Book Synopsis The Darker Side of Paradise by : Dick Reed
Download or read book The Darker Side of Paradise written by Dick Reed and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is based on a true story, my own story, which happened in 1998 in the Eastern Caribbean and in Western Europe. I was in my mid-fifties, recovering from a radioactive divorce, loss of home and family and my company, a successful ad agency. I had simply reached a point in my life where I had to make some new choices about the future, which at the time seemed like it would be shorter and less financially rewarding than what had gone before. I knew, however, that my broad life experiences would serve me well in whatever opportunities presented themselves. An attorney friend of mine, who was active in international finance and offshore banking, introduced me to Sir James “Son” Mitchell, the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the Eastern Caribbean. I was hired to set up and promote banking conferences in Puerto Rico and London to introduce the island’s new banking laws to the world of international finance. And we had some encouraging early results. Until one night in San Juan, Son Mitchell asked me to get involved as a PR consultant in a murder trial in Kingstown, the capitol. Two rich hillbillies from West Virginia, on a coke and alcohol tour of the islands on their very large sailboat, had murdered a very popular, local water taxi driver. The couple was incarcerated, but had hired an expensive legal team with major press connections to crush the reputation of Son and his government’s legal system. I got involved, we had success early on, but then an extremely rich and powerful Italian “family” got involved. What started after that was a James Bondian adventure that became quite dangerous personally. And made me thankful for my experience as a Navy officer in Viet Nam. Quite naturally, a lot of beautiful women were involved in the process, and thankfully I got out alive. I wrote the novel in the first person because I did not want to stray from the spine of the story, although as a writer, I felt privileged to speak of my personal experiences growing up in the South, and the marvelous blessings that had come my way over the years. I hope you like the book. Dick Reed, author

Book Synopsis A Guide to F. Scott Fitzgerald's St. Paul by : John J. Koblas
Download or read book A Guide to F. Scott Fitzgerald's St. Paul written by John J. Koblas and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boyhood pranks in the backyards of Cathedral Hill mansions. Young love at the Minnesota State Fair. Jazz Age parties at the University Club, golfing and dancing at the White Bear Yacht Club. F. Scott Fitzgerald's St. Paul boyhood shaped him--and provided scenery and plots for many of his most successful short stories. Fitzgerald's parents moved many times, but they stayed in the same well-to-do city neighborhood. The young writer continued this pattern after his marriage and early popular success. In this book, informative biographical detail blends with lustrous vignettes from the fiction of one of the greatest writers in twentieth-century America, offering easy access to over 100 places of interest in Minnesota's capital city. The first part of this guidebook tells the story of Fitzgerald in St. Paul by describing his connections to 35 significant places in the city, from his birthplace to the schools, homes, and businesses he knew. Part two identifies 106 places associated with the city's most famous literary son.

Book excerpt: Adam Newman once had it all. But then he lost it. Now Adam yearns to reunite with his estranged wife, Evelyn, and recapture the Edenic life they once had running Paradise Dogs, the roadside hot-dog restaurant now legendary throughout central Florida. He has a few obstacles along the way. For starters, there's his impending marriage to Lily. There's also the matter of a quarter million dollars' worth of diamonds that he mislaid, along with what appears to be a shadowy conspiracy that is buying up land around the Cross-Florida Canal (and which may or may not be a product of Adam's alcohol-infused imagination). Despite his own troubles---and a brief stay in Chattahoochee---Adam looks to mentor his son, Addison, in the ways of love. Awkward, unsure, and employed as the world's least accurate obituary writer, Addison pines for a beautiful and painfully earnest linguistic student but must compete for her attention with his older and more sophisticated half brother from Evelyn's first marriage. But if anybody can set these worlds in order, it is Adam, who has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time and allowing others to believe he's someone he's not. Whether it's delivering a baby, rescuing a marriage, or exposing a Communist conspiracy, our protagonist is up for the job. Paradise Dogs, from Georgia Author of the Year Award winner Man Martin, is a farcical tale of paradise lost, the American Dream, and the true measures of love
