Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puritan works by Jeremiah Burroughs are always chock-full of sound doctrine, exemplifying God’s grace and the truth of the Gospel. This book is no exception. It is a work that in his day, and ours, has profound applications. As Christians we must fear God instead of men, and we ought to live a life of holy courage daily. Burroughs takes us on a journey through the doctrines that he lifts from Hebrews 11:27 in dealing with Moses forsaking Egypt. He teaches us that wicked men (especially when they have power) are very fierce and outrageous in their wrath when anything crosses them. And then secondly, true faith will keep a gracious heart from immoderate fear of men in the world, regardless of how great they are, or how much power they think they have. God is on the side of His people, and He will be with them. It is a masterful treatise that applies to every Christian in every age. Christians should have godly faith which exemplifies HOLY COURAGE glorifying the LORD JESUS CHRIST in the sight of all men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth of God is the foundation of all true religion. This is why the first commandment in Exodus 20, in order to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, is to have no other gods before him, and to take God as your God, in the way God has revealed himself. God has deposited his truth, his will, his word, into the hands of the church (into the very heart of the church). It has been delivered to them. “…that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints,” (Jude 1:3). Maynard’s exposition of the “truth” comes from Proverbs 23:23, “Buy the truth and sell it not.” He gives two propositions that serve as his doctrines: 1.) An affirmative, or precept, Buy Truth, and, 2.) A negative, or prohibition, Sell it not. In this, Maynard shows 1. What is this Truth which we are required to buy? 2. What does it mean to buy Truth? 3. From whom must it be bought? 4. Why is this purchase necessary? In his second address, he covers Philippians 3:21, “According to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” He will argue for Christ’s kingship, that the work and merit of the Savior is both a current reality in subduing his enemies, and a future reality in its completion. In light of this, he argues that if the Lord has honored you by adopting you into his family, it behooves you to render your absolute service to the King of heaven. Not only that you would see the delights surrounding the cross of Christ, but also the wonders surrounding the crown of the King. Not only that you would love the sweet Savior, but also that you would heed his commands and his truth as the commanding King.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very timely and advantageous work is truly a godly help to Christ’s church, a present help in a time of plague. It is filled with godly directions from various authors who took time to thoughtfully set down specific biblical directions, pleading with the people of God to forsake sin, and follow Christ’s prescription for holiness and righteousness. These authors are all of one mind, though they lived at different times over a span of almost 200 years. This is because all godly directions taken from careful Scriptural study will always end up in the same place. It is true, each writer deals with various texts, from various angles. But, still, their conclusions are the same, and they all offer the church today godly directions that will deliver the church from under the heavy hand of God’s judgments. The authors are well known to those who have taken an interest in the preachers of old, and in times of reformation. The works included have been chosen to be helpful, not overbearing. They are, however, clear in their content, though more examples could certainly be added (having whole books written on this subject of the plague). There are four sermons, one by John Hooper (on Mark 1:15) which is a shortened homily, a sermon by Lancelot Andrewes (on Psa. 106:29–30), one by John Owen (on 2 Timothy 3:1) and one by Thomas Manton (on Psalm 119:67). There is an extended prayer given by William Crashaw (which is amazing and experimentally helpful) coupled by an exhortation given by him about the plague, as well as an extended exhortation by Henry Burton on self-denial and humiliation (on Luke 9:23). Finally, Thomas Draxe sets down a series of simple questions and answers to the difficulty of a plague and how the godly should conduct themselves. In all of these the church around the world would do well to heed their godly directions in this time, that God would hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and remember his covenant for their good.

