Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical and Moral Effects of Using Tobacco as a Luxury: A Prize Essay Were it possible, says Dr. Rush, for a being who had resided on our globe, to visit the inhabitants of a pla net where reason governed, and to tell them that a vile weed was in use among the inhabitants of the globe he had left, which afforded no nourishment that this weed was culti vated with immense care; that it was an important article of commerce; that the want of it produced much real mis ery; that its taste was extremely nauseous; that it was unfriendly to health and morals, and that the use of it was attended with a considerable loss of time and property, the account would be thought incredible. In no one view is it possible to contemplate the creature man, in a more absurd and ridiculous light than in his attachment to to bacco. Some may be inclined to dissent from this opinion. Man's attachment to alcohol, they will say, is still more strange 'and even more ridiculous Or, in any event, tobac co does not, like alcohol, dethrone reason and make man a brute, or what is much worse. Yet a late writer on tobac co, Dr. L. B. Coles, of Boston, on his very first page, * as sures us that besides being a more filthy sin than liquor drinking, the use of tobacco, in any form, to the same ex cess, more effectually deranges the natural action of the system. It makes wider inroads into Nature's arrange ments, he continues, than alcohol. It disturbs, in a greater degree, the natural currents of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Physical and Moral Effects of the Use of Tobacco as a Luxury: A Prize Essay Dr. Wright says, Particularly have I observed the hue cal membrane (lining of check) in smokers, to become vas cular, swollen, irritable and prone to hemorrhage. I have never observed an exception to the fact, that in smokers the voice has deepened in tone, or become hoarse or Op pressed through excessive mucous secretion. Many an ir ritable cough, without increased secretion from the tracheo bronchial membrane, and many a cough dependent upon increased secretion, have I known to follow the frequent use of tobacco in smoking. I believe it to be the great an tagonist of the nervous system, especially in its relations to the organs of sense, of reproduction, and of digestion. I shall take the liberty to transcribe the following from the pen of Dr. Laycock, a distinguished London practitioner although the same has been published in at least one Med ical Journal, and in an anti-tobacco pamphlet. Book excerpt: John Maynard Keynes, then a rising young economist, participated in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 as chief representative of the British Treasury and advisor to Prime Minister David Lloyd George. He resigned after desperately trying and failing to reduce the huge demands for reparations being made on Germany. The Economic Consequences of the Peace is Keynes' brilliant and prophetic analysis of the effects that the peace treaty would have both on Germany and, even more fatefully, the world.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • NAMED ONE OF TIME’S TEN BEST NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE DECADE • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF OPRAH’S “BOOKS THAT HELP ME THROUGH” • NOW AN HBO ORIGINAL SPECIAL EVENT Hailed by Toni Morrison as “required reading,” a bold and personal literary exploration of America’s racial history by “the most important essayist in a generation and a writer who changed the national political conversation about race” (Rolling Stone) NAMED ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BOOKS OF THE DECADE BY CNN • NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • O: The Oprah Magazine • The Washington Post • People • Entertainment Weekly • Vogue • Los Angeles Times • San Francisco Chronicle • Chicago Tribune • New York • Newsday • Library Journal • Publishers Weekly In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.
