Book Synopsis The Politics of Labor in a Global Age by : Christopher Candland
Download or read book The Politics of Labor in a Global Age written by Christopher Candland and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-09-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Labor in a Global Age is one of the first works to analyse and compare recent shifts in patterns of industrial relations across late-industrializing and post-socialist economies. The volume features original and timely essays on labor relations at national, local, and workplace levels, as economic and politicla actors cope with the similar challenges associated with economic adjustment measures and the impact of 'globalization'. The authors reveal that while globalization has threatened the position of organized labor and prompted business and state elites to accommodate greater labor market flexibility, the legacies of past institutions remain evident in destinctive trends in labor politics within and across late-industrializing and post-socialist settings. The comparisons suggest that globalization is best understood not as a source of covergence but as a set of common pressures that are mediated by specific historical inheritances, that spur varied responses on the part of industrial relations actors, and that facilitate quite diverse institutional outcomes.

Download or read book Labor, Democratization and Development in India and Pakistan written by Christopher Candland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-20 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comparative study of organized labor in India and Pakistan, the author analyses the impact and role of organized labor in democratization and development. The study provides a unique comparative history of Indian and Pakistani labor politics. It begins in the early twentieth century, when permanent unions first formed in the South Asian Subcontinent. Additionally, it offers an analysis of changes in conditions of work and terms of service in India and Pakistan and of organized labor’s response. The conclusions shed new light on the influence of organized labor in national politics, economic policy, economic welfare and at the workplace. It is demonstrated that the protection of workers has desirable outcomes not only for those workers covered but also for democratic practice and for economic development.

Book excerpt: This book offers the detailed historical background required for a holistic appreciation of current problems faced and the possibilities for revitalisation. In two volumes it provides introductory overviews of trade union development since the end of World War II in 26 countries from every corner of the globe. Each chapter explains the main contours of trade union growth and development in one country from the pivotal year 1945 to the present. Each chapter assesses the often dynamic expansion of trade unionism in the 1950s and 1960s; the role of trade unionism in the movements for national liberation in the Global South and the erection of social welfare systems in the developed North; the economic shocks that resulted in membership decline and loss of political influence from the late 1970s onward; the economic restructuring and growing labour market diversity of the 1980s and 1990s that undercut the traditional bases of trade union membership; and the historical roots of the contemporary political and economic context in which revitalisation efforts are taking place.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, globalization has had a tremendous and far reaching impact on Indian management culture, policy and leadership styles. Management in India presents the first comprehensive and indepth examination of the emerging changes in Indian management culture both at the macro and micro levels and their impact on domestic and multinational businesses based in India. Drawing on the talent of outstanding contributors, the editors of this book analyse how the Indian business scenario is changing rapidly, while the attitude towards and orientation and practice of management has been correspondingly slow to change. Indian managers have found it difficult to change policies both at the enterprise and the employee level to match an increasingly global and international environment.
Book Synopsis Non-discrimination and Equality in India by : Vidhu Verma
Download or read book Non-discrimination and Equality in India written by Vidhu Verma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Justice is a concept familiar to most Indians but one whose meaning is not always understood as it signifies a variety of government strategies designed to enhance opportunities for underprivileged groups. By tracing the trajectory of social justice from the colonial period to the present, this book examines how it informs ideas, practices and debates on discrimination and disadvantage today. After outlining the historical context for reservations for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes that began under British colonial rule, the book examines the legal and moral strands of demands raised by newer groups since 1990. In addition the book shows how the development of quota policies has been significantly influenced by the nature and operation of democracy in India. It describes the recent proliferation of quota demands for reservations in higher education, private sector and for women and religious minorities in legislative assemblies. The book goes on to argue that while proliferation of demands address unequal incidence of poverty, deprivation and inequalities across social groups and communities, care has to be taken to ensure that existing justifications for quotas for discriminated groups due to caste hierarchies are not undermined. Providing a rich historical background to the subject, the book is a useful contribution to the study on the evolution of multiple conceptions of social justice in contemporary India.
