Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family and Slavery "The Lord established a testimony in Jacob, and a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers that they should make known to their children, that the generation to come might know them; who should arise and declare them unto their children, that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments." - Ps. 78: 6, 7, 8. The relations of the family state are those of husband and wife, parent and child, brother and sister, and master and servant. The first is voluntarily formed, the second and third are derived from it, and all three are perpetual, except as God shall dissolve them. The last is not essential to the family, and unlike the others, has its origin and perpetuity not in nature, but in circumstances. The necessities of society have generally required its existence, but no class of men has been divinely and specifically designated to fill it. The divine law, however, requires that where it exists, the master shall remember that he has a master in heaven, and shall consequently treat the servant as a rational and accountable fellow man, forbearing threatening, showing kindness, and giving him as a creature of God, and not of human law or custom, what is just and equal; and that the servant shall act honestly, faithfully, and with good will. Servitude on such conditions may be greatly advantageous to the parties concerned. Slavery is involuntary, hereditary, and unrequited servitude. It is the exaction of service without consent, and gives one man a claim to the life-long labor of another, with authority to enforce that claim, if necessary, with severe punishment. Certainly, he is as much a slave to the state, though he be called a free man. The state subjects men while within her jurisdiction to her control, and claims a right to-their service in wha'ts rer form she may in her sovereignty, be pleased to call for it; so the master subjects his slave to his control, and claims a right to his service in whatever form he may call for it. But is not this service or labor to the state, and this subjection to her authority, all voluntary on the part of the white race? An swer. It is not more voluntary with the white minor, and the female half of the white race, than with the black slave. Both 'may quietly submit to it, while neither may like it. The white minor and the black slave are both born equally subject to absolute control without their consent. Both are born in a state of domestic bondage, one for life, to his master, the other for twenty-one years, to his father. When this age is reached he who has been in domestic bondage up to this time, silently acquiesces in subjection to 'the 'state, which now binds him for the balance of his life, to service and subjection; as the African is bound to his master for the balance of his life. The state, who is the master of the citizen. And the man, who is the master of the slave; is right fully clothed with authority the world 'over to. Maintain dominion over both. This done, it could proceed, beginning with Cuba, to the annexation, one after another, of the West India Islands. It then could extend its power Over the whole continent of South America, and threaten an advance upon Eastern Asia, and the annexation of all the cotton-producing countries and tropical regions Of the globe, and through the monopoly of cotton, rice, and tropical productions in general, to Obtain the control of the commerce and credit of all nations. Such, to a greater or less extent, is the dream which Southern statesmen have indulged, and which they have taken the first step toward realizing. In its full extent no sane man supposes the dream practicable; but its practicability, up to a certain point, has been demonstrated by the suc cess which has hitherto attended the Rebellion, for, up to the present, successful it undeniably has been. The Confederates have brought into the field a more effective, if not a larger force, than the Federal govern ment has thus far brought against them and, from the Potomac to the Mississippi, they hold the strategic lines, and can be met by the Federal forces only at great disadvantage. Of course, I followed, and before we got to the fields, we had eaten the food nearly all up. When the workers returned home they complained, and we were whipped. The slaves got their allowance every Monday night of molasses, meat, corn meal, and a kind of flour called dredgings or shorts. Perhaps this allowance would be gone before the next Mon day night, in which case the slaves would steal hogs and chickens. Then would come the whipping-post. Master himself never whipped his slaves; this was left to the overseer. We children had no supper, and only a little piece of. Bread or something of the kind in the morning. Our dishes consisted of one wooden bowl, and oyster shells were our spoons. This bowl served for about fifteen children, and often the dogs and the ducks and the peafowl had a dip in it. Indeed the question has become so mixed up with pecuniary, party, political, and religious considerations, so long viewed through a contracted theology, or an undiscriminating false philanthropy, that we should not wonder to find the public mind confused, disgusted and disinclined patiently, calm ly, and candidly to examine the matter, neither in its abstract simplicity nor in the complications of its modified character as a political institution yet, to reconcile difficulties, relieve con science, reach just conclusions, a proper sense of duty and act Wisely, this is essential, for there is all the difference of light and darkness between abstract slavery and slavery as a politi cal institution.