Book excerpt: The fear of God is a primary spiritual grace deposited in the redeemed and pardoned soul. Scripture is filled with directives in obedience before God based on godly fear because it is a principal grace; it is part of the beginning of grace. Why are not more Christian books taken up with the fear of the Lord? It is because at the outset, such seems to be very offensive to modern Christian sensibilities. And yet, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,” (Prov. 9:10). Many Christians look to Christ like they look to a boyfriend or girlfriend, rather than as the holy God who deals with sin through infinite wrath on the cross. Christ directed his disciples to a holy fear of God (Matt. 10:28). Jesus is the loving Savior, but this is bound up in the astonishment and amazement and respect of God’s being and character in relation to sin and salvation. He is to be feared. What is godly fear? Jeremiah Burroughs will answer this more than adequately. He uses his primary text in Isaiah 66:2, “But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” Knowledge of the word of God produces and cultivates the fear of God in Spirit-endowed believers. It produces a trembling and contrite Christian. As a result, he will show that Scripture informs the pardoned soul to understand God in the light of holy fear and trembling, in turn that becoming a tender heart to follow the word and will of God, as he demonstrates further from 2 Kings 22:14, “Because thine heart was tender….” Holy dread and tenderness of heart are inseparably linked together as Gospel-Fear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more exciting prophecies concerning the Messiah is Isaiah 9:6, and it is very full and very pregnant in its meaning. Here we read the well-known nativity verse concerning the advent of the Messiah as a child born, (his blessed incarnation), and then the varied designations given to that child in his titles. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” There are seven designations in this verse, (including being, 1) born a child and 2) being a son), all of which could be turned in books themselves (and have been). To choose one title to speak on is very difficult. Jeremiah Burroughs, in this work, has chosen the term, “wonderful,” the third in the list, to consider. This work by Burroughs will help the Christian discern some of the sparks of Christ’s wonder in his various offices and works. Jesus is truly wonderful. From Isaiah 9:6 he will cover that Christ is the great wonder of the world. That Christ is wonderful in his offices of Prophet, Priest and King. That Christ is wonderful in his miracles. That Christ is wonderful in his death, resurrection, ascension and present intercession. That Christ is wonderful in the glory of the Father (in two parts) and then concludes with an application. This work is a great encouragement to have our eyes set on the wonders of Christ, and to contemplate daily the person and work of Christ, as God has given us his word to discern him and see him as wonderful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646), was a brilliant Reformed preacher of the Gospel, and an astute theologian. He ministered with pastoral sensitivity and a zealous desire to glorify God in his preaching and writing. This amazing study by Jeremiah Burroughs is set on Isaiah 47:4, “THE LORD OF HOSTS is his Name.” It was initially preached as a result of the impending civil war in England, but has much to teach Christians concerning God as a God of war, and the church as the church militant. His purpose is to point Christians to this, “name of God,” and to sanctify this name in our hearts, in such times of reformation when there is much opposition to reforming the church and living a godly life. He shows that God is a God of War, that he orders war in his providence, that he will use it for his glory and that it will show forth his name as glorious. In a spiritual manner, and a practical one, Burroughs also demonstrates that God raises up all his children to be soldiers under Christ’s military discipline. Such warriors under Christ look to be humble and contrite in spirit, will not be a slave to the devil, or any of his own lusts or the lusts of other men. Such a resoluteness of spirit manifests itself in dangerous times, in a readiness to join with the brethren of the church in difficult services, in which there is much trouble while they live in this world. They have a spirit which is befitting this great Captain, and aims at pleasing God in all their works. One might think, initially, “Why study the God of war?” Since God is the LORD OF HOSTS, which is no small theme throughout the Bible, and is the very substance of triumph and victory in the covenant of God, through Christ, in the power of the Spirit, then such thoughts should raise our minds to give glory to the LORD OF HOSTS, the God of war, as the majestic warrior King. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bible is filled with a theology of walking. This supernatural, and eminently important topic, is the substance of this discourse by master-exegete and preacher Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646). This work is laid out in a series of “rules” which demonstrate to the Christian what one looks like who in fact walks with God. Burroughs’ main text is, “And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” (Gen. 5:24). His main doctrine from this text is that it is the great excellency and commendation of a godly man to walk with God. Or, that it is the highest testimony that can be given that a man walks with God. He covers how a person is brought to walk with God shown in six particulars. Then he defines, specifically, what it means to walk with God, and their extended excellencies, along with exhortations to both Christians and unbelievers as to their interest in walking with God. Then, he provides ten ways that show people in the church, and even people in the world, that a man is walking with God, or not. Lastly, he demonstrates biblical “rules” toward walking with God in the right manner. The last chapter is actually an extra-added section that Burroughs decided he could not write this work without. That chapter is worth its weight in gold, and alone is worth the time of reading this volume. It houses the objection concerning the manner in which God sometimes may hide his face from his people for their good; though, at the time, it surely doesn’t feel as though desertion is a good thing. Burroughs covers being self-deceived in this, and answers various particulars concerning how to rightly judge whether one is actually walking with God in the right way, whether one is deserted by God, and whether such a desertion warrants repentance or just right thinking. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
