Book excerpt: We present the results of an X-ray spectral analysis of 153 galaxy clusters observed with the Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku space telescopes. These clusters, which span 0 z 1.5, were drawn from a larger, mass-selected sample of galaxy clusters discovered in the 2500 square degree South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. With a total combined exposure time of 9.1 Ms, these data yield the strongest constraints to date on the evolution of the metal content of the intracluster medium (ICM). We find no evidence for strong evolution in the global (rR500) ICM metallicity (dZ/dz = -0.06 +/- 0.04 Zsun), with a mean value at z=0.6 of Z = 0.23 +/- 0.01 Zsun and a scatter of 0.08 +/- 0.01 Zsun. These results imply that60% of the metals in the ICM were already in place at z=1 (at 95% confidence), consistent with the picture of an early (z1) enrichment. We find, in agreement with previous works, a significantly higher mean value for the metallicity in the centers of cool core clusters versus non-cool core clusters. We find weak evidence for evolution in the central metallicity of cool core clusters (dZ/dz = -0.21 +/- 0.11 Zsun), which is sufficient to account for this enhanced central metallicity over the past ~10 Gyr. We find no evidence for metallicity evolution outside of the core (dZ/dz = -0.03 +/- 0.06 Zsun), and no significant difference in the core-excised metallicity between cool core and non-cool core clusters. This suggests that strong radio-mode AGN feedback does not significantly alter the distribution of metals at r0.15R500. Given the limitations of current-generation X-ray telescopes in constraining the ICM metallicity at z>1, significant improvements on this work will likely require next-generation X-ray missions.

The gas they contain, the intra-cluster medium (ICM), is heated to temperatures in the approximate range of 1 to 10 keV, and thus emits X-ray radiation. Studying the ICM through the spatial and spectral analysis of its emission returns the richest information about both the overall cosmological context which governs the formation of clusters, as well as the physical processes occurring within. The aim of this thesis is to learn about the history of the physical processes that drive the evolution of galaxy clusters, through careful, spatially resolved measurements of their metallicity and entropy content. A sample of 45 nearby clusters observed with Chandra is analyzed to produce radial density, temperature, entropy and metallicity profiles. The entropy profiles are computed to larger radial extents than in previous Chandra analyses. The results of this analysis are made available to the scientific community in an electronic database. Comparing metallicity and entropy in the outskirts of clusters, we find no signature on the entropy profiles of the ensemble of supernovae that produced the observed metals. In the centers of clusters, we find that the metallicities of high-mass clusters are much less dispersed than those of low-mass clusters. A comparison of metallicity with the regularity of the X-ray emission morphology suggests that metallicities in low-mass clusters are more susceptible to increase from violent events such as mergers. We also find that the variation in the stellar-to-gas mass ratio as a function of cluster mass can explain the variation of central metallicity with cluster mass, only if we assume that there is a constant level of metallicity for clusters of all masses, above which the observed galaxies add more metals in proportion to their mass.

Book excerpt: We present a catalog of galaxy clusters selected via their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect signature from 2500 deg(2) of South Pole Telescope (SPT) data. This work represents the complete sample of clusters detected at high significance in the 2500 deg(2) SPT-SZ survey, which was completed in 2011. A total of 677 (409) cluster candidates are identified above a signal-to-noise threshold of [xi] = 4.5 (5.0). Ground- and space-based optical and near-infrared (NIR) imaging confirms overdensities of similarly colored galaxies in the direction of 516 (or 76%) of the [xi]> 4.5 candidates and 387 (or 95%) of the [xi]> 5 candidates, the measured purity is consistent with expectations from simulations. Of these confirmed clusters, 415 were first identified in SPT data, including 251 new discoveries reported in this work. We estimate photometric redshifts for all candidates with identified optical and/or NIR counterparts, we additionally report redshifts derived from spectroscopic observations for 141 of these systems. The mass threshold of the catalog is roughly independent of redshift above z ~ 0.25 leading to a sample of massive clusters that extends to high redshift. The median mass of the sample is M (500c)([rho](crit)) $\sim 3.5\times 10^{14}\, M_\odot \, h_{70}^{-1}$, the median redshift is z (med) = 0.55, and the highest-redshift systems are at z> 1.4. The combination of large redshift extent, clean selection, and high typical mass makes this cluster sample of particular interest for cosmological analyses and studies of cluster formation and evolution.

