Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Doddridge DD was an English Nonconformist leader, educator, and hymnwriter. Philip Doddridge worked towards a united Nonconformist body that would have wide appeal, retaining highly cultured elements without alienating those less educated. His best known work, The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul (1745), dedicated to Isaac Watts, was often reprinted and became widely influential. It was through reading it, together with Isaac Milner, that William Wilberforce began the spiritual journey which eventually led to his conversion. It is said that this work best illustrates Doddridge's religious genius, and it has been widely translated. His other well-known works include: The Family Expositor (6 vols., 1739-1756); Life of Colonel Gardiner (1747); and a Course of Lectures on Pneumatology, Ethics and Divinity (1763). Doddridge also published several courses of sermons on particular topics.

Book Synopsis The Historical Evidence for Jesus by : G. A. Wells
Download or read book The Historical Evidence for Jesus written by G. A. Wells and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly researched study, G.A. Wells has squarely faced the question of whether a man named Jesus lived, preached, healed, and died in Palestine during the early years of the first century of the Christian era - or indeed, at any time.Building on the biblical studies of Christian theologians, Dr. Wells soberly demonstrates that we have no reliable eyewitnesses to the events depicted in the New Testament. He publicizes a fact known to theological scholars but little-known in the average Christian congregation: that the order of books of the New Testament is not an accurate chronological arrangement. Indeed, Paul, who never saw Jesus, wrote his epistles to early Christian congregations before the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were written. It may come as a great surprise to Christians and other monotheists, to agnostics, atheists, and humanists alike, that "the earliest references to the historical Jesus are so vague that it is not necessary to hold that he ever existed; the rise of Christianity can, from the undoubtedly historical antecedents, be explained quite well without him; and reasons can be given to show why, from about A.D. 80 or 90, Christians began to suppose that he had lived in Palestine about fifty years earlier."The Historical Evidence for Jesus is not a frontal attack on Christians per se; rather it is an easily understood but scholarly examination of the evidence for many long-accepted notions about the "biography" of the man called Jesus. This book takes up and quotes extensively from the Epistles and the Gospels of the New Testament, thus letting the evidence speak for itself in words familiar to every Bible reader. For example, Wells closely compares what Paul said about Jesus with what the author of Matthew, who lived later, wrote of him. Then he explains why these discrepancies apparently exist. Startling indeed is his proof that "earlier writers sometimes make statements which positively exclude the idea that Jesus worked miracles, delivered certain teachings, or suffered under Pilate."There is also interesting material on the topics of Jesus'' supposed family, the so-called Shroud of Turin, and the myth-making that even today surrounds the figure of Jesus. Dr. Wells does not, however, attempt to demolish belief in God or the ethical precepts held by Christians. His presentation is always fair and couched in moderate tones.

Book Synopsis Evidence for the Truth of Christianity by : Dr Dallas Burdette
Download or read book Evidence for the Truth of Christianity written by Dr Dallas Burdette and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One objective of this book is to set forth the truthfulness of Christianity. I examined the Resurrection of Jesus by employing rigorous logic in order to determine whether the Resurrection is fact or fiction. I cited from the internal evidence of the Scriptures to prove beyond the shadow-of-a-doubt that the Resurrection did happen. An examination of the New Testament documents are written in such a way as to disprove fraud or dishonesty. In addition to these ("first eight chapters"), I wrote another eight chapters as a defense of the legitimacy of Christianity by means of common-sense arguments. Christians are confronted with a great deal of venom, bitterness, acrimony, and malice. I have also written several chapters exposing the lack of sound and comprehensive arguments by atheists against the candor and credibility of the New Testament writings. Dallas Burdette has been a serious student, teacher and preacher of the Bible for sixty-six years, supporting himself for many years as an agent for AFLAC. He has written numerous articles for religious journals, as well as many essays and sermons which are available on his website (www.freedominchrist.net). He has developed a keen interest in promoting unity among God's people through a more accurate reading of the Word. He has degrees (B.A., M.S., and M.Div.) from Amridge University (formerly Southern Christian University) where he also was Director of Extended Learning for five years. He holds the Doctor of Ministry degree (1999) from Erskine Theological Seminary. He has published twelve books.
