Synopsis Revival: A History of Modern Culture: Volume I (1930) by : Preserved Smith
Download or read book Revival: A History of Modern Culture: Volume I (1930) written by Preserved Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best excuse for writing the history of anything is the intrinsic interest of the subject. Most men of past generations have thought, and many men still think, of politics as the warp and woof of social life. History for a long time therefore treated chiefly politics. Then came the economists to arouse the interest of scholars and of the public in the production and distribution of wealth. Economic history rightly absorbs much attention, for it illumines, with its new searchlight, many a dark corner of the past, and explains many features of present-day society. But to many men today the most interesting thing about society is its culture; just as the most interesting thing about an individual is his thought. Indeed, it has begun to be suspected that even politics and economics, each sometimes worshipped as a First Cause, are but secondary effects of somthing still deeper, namely, of the progress of man's intellectual life. The present volume aims to exhibit, as a unified whole, thestate and progress of modern culture.

Book Synopsis Myths of Modern Individualism by : Ian Watt
Download or read book Myths of Modern Individualism written by Ian Watt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Ian Watt examines the myths of Faust, Don Quixote, Don Juan and Robinson Crusoe, as the distinctive products of modern society. He traces the way the original versions of Faust, Don Quixote and Don Juan - all written within a forty-year period during the Counter Reformation - presented unflattering portrayals of the three figures, while the Romantic period two centuries later recreated them as admirable and even heroic. The twentieth century retained their prestige as mythical figures, but with a new note of criticism. Robinson Crusoe came much later than the other three, but his fate can be seen as representative of the new religious, economic and social attitudes which succeeded the Counter-Reformation. The four figures help to reveal problems of individualism in the modern period: solitude, narcissism, and the claims of the self versus the claims of society. They all pursue their own view of what they should be, raising strong questions about their heroes' character and the societies whose ideals they reflect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth and final volume mainly continues where Volume III left off. This book continues to explore the areas the inquisition had influence and the way it found out how heretics emerged and worked in the respective fields the inquisition caught them in. Although the methods were brutal and the victims often innocent, the inquisition shows how thorough it was when dealing with these "sins." And then finally, Lea shows us the steady decline of the inquisition after the wars of Napoleon and how they tried to survive but failed.
Book Synopsis The New Atheism, Myth, and History by : Nathan Johnstone
Download or read book The New Atheism, Myth, and History written by Nathan Johnstone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the misuse of history in New Atheism and militant anti-religion. It looks at how episodes such as the Witch-hunt, the Inquisition, and the Holocaust are mythologized to present religion as inescapably prone to violence and discrimination, whilst the darker side of atheist history, such as its involvement in Stalinism, is denied. At the same time, another constructed history—that of a perpetual and one-sided conflict between religion and science/rationalism—is commonly used by militant atheists to suggest the innate superiority of the non-religious mind. In a number of detailed case studies, the book traces how these myths have long been overturned by historians, and argues that the New Atheism’s cavalier use of history is indicative of a troubling approach to the humanities in general. Nathan Johnstone engages directly with the God debate at an academic level and contributes to the emerging study of non-religion as a culture and an identity.
