The practical problem grows more pressing, more susceptible of hasty and incompetent handling by those who proceed on their first impulses and all the while the student of past development gets further aloof from the issue which he ought to illuminate. By the very fact of his attitude and spirit of specialism he is in no expert attitude to the living problem, which he too often faces in what Professor Mahaffy calls the elderly temper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to voting, taxes, environmental regulations, social services, education, criminal justice, political parties, property rights, gun control, marriage and a whole host of other modern American issues, the state in which a citizen resides makes a difference. That idea—that the political decisions made by those in state-level offices are of tremendous importance to the lives of people whose states they govern—is the fundamental concept explored in this book. Gary F. Moncrief and Peverill Squire introduce students to the very tangible and constantly evolving implications, limitations, and foundations of America’s state political institutions, and accessibly explain the ways that the political powers of the states manifest themselves in the cultures, economies, and lives of everyday Americans, and always will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Evolution of States" by J.M. Robertson is an expanded version of a previously published work called "An Introduction to English Politics." The book aims to bring to light the ruling forces in political life, both ancient and modern, rather than providing a complete history of political institutions. The author acknowledges the increasing focus on understanding historic causation in terms of determining conditions, particularly economic factors. While the book may expound views of history that are not widely accepted, the author believes they are made in the light of a study of the concrete process. The author also questions the utility of explaining modern historic developments in terms of special psychic changes or movements in communities. Instead, the book emphasizes the importance of establishing the constantly recurring economic factors of each period and their impact on intellectual values. Ultimately, the book seeks to influence the reader's psychic processes and highlight the social significance of material circumstances, knowledge, and ignorance. Book Synopsis The Development of the Modern State by : Gianfranco Poggi
Download or read book The Development of the Modern State written by Gianfranco Poggi and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institutional features and the past and future role of the state should be a central concern of contemporary sociological and political theory, but until now they have been sadly neglected. Lately, in particular, the state's increasing involvement in the management of industrial and industrializing societies has made it even more important to understand its past development, its current activities, and the related trends in its structure and in its relation to the larger society. As a contribution to this task, Gianfranco Poggi reviews the main phases in the institutional history of the modern state. Restating a typology elaborated, among others by Max Weber, he outlines first the feudal system of rule, then the late-medieval Ständestaat and the absolutist state. Next the book discusses the nineteenth-century constitutional state, seen as the most accomplished embodiment of the modern, Western state. Finally, it points out the major developments which have occurred since the end of the last century in the relationship between the state and society, and identifies the threat these pose to the persistence of Western political values. Throughout, the discussion draws upon an impressive body of literature on the modern state (much of it not available in English) from the fields of history, law, and the social sciences.
