Book excerpt: Divided into sections that represent the breadth of Alison Rossiter's (born 1953) process and vision, 'Expired Paper' offers a comprehensive look at the artist's body of cameraless photo-art?Latent, Landscapes, Pools, Pours, Dips, Blurs, Fours and Collages. Art critic Leah Ollman has been contemplating Rossiter's work for years, and her accompanying text serves as an ideal complement to the images: 'All of the works pay homage to the rich idiosyncrasies of photographic papers across history, and restore a sanctity to the photograph as object. Made without cameras, lenses or film, the works are nothing but process and materiality.' The book also includes a selection of early 20th-century photographic paper packages (which the artist has collected for over 10 years) in a separate booklet.

Book Synopsis America's Expiration Date by : Cal Thomas
Download or read book America's Expiration Date written by Cal Thomas and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warning and a wake-up call to learn history so we are not doomed to repeat it. A must-read for anyone who longs for a promising future for our great nation. What is wrong with America today? Is it possible that America could crumble and our democracy fail? Questions like these plague Americans and cause us to be anxious about the future of the "land that we love." Individuals may come to different conclusions, but there seems to be a common thread - the deep-seated feeling that we need to improve our country. Our culture is increasingly immoral, the family structure is threatened from all sides, and government programs consistently overreach, creating massive debt. In this powerful and prophetic book, nationally syndicated columnist and trusted political commentator Cal Thomas offers a diagnosis of what exactly is wrong with the United States by drawing parallels to once-great empires and nations that declined into oblivion. Citing the historically proven 250-year pattern of how superpowers rise and fall, he predicts that America's expiration date is just around the corner and shows us how to escape their fate. Through biblical insights and hard-hitting truth, he reminds us that real change comes when America looks to God instead of Washington. Scripture, rather than politics, is the GPS he uses to point readers to the right road - a road of hope, life, and change. Because, he says, if we're willing to seek God first, learn from history, and make changes at the individual and community level, we can not only survive, but thrive, again. This powerful, timely, and much-needed perspective is a must-read for anyone who longs for a promising future for our great nation.
Book Synopsis The Southern Past by : William Fitzhugh Brundage
Download or read book The Southern Past written by William Fitzhugh Brundage and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Civil War whites and blacks have struggled over the meanings and uses of the Southern past. Indeed, today's controversies over flying the Confederate flag, renaming schools and streets, and commemorating the Civil War and the civil rights movement are only the latest examples of this ongoing divisive contest over issues of regional identity and heritage. The Southern Past argues that these battles are ultimately about who has the power to determine what we remember of the past, and whether that remembrance will honor all Southerners or only select groups. For more than a century after the Civil War, elite white Southerners systematically refined a version of the past that sanctioned their racial privilege and power. In the process, they filled public spaces with museums and monuments that made their version of the past sacrosanct. Yet, even as segregation and racial discrimination worsened, blacks contested the white version of Southern history and demanded inclusion. Streets became sites for elaborate commemorations of emancipation and schools became centers for the study of black history. This counter-memory surged forth, and became a potent inspiration for the civil rights movement and the black struggle to share a common Southern past rather than a divided one. W. Fitzhugh Brundage's searing exploration of how those who have the political power to represent the past simultaneously shape the present and determine the future is a valuable lesson as we confront our national past to meet the challenge of current realities.

Book Synopsis A Computerized Method for Instantaneous and Continuous Measurements of Expired Nitrogen by : John Abajian
Download or read book A Computerized Method for Instantaneous and Continuous Measurements of Expired Nitrogen written by John Abajian and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis for the on-line study of pulmonary nitrogen washout by hybrid computer is presented. The instrument produces a semilogarithmic plot of nitrogen concentration in expired gas versus cumulative alveolar ventilatory volume. Simultaneous measurements of functional residual capacity and main conducting airway volume are also recorded. Comparison of conventional washout methods and computer technique proved the validity of the computer. Secondly, a new index of intrapulmonary gas distribution is devised. The index (IDI or Inspired Gas Distribution Index) is quite sensitive to any change of the gas distribution in the lung and has a very small physiological variation (1.8 plus or minus 0.2). As one application of this computer in research, the effect of expiratory obstruction in normal subjects is studied. A 5 mm. diameter obstruction does not affect the gas distribution in the supine position, whereas the obstruction has a striking effect on gas distribution when a subject is exercising in the upright position.
