Book excerpt: There is no question in the mind of any true child of God about the fact of his security in the Father's keeping. To say that those who do not accept one particular theory concerning Christian security are therefore without such assurance is incorrect. I do not have to be told that I cannot under any circumstances take my own life in order to be free from fear of suicide. The security of the real Christian is complete and entire, wanting nothing. There are, however, some very false and therefore very dangerous notions abroad as to the nature of Christian security. A false security is worse than none at all, for it breeds carelessness and unfounded confidence. True security demands knowledge of the conditions on which it rests. "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall" (1 Cor. 10:12). It is our firm conviction that any teaching regarding the security of the believer which allows for deliberate disobedience to God in the "Christian" life is a travesty on the Bible. Any doctrine which offers hope to the backslider that his salvation is assured apart from a personal repentance and return to the Lord is false security. Unfortunately, many who teach what is popularly known as "eternal security" teach exactly that, as numerous quotations from their writings would show. This teaching is dangerous and unscrip-tural. True security demands complete repudiation of such a doctrine. No attempt is made here to cite authorities, although care has been taken to copy word for word the passages indicated in quotation marks. It is primarily our desire to see what "saith the Lord." All Bible quotations are from the King James Version, but a check of the more recent versions will indicate that the teaching of no passage is materially altered in any good translation. We propose to study some of the great security promises in order that their truth may safeguard our souls and keep us from presumptuous sins. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Ps. 119:11). In this way we shall know the true security promised to all of God's children. It is not our wish to be argumentative, although argument is involved when contrasting points of view are set against each other. Our title for this booklet is an obvious paraphrase of the title of Dr. Harry A. Ironside's book, Holiness: the False and the True, a book ably answered by Henry Brockett in Scriptural Freedom from Sin (Kansas City, Mo.: Beacon Hill Press, 1941). Brother Ironside did not believe in the Wesley-an doctrine of holiness, nor can I accept his theory of security. A more complete examination of the issues in Christian security has been made by R. A. Shank in his volume entitled Life in the Son. Coming as it does from evangelical circles traditionally supporting the doctrine known as eternal security, its thorough refutation of this theory is the more impressive.

Some hold the position that no one can know the answer to that question until they pass on from this life. In a sincere search for an accurate answer, guesswork will not provide the kind of clarity we seek. It has to be one of the most serious questions-if not the most serious question we each need the answer for. Either a person can know that assurance or they cannot. If we can know we have a home in Heaven, then how? If we cannot have that assurance, then why not? Is it too much to hope for that a person could have the promise of eternal peace with God? As Believers, we rejoice that the Lord Jesus promised His followers peace "not as the world gives," and that one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is a continuing ministry of peace while we, His people, are here on earth. Could it not be considered Biblically normal for a Believer to enjoy the comforting assurance of eternal life even as the Lord promised His followers abundant life while on earth? If not, it certainly appears that Believers are missing out on peace, comfort, joy, happiness, security, and a source of fervor for a life of service to the Lord. I believe the Lord wants the best for His people and that the Bible teaches we will "never perish" and "never thirst again." Perhaps the most challenging question a professing Believer-especially a new convert has to deal with-is whether or not a Christian could ever go to hell. It is shocking to find that there is such unsettled belief about such an eternally serious question. I was raised in a church that taught a person who professed Christ could be truly redeemed, saved, born again, and then later in their Christian walk, turn away, be deceived away, rebel, sin away their faith, and end up lost and undone and headed for separation from God. It's as if what they are advocating is "OK, Jesus, your sacrificial blood was sufficient to get me saved, but if I'm going to make it to heaven someday, I have to be faithful, read my Bible every day, pray regularly, witness to others daily, win others to Christ regularly, attend every church service and church-sponsored event coming or going, in effect saying Christ's Work needs supplemented! I now believe that this doctrinal position is blasphemy." When Jesus cried out from His cross, "It is finished!" He wasn't talking about His ordeal of suffering, He was talking about His Sacrificial Work of Redemption, nothing to be taken from It, nothing added to It. He alone accomplished it. (Heb. 1:3) Anything mankind would offer could try to take away from His Glory. The good works that a Believer does (Bible reading, witnessing, praying, etc.) are done because we are saved not in order to be more assured of making it to Heaven someday. Nothing human could ever supplement the atoning Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, a ministry only HE has (Heb. 1:3)
