Book Synopsis The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises by : Nikos Kazantzakis
Download or read book The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises written by Nikos Kazantzakis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a writer and philosopher, Nikos Kazantzakis struggled all his life with existential questions, once spending several months in a monastery in an attempt to attain a closer relationship with God. His relentless quest to understand the nature of life through travel, extensive reading, and constant conversation with a diverse array of compatriots ultimately led Kazantzakis to compose this book of "spiritual exercises" meant to help the reader achieve harmony between the countervailing human impulses toward an immortality-seeking asceticism and toward a more nihilistic and materialist view of death. As with all Kazantzakis’s philosophical works, The Saviors of God sheds light on a mind uniquely suited to a nuanced examination of what it means to be human, and establishes a hopeful vision for a dazzlingly syncretic approach to spiritual life.

Book Synopsis In Search of Transcendence by : Jerry H. Gill
Download or read book In Search of Transcendence written by Jerry H. Gill and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the philosophical/religious thought of Soren Kierkegaard, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Nikos Kazantzakis in relation to the concept of transcendence. Each of these thinkers has made a strong impact on Western religious and philosophical thought, but each from a nearly completely different angle as well as from a different national background. This comparative study therefore crosses both national and perspectival boundaries. Each of the three thinkers struggled with the notion of transcendence but in uniquely distinct fashion. The conclusion offers yet a third model, the author’s, for understanding transcendence focusing on the concept of “mediation”.

Book Synopsis Existential Theology by : Hue Woodson
Download or read book Existential Theology written by Hue Woodson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential Theology: An Introduction offers a formalized and comprehensive examination of the field of existential theology, in order to distinguish it as a unique field of study and view it as a measured synthesis of the concerns of Christian existentialism, Christian humanism, and Christian philosophy with the preoccupations of proper existentialism and a series of unfolding themes from Augustine to Kierkegaard. To do this, Existential Theology attends to the field through the exploration of genres: the European traditions in French, Russian, and German schools of thought, counter-traditions in liberation, feminist, and womanist approaches, and postmodern traditions located in anthropological, political, and ethical approaches. While the cultural contexts inform how each of the selected philosopher-theologians present genres of "existential theology," other unique genres are examined in theoretical and philosophical contexts, particularly through a selected set of theologians, philosophers, thinkers, and theorists that are not generally categorized theologically. By assessing existential theology through how it manifests itself in "genres," this book brings together lesser-known figures, well-known thinkers, and figures that are not generally viewed as "existential theologians" to form a focused understanding of the question of the meaning of "existential theology" and what "existential theology" looks like in its varying forms.
Download or read book Nikos written by Howard Dossor and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this post-Christian era Nikos Kazantzakis has enunciated a humanistic philosophy that relates the individual to the wider universe in which we live. He also offers a programme for personal development that accords with an understanding of Life as a perpetual grasping of the new. In these essays, Howard Dossor challenges theological interpretations of Kazantzakis and highlights the existential dimensions of his vision. Reflected here is Kazantzakis' sense of reverence for Life, his commitment to a collaboration with its turbulent struggle to ascend and a passionate plea for others to join him in such an engagement.

Book Synopsis Dialogic Openness in Nikos Kazantzakis by : Charitini Christodoulou
Download or read book Dialogic Openness in Nikos Kazantzakis written by Charitini Christodoulou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Charitini Christodoulou argues that a certain perception of openness that she calls “dialogic” permeates Nikos Kazantzakis’ The Last Temptation. Partly based on Umberto Eco’s theory in Opera Aperta and Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of dialogism, the term “dialogic openness” refers to the idea of antithetical forces clashing and thus revealing different forms of tension that are not resolved at the end of the novel. Thus, it is shown that subjectivity and meaning is always in the process of becoming. The different aspects of identity formation unfold before the eyes of the reader, who becomes a witness to the leading characters’ process of becoming. Christodoulou demonstrates that there are dialogic elements in tension, which can only be brought forth not as a synthesis, such as the stylistics of a genre implies, but as openness perceived as a process of identity formation.

Book Synopsis Kierkegaard's Existentialism by : George Leone
Download or read book Kierkegaard's Existentialism written by George Leone and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Kierkegaard’s complex legacy has been claimed by two often strikingly disjunctive traditions: the Christian and the existential. Leone, however, argues that a sensitive reading of the Danish philosopher reveals that the two strains are inseparable, producing an inclusive view of the self that is aware of its worldly manifestations as well as its spiritual relation to the absolute...Along the way, Leone astutely tackles some of the central topics in Kierkegaard’s esoteric body of work, including his unconventional view of God, his radical interpretation of faith, and his groundbreaking view of ethics, which turn out to be demanding but unencumbered by normative standards. What emerges from this analysis is a lively portrait of a philosopher who understood better than any philosopher before him the basic paradox of the self. Leone’s prose is refreshingly lucid...Still, the scholarly aims require a close read...A welcome, rigorous contribution to Kierkegaard-ian scholarship.” From a Kirkus Review

Book Synopsis The End of Philosophy of Religion by : Nick Trakakis
Download or read book The End of Philosophy of Religion written by Nick Trakakis and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The End of Philosophy of Religion explores the hitherto unchartered waters of the 'meta-philosophy of religion', that is, the methods and assumptions underlying the divergent ways of writing and studying the philosophy of religion that have emerged over the last century. It is also a first-class study of the weaknesses of the analytic approach in philosophy, particularly when it is applied to religious and aesthetic experience. Nick Trakakis' main line of argument is twofold. Firstly, the Anglo-American analytic tradition of philosophy, by virtue of its attachment to scientific norms of rationality and truth, inevitably struggles to come to terms with the mysterious and transcendent reality that is disclosed in religious practice. Secondly, and more positively, alternatives to analytic philosophy of religion are available, not only within the various schools of so-called Continental philosophy, but also in explicitly narrative and literary approaches.
