Book excerpt: At the height of the Great Depression, an eccentric man named George Daynor arrived in Vineland. He was rumored to have amassed a fortune during the gold rush only to lose it in the crash of 1929. Daynor invested in a piece of barren land that nobody else wanted and--believing that he was guided by angels--built a "palace" from car parts, trash, bits of stone and anything else he could find. The Palace Depression, as it came to be known, was one man's testament to surviving the hard times, and hundreds of thousands flocked to its gates over the next two decades. A misguided publicity stunt landed Daynor in jail, and after his incarceration and death, the palace deteriorated and was torn down in the 1960s. Yet the memory lingered for some local residents who started a movement to rebuild. Discover Vineland's mysterious story of Daynor and his palace.

Book excerpt: Most of the roughly 140,000 Holocaust survivors who came to the United States in the first decade after World War II settled in big cities such as New York. But a few thousand chose an alternative way of life on American farms. More of these accidental farmers wound up raising chickens in southern New Jersey than anywhere else. Speaking Yiddish to Chickens is the first book to chronicle this little-known chapter in American Jewish history when these mostly Eastern European refugees – including the author’s grandparents - found an unlikely refuge and gateway to new lives in the US on poultry farms. They gravitated to a section of south Jersey anchored by Vineland, a small rural city where previous waves of Jewish immigrants had built a rich network of cultural and religious institutions. This book relies on interviews with dozens of these refugee farmers and their children, as well as oral histories and archival records to tell how they learned to farm while coping with unimaginable grief. They built small synagogues within walking distance of their farms and hosted Yiddish cultural events more frequently found on the Lower East Side than perhaps anywhere else in rural America at the time. Like refugees today, they embraced their new American identities and enriched the community where they settled, working hard in unfamiliar jobs for often meager returns. Within a decade, falling egg prices and the rise of industrial-scale agriculture in the South would drive almost all of these novice poultry farmers out of business, many into bankruptcy. Some hated every minute here; others would remember their time on south Jersey farms as their best years in America. They enjoyed a quieter way of life and more space for themselves and their children than in the crowded New York City apartments where so many displaced persons settled. This is their remarkable story of loss, renewal, and perseverance in the most unexpected of settings. Author Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/YiddishtoChickens)

He thinks his life is over, but it's just beginning. Neil moves back in with his eccentric parents and their manic mutt, Pickles. His best friend, Robbie, who when he's not quoting conspiracy theories is cracking jokes, gets Neil laughing again despite his misfortunes. Kate, the cute spunky waitress from the quirky eighties-themed diner, The Breakfast Club, hires Neil to paint her ramshackle rooming house on the wrong side of town. It's a house inhabited by Kate's somewhat oddball tenants, but with whom Neil soon begins to feel at home, as a budding romance between Neil and Kate develops. We soon find that danger and mystery lie ahead for Neil as the story unfolds. A brush with death during a car-jacking brings to Neil the realization that life is more important than his past misfortunes. He vows to move on with his life and forget the past. For Neil, that's something that is easier said than done. Neil befriends a mysterious old man and his grandson who move next door. The old man knows a secret from Neil's past that not even Neil knows, and once revealed will change Neil's life forever. "The protagonist, Neil Grayson, is a relatable and personable guy, and his struggles to overcome a tragic past and the disappointments of his present will appeal to readers. The secondary characters in the novel are also very relatable, and it's clear that the author has an imaginative cast of characters he is drawing inspiration from. Neil is sympathetic and likable and the dialogue is lively." - Judge, Writer's Digest 21st Annual Book Awards

Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.
