Book excerpt: An approachable, comprehensive guide to the modern world of vegetables, from the leading grower of specialty vegetables in the country Near the shores of Lake Erie is a family-owned farm with a humble origin story that has become the most renowned specialty vegetable grower in America. After losing their farm in the early 1980s, a chance encounter with a French-trained chef at their farmers' market stand led the Jones family to remake their business and learn to grow unique ingredients that were considered exotic at the time, like microgreens and squash blossoms. They soon discovered chefs across the country were hungry for these prized ingredients, from Thomas Keller in Napa Valley to Daniel Boulud in New York City. Today, they provide exquisite vegetables for restaurants and home cooks across the country. The Chef's Garden grows and harvests with the notion that every part of the plant offers something unique for the plate. From a perfect-tasting carrot, to a tiny red royal turnip, to a pencil lead-thin cucumber still attached to its blossom, The Chef's Garden is constantly innovating to grow vegetables sustainably and with maximum flavor. It's a Willy Wonka factory for vegetables. In this guide and cookbook, The Chef's Garden, led by Farmer Lee Jones, shares with readers the wealth of knowledge they've amassed on how to select, prepare, and cook vegetables. Book Synopsis Oscar Lives Next Door by : Bonnie Farmer
Download or read book Oscar Lives Next Door written by Bonnie Farmer and published by Owlkids. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fictional glimpse into famous jazz musician Oscar Peterson's youth Long before Oscar Peterson became a virtuoso jazz pianist, he was a boy who loved to play the trumpet. When childhood tuberculosis weakened his lungs, Oscar could no longer play his beloved instrument. He took up piano and the rest is history: Oscar went on to become an international jazz piano sensation. Oscar Lives Next Door, now available in paperback, is a fictional story inspired by these facts. The book imagines a next-door neighbor for Oscar named Millie, who gets into mischief with him but also appreciates his talents: Oscar hears music in everything, and Millie calls him a magician for the way he can coax melodies from his trumpet. Millie writes to Oscar during his long stay in the hospital for tuberculosis, and she encourages his earliest notes on the piano. Set in Oscar's true childhood neighborhood of St-Henri--now known as Little Burgundy--the book provides a wonderful sense of this 1930s neighborhood where much of Montreal's Black working class population lived. Detailed digital illustrations make the community's culture and music almost tangible. The book concludes with a page of informational text about the author's own connection to Little Burgundy and a short biography of the jazz legend.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An unprecedented look into the personal and creative life of the visionary auteur David Lynch, through his own words and those of his closest colleagues, friends, and family “Insightful . . . an impressively industrious and comprehensive account of Lynch’s career.”—The New York Times Book Review In this unique hybrid of biography and memoir, David Lynch opens up for the first time about a life lived in pursuit of his singular vision, and the many heartaches and struggles he’s faced to bring his unorthodox projects to fruition. Lynch’s lyrical, intimate, and unfiltered personal reflections riff off biographical sections written by close collaborator Kristine McKenna and based on more than one hundred new interviews with surprisingly candid ex-wives, family members, actors, agents, musicians, and colleagues in various fields who all have their own takes on what happened. Room to Dream is a landmark book that offers a onetime all-access pass into the life and mind of one of our most enigmatic and utterly original living artists. With insights into . . . Eraserhead The Elephant Man Dune Blue Velvet Wild at Heart Twin Peaks Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me Lost Highway The Straight Story Mulholland Drive INLAND EMPIRE Twin Peaks: The Return Praise for Room to Dream “A memorable portrait of one of cinema’s great auteurs . . . provides a remarkable insight into [David] Lynch’s intense commitment to the ‘art life.’ ”—The Guardian “This is the best book by and about a movie director since Elia Kazan’s A Life (1988) and Michael Powell’s A Life in Movies (1986). But Room to Dream is more enchanting or appealing than those classics. . . . What makes this book endearing is its chatty, calm account of how genius in America can be a matter-of-fact defiance of reality that won’t alarm your dog or save mankind. It’s the only way to dream in so disturbed a country.”—San Francisco Chronicle
Book Synopsis The Farmer's Boy by : Robin Armstrong Brown
Download or read book The Farmer's Boy written by Robin Armstrong Brown and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the memoir of a child growing up in England at war. Life on a small farm in Sussex was full of the beauties of the countryside; though it was peopled not only with all the rural characters - farmers and labourers, stockmen and squires, but also with poachers and poisoners, bobbies, blacksmiths, charcoal burners, pedlars, and maybe arsonists too. In the background, this was a countryside peopled with soldiers from many parts, tanks, Bren gun carriers, military convoys, and aria-singing prisoners. Overhead the Spitfires and the Hurricanes of the RAF battled with the Luftwaffe, and Typhoons practised the dangerous art of nudging Flying Bombs back towards the Channel. Life at a tough sports-mad public school on the coast was more to be endured than enjoyed. But a menace threatened from an unexpected quarter, which should have existed for our protection. It slowly became clear that our farm was fighting against the threat of intentional ruin.
Book Synopsis Betting on the Farm by : Patricia L. Maclachlan
Download or read book Betting on the Farm written by Patricia L. Maclachlan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), a nationwide network of farm cooperatives, is under increasing pressure to expand farmer incomes by adapting coop strategies to changing market incentives. Some coops have adapted more successfully than others. In Betting on the Farm, Patricia L. Maclachlan and Kay Shimizu attribute these differences to three sets of local variables: resource endowments and product-specific market conditions, coop leadership, and the organization of farmer-members behind new coop strategies. Using in-depth case studies and profiles of different types of farmers, Betting on the Farm also explores the evolution of the formal and informal institutional foundations of postwar agriculture; the electoral sources of JA's influence; the interactive effects of economic liberalization and demographic pressures (an aging farm population and acute shortage of farm successors) on the propensity for change within the farm sector; and the diversification of Japan's traditional farm households and the implications for farmer ties with JA.

At least that’s what she tells herself when she retreats to Axedale to record a new web series and write a cookbook. That sounds so much better than damage control after her only live, on-screen interview ends in an oh-so-public epileptic seizure. Farmer Sam McQuade is immediately attracted to Penelope, but the ultra femme and high maintenance city girl seems way out of her league. When Penelope struggles to get her health on track, Quade insists on being her knight in shining armor, much to Penelope’s displeasure. Quade is annoyingly good-looking, not to mention kindhearted, and falling for her would be so easy. If only it didn’t force Penelope to face the secrets she’s hidden from everyone. Can love alone bring a complex city girl and a simple rural farmer together?
