But by the one that is most lacking. Only when necessary ingredients are in proper proportions can maximum results he obtained. There is a point about this that deserves careful attention. A shortage of Nitrogen may be corrected by an application of Nitrate of Soda in time to save the crop; a deficiency of Potash or Phosphoric Acid is shown too late to apply a remedy. And the season is lost, as the labor and expense of a large crop per acre is but little more than a small one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold's classic work A Sand County Almanac is widely regarded as one of the most influential conservation books of all time. In it, Leopold sets forth an eloquent plea for the development of a "land ethic" -- a belief that humans have a duty to interact with the soils, waters, plants, and animals that collectively comprise "the land" in ways that ensure their well-being and survival. For the Health of the Land, a new collection of rare and previously unpublished essays by Leopold, builds on that vision of ethical land use and develops the concept of "land health" and the practical measures landowners can take to sustain it. The writings are vintage Leopold -- clear, sensible, and provocative, sometimes humorous, often lyrical, and always inspiring. Joining them together are a wisdom and a passion that transcend the time and place of the author's life. The book offers a series of forty short pieces, arranged in seasonal "almanac" form, along with longer essays, arranged chronologically, which show the development of Leopold's approach to managing private lands for conservation ends. The final essay is a never before published work, left in pencil draft at his death, which proposes the concept of land health as an organizing principle for conservation. Also featured is an introduction by noted Leopold scholars J. Baird Callicott and Eric T. Freyfogle that provides a brief biography of Leopold and places the essays in the context of his life and work, and an afterword by conservation biologist Stanley A. Temple that comments on Leopold's ideas from the perspective of modern wildlife management. The book's conservation message and practical ideas are as relevant today as they were when first written over fifty years ago. For the Health of the Land represents a stunning new addition to the literary legacy of Aldo Leopold.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmers Scientific Manual There are only about sixty-six simple elements known to the chemist. Of these, and their various combinations, all matter, solid, liquid and gaseous, is composed. When an element is found occurring naturally, and not combined with another, it is said to exist free in nature. Nearly all Of the substances composing the vegetable, animal and mineral kingdoms, are combinations Of two or more elements. Matter is indestructible. The apparent destruction Of a substance is merely the breaking up of its elements and the formation of new compounds. Many of these elements have an attraction or affinity for each other; the rusting Of iron is merely the union of iron with oxygen which exists in air and water. Heat, light and electricity aid the union of these elements. It has been found that these elements are governed by laws in their union with each other, and that these laws, like those in other departments of nature, are uniform and constant in their operation. One Of these laws is, that elements always unite with each other in certain proportions by weight and volume; should there be an excess Of one element present, it will remain uncombined. The elements are divided into various classes, viz: those which exist as gases only, those which are liquid, and those which are solid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Management a Handbook for Farm Pupils The object of this book is to give farm pupils, farmers' sons, and all who are commencing the study of agriculture, a clear conception of the manner in which a farm is organised and managed. There is much valuable literature describing in detail the different breeds of stock, the varieties of farm crops, and the numerous operations connected with each, but, to the beginner, such books are apt to be confusing, as he is at a loss to understand properly how one thing fits in with another, how the stock kept influences the crops grown, and how the various matters concerned have to be controlled in order to make farming a remunerative pursuit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farmer's Handbook on Concrete Construction The fact that concrete 1s a plastic material and is easily cast in any required shape makes it especially adapted to farm structures. If properly made it will last forever. Its durable qualities are such that it means the elimination of cost for repairs and renewals. It is a dense and impervious substance affording no harbor for rats, vermin, and other destructive agencies. With the exception of the Portland cement, the necessary materials are usually found upon the farm. For the reasons stated, concrete makes strong appeal to the farmer. The actual money saved in repairs and reconstruction will soon offset any excess cost over other materials. It is often the case, however, that concrete structures cost no more than buildings of other materials, and often less. The farmer can ordinarily do the work with the assistance of his farm hands, making it unnecessary to hire an expert carpenter or mason. Great economy is achieved in this way. Perhaps the greatest benefit to be derived from concrete con struction is the elimination of fire risk. This is of vital importance to the farmer, who is usually too far from a town to permit of any real protection from fire.