Book excerpt: We report results from an x-ray spectral study of the z=0.23 Abell 2111 galaxy cluster using the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology and the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter. By correcting for the energy-dependent point-spread function of the instruments, we have examined the temperature structure of the cluster. The cluster's core within 3 is found to have a temperature of 5.4 +/- 0.5 keV, significantly higher than 2.8 +/-0.7 keV in the surrounding region of r = 3-6. This radially decreasing temperature structure can be parameterized by a polytropic index of gamma less than 1.4. Furthermore, the intracluster medium appears clumpy on scales less than 1. Early studies have revealed that the x-ray centroid of the cluster shifts with spatial scale and the overall optical and x-ray morphology is strongly elongated. These results together suggest that A2111 in undergoing a merger, which is likely responsible for the high fraction of blue galaxies observed in the cluster. We have further measured the abundance of the medium as 0.25 +/- 0.14 solar. This value is similar to those of nearby clusters which do not show a large blue galaxy function, suggesting that star formation in disk galaxies and subsequent loss to the intracluster medium do not drastically alter the average abundance of a cluster since z=0.23. Book excerpt: "The evolution of large-scale structure is traced by galaxy clusters, which are groups of galaxies gravitationally bound by a shared envelope of dark matter on scales of 1-10 Mpc. They are filled with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) consisting of a diffuse hot plasma with characteristic temperature $107K. While ICM models match reasonably well with observations, smaller-scale astrophysical processes in clusters can complicate interpretations of derived thermodynamic properties. These can include cluster-cluster mergers, feedback from active black holes, and accretion, among several others. The complex relationship between these processes and the properties of the ICM must be understood to use clusters as a proxy for structure formation over cosmic history. My work uses two different instruments to constrain large-scale structure evolution and cluster astrophysics through observations of the diffuse ICM. The first is Herschel-SPIRE, which I used to measure cluster temperatures with the relativistic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The second is the Tomographic Ionized-carbon Mapping Experiment, which will perform observations of cluster peculiar velocities using the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. These measurements will provide insight into the connection between clusters and the cosmic web of structure that influences their growth. This thesis will describe the creation and testing of an analysis pipeline to derive cluster ICM temperatures using archival SPIRE data, as well as the hardware and software development I performed for the TIME project, and my contributions during our two instrument deployments."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The gas-phase metallicity of the interstellar medium is a powerful probe of the cycle of baryons into and out of galaxies. Constraining the scaling of metallicity with global galaxy properties such as stellar mass (M_*) and star-formation rate (SFR) at multiple epochs provides insight into galaxy growth across cosmic history and the origin of the present-day galaxy population. In this dissertation, I investigate the evolution of the physical conditions of ionized gas in star-forming regions, including metallicity, over the past 12 billion years of cosmic history. This work is contained in five studies that collectively improve our knowledge of galaxy metallicities over the redshift range z=0-3. I present measurements of the mass-metallicity relation at z~2.3 using a novel high-redshift data set from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. I further show that there is a relation among M_*, SFR, and metallicity for z~2.3 star-forming galaxies, unambiguously demonstrating the existence of this relation at z>1 for the first time. Knowledge of the physical conditions of line-emitting gas, including the electron density and ionization state, is required for robust estimates of metallicity from strong optical emission lines. I show that the electron density of star-forming regions increases by an order of magnitude from z~0 to z~2.3, and place constraints on the evolution of ionization state. Obtaining unbiased galaxy metallicity estimates additionally requires proper treatment of the various line-emitting sources falling within spectroscopic apertures. I characterize systematic metallicity biases from z~0 global galaxy spectra using a model framework that treats galaxies as ensembles of HII and diffuse ionized gas regions of varying metallicities. The resulting corrections increase the accuracy of the z~0 baseline for evolutionary studies. Finally, I present the first temperature-based metallicity determination at z>2 from a detection of the auroral emission line [OIII]4363. Measurements of auroral lines provide an independent estimate of metallicity that can be used to construct metallicity calibrations appropriate at high redshifts. Observational facilities coming online in the near-future will enable temperature-based metallicity measurements for large samples of high-redshift galaxies, providing unprecedented accuracy in metallicity measurements and a more complete understanding of gas flows and galaxy growth.

Book excerpt: We present deep Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the galaxy cluster RDCS1252.9-2927, which was selected from the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) and confirmed by extensive spectroscopy with the VLT at redshift z = 1.237. With the Chandra data, the X-ray emission from the intra-cluster medium is well resolved and traced out to 500 kpc, thus allowing a measurement of the physical properties of the gas with unprecedented accuracy at this redshift. We detect a clear 6.7 keV Iron K line in the Chandra spectrum providing a redshift within 1% of the spectroscopic one. By augmenting our spectroscopic analysis with the XMM-Newton data (MOS detectors only), we significantly narrow down the 1? error bar to 10% for the temperature and 30% for the metallicity, with best fit values kT = 6.0{sup +0.7}{sub -0.5} keV, Z = 0.36{sup +0.12}{sup -0.10}Z{sub {circle_dot}}. In the likely hypothesis of hydrostatic equilibrium, we measure a total mass of M500 = (1.9±0.3)1014h−1--0 M{sub {circle_dot}} within R{sub {Delta}=500} ≈ 536 kpc. Overall, these observations imply that RDCS1252.9-2927 is the most X-ray luminous and likely the most massive bona-fide cluster discovered to date at z> 1. When combined with current samples of distant clusters, these data lend further support to a mild evolution of the cluster scaling relations, as well the metallicity of the intra-cluster gas. Inspection of the cluster mass function in the current cosmological concordance model (h,?{sub m},?{sub {Lambda}}) = (0.7,0.3,0.7) and? = 0.7-0.8 shows that RDCS1252.9-2927 is an M* cluster at z = 1.24, in keeping with number density expectations in the RDCS survey volume.
