Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evening Twilight and the Glorious Dawning The evening brings with it decrepitude and infirm ity. When David said to Barzillai, come and live with me at the palace, Barzillai answered I am this day four-score years old and can I discern be tween good and evil? Can thy servant taste What I eat or What I drink Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women P Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back that I may die in my own city, to be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. The desire to die at home, and be interred in the family vault, is generally all of earthly preference that now remains. The pleasures of Sxpectation have ceased; there is nothing to hope for. The clouds return after the rain. The keepers of the house tremble. The strong men bow themselves. The active limbs are feeble. That other disciple, who outran Peter, can no longer creep from his couch any one can bind him, and carry him whither he would not. The grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be dark ened The eyes are dim. The landscape is blurred. The World Is misty; the doors are Shut in the streets. The avenues of audience and utterance are closed. Soft sounds can no longer be enjoyed. Whispers of affection are not heard. There is terror in that which is high, and fears are in the way. The mountain side is formidable. The grasshopper is a burden, and desire fails. The frail nature we inherit is eucom passed with a cloud of infirmities, iwhich develop themselves the more painfully, as the sands of life are running out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Twilight and the Dawn Having consented to the venture of its publication, under the auspices Of the Blackburn and District Authors' Society, the author himself Claims no special merit for the contents of the volume beyond saying that his desire has been to appeal more to the hearts Of the general public than to the heads of scholars and critics, who, were they in ignorance of the fact that he had spent the greater part of his life in the Close atmosphere of a cotton factory, and thus been debarred from the facilities for study which are the lot of people more favourably Circumstanced, might extend to him little mercy on account of his lack of culture. Download or read book Red Doc> written by Anne Carson and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary event: a follow-up to the internationally acclaimed poetry bestseller Autobiography of Red ("Amazing" -- Alice Munro) that takes its mythic boy-hero into the twenty-first century to tell a story all its own of love, loss, and the power of memory. In a stunningly original mix of poetry, drama, and narrative, Anne Carson brings the red-winged Geryon from Autobiography of Red, now called "G," into manhood, and through the complex labyrinths of the modern age. We join him as he travels with his friend and lover "Sad" (short for Sad But Great), a haunted war veteran; and with Ida, an artist, across a geography that ranges from plains of glacial ice to idyllic green pastures; from a psychiatric clinic to the somber housewhere G's mother must face her death. Haunted by Proust, juxtaposing the hunger for flight with the longing for family and home, this deeply powerful verse picaresque invites readers on an extraordinary journey of intellect, imagination, and soul.

Book Synopsis Purkinje's Vision by : Nicholas J. Wade
Download or read book Purkinje's Vision written by Nicholas J. Wade and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869) has fascinated students from many disciplines. Histologists marvel at his early descriptions of cells; physiologists admire his attempts to relate structure to function; pharmacologists view in awe his heroic experiments on self-administered drugs; forensic scientists acknowledge his role in the use of fingerprints for identification; and Czech patriots salute his awakening of pride in their nation. Yet all these achievements followed his initial enquiries into vision. It is this psychological dimension that fostered this collaboration. As the title suggests, the present volume is bifocal. In the narrow sense it refers to Purkinje's studies of vision, but in its broader view it concerns Purkinje's anticipation of neuroscience. Purkinje provided evidence to support both its cellular and its conceptual base. At the cellular level his acute vision is immortalized within our bodies. At the conceptual level, he sought to relate subjective phenomena to their objective underpinnings--to link psychology to physiology. Vision provides a bond that unites psychology and physiology, and it is this bond that was strengthened by Purkinje's enquiries. The authors have tried to provide a context in which Purkinje's descriptions of visual phenomena can be placed. In some cases this exposes clear precursors of research for which Purkinje has been credited. In others, there was nothing to suggest the phenomena that he exposed. The book translates Purkinje's initial masterpiece on subjective vision and places it in the context of emerging views of neuroscience.
